Chapter 856: Queen Nalai
The guards no longer acted like they’d seen a demon; they fell into disciplined formation, carving a smooth path through the city streets.

The roads weren’t roads at all, but gentle walkways carved into layered terraces, flowing with soft-edged crystal tiles and guided streams of water beneath transparent surfaces. Lights danced in the water like fireflies, illuminating the paths from below with a soft, dreamlike glow.

Children giggled as they ran along narrow bridges, skipping over koi fish that jumped from canal to canal like playful spirits. Grandmothers sat in lotus-shaped porches surrounded by weaving plants that responded to their songs, trimming vines and watering herbs without lifting a finger. Some buildings floated slightly above the ground, resting on rippling platforms of water manipulated by constant, low-grade cultivation arrays.

A giant jellyfish-shaped lantern hovered high above a plaza, its tendrils swaying with colored light that painted the nearby buildings in hues of blue.

A waterwheel turned slowly beside a temple grown from the skeleton of a massive shell, each rotation ringing with harmonious chimes that vibrated the air like a heartbeat.

It was serene.

It was beautiful.

It was clear to Quinlan that the citizens were happy. This queen of theirs truly made a wonderful paradise through her efforts, he thought.

Even Serika didn’t speak, just observed her neighboring country’s sights.

Soon, they arrived at a bridge of rippling glass that led into the Silver Depths Court, the Queen’s famed palace.

It shimmered like a building in one’s dream—a structure made of flowing blue crystal tiles, carved coral, and mist. Slender pillars rose like reeds from the still water below, and the entire palace looked as though it had been grown from the lake rather than built upon it. Water fell in slow streams from delicate fountains above, forming veils between open-air chambers where music played and lotus incense drifted.

The entrance alone boasted a grand staircase flanked by statues of past Water Sovereigns, each with their arms outstretched, guiding the way into the heart of the nation.

Guards stood at the ready, cloaked in robes of purest blue, their armor inlaid with decorative pearls. But they did not challenge the group as they approached. Word had already reached them.

The Fire Sovereign had come.

And she had brought guests.

Suddenly, the palace doors parted with a deep, echoing hum, as if the structure itself breathed with water qi.

From the mist-laced archway emerged a woman of striking beauty and undeniable royal presence. Her hair flowed like moonlight over a lake, cascading in silver-blue waves down her back. A crown of woven aquaglass sat elegantly atop her head, gleaming softly with embedded sapphires. Her eyes—icy cerulean with hints of starlight—radiated serenity, wisdom, and the quiet strength of still waters that ran deep.

She wore a gown of flowing azure silk, edged with gold and starlit patterns that shone with every movement. A single, flawless sapphire hung at her collar, catching the light like a tear suspended in time. She was regal, composed, and breathtaking. That being said, she wasn’t a cold, dismissive beauty but a calm and regal queen, like the surface of a tranquil lake.

She smiled gently, her voice smooth and graceful as she welcomed them.

“Welcome to the Silver Depths Court. May the waters that cradle our nation soothe your hearts and still your storms, my esteemed guests.”

For a breath, it was perfect.

Then Serika vanished from Quinlan’s side in a burst of hissing steam.

There was a sharp *whoosh!* sound, and suddenly she was beside the Queen with her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. With a grin like a wolf that had found its favorite chew toy, Serika lifted the stunned ruler clean off the ground, spinning her around in a tight, joyful arc.

“SERIKA VAEL!” Queen Nalai yelped, crying the Fire Sovereign’s name like a disbelieving mother. Her calm, queenly grace shattered in a single moment’s time. “Put me down this instant! We agreed to keep this relationship secret!”

“Pfft! Secret? Still?” Serika threw her head back in a laugh as Nalai’s guards exchanged shocked glances, unsure how to react. On one hand, they wanted to protect their queen’s safety no matter what, but they noticed how she didn’t protect herself using her potent water arts. That could only mean she wasn’t thinking her life was in danger. As such, they were reluctant to make a move on the Fire Sovereign, knowing it could lead to war between their nations.

Serika was not at all bothered by the many stunned gazes directed at her. “Sis, the end of the world’s practically knocking on our doors. What’s the point of hiding that we’re twins anymore?” She cradled Nalai closer like a prized plush toy. “Besides, you’re way too cute not to hug.”

Nalai squirmed helplessly in her muscular grasp, cheeks flushed a shade pinker than the evening sky. Her slender arms flailed in quiet protest against Serika’s far sturdier frame.

“S-Stop squeezing! I am the Water Sovereign! Members of my inner circle are watching!”

“Bah! Screw all them sneaky politicians!” Serika smirked, sending a sidelong glance at a fat old aristocrat who stood behind the queen and had a very deep frown on his face. “Furthermore, right now, you’re nothing more than my adorable little sis. I did come out a few seconds sooner, after all.”

“I swear, if I used water on you-!”

“You won’t,” Serika interjected, nose bumping against Nalai’s.

“Put me down right this instant and stop sending dismissive glances at my finance minister!” Nalai snapped, voice losing all regal composure.

The nearby guards, speechless and panicked moments ago, were now busy doing their best impressions of stone statues, some subtly turning away with bright red ears. A few looked like they wanted to melt into the marble floor. This was the first time they saw their peerless queen show such a girly side to anyone.

Quinlan was lost for words.

Feng leaned against him for fear of falling, wide-eyed.

Their gazes met, equally stunned.

In perfect unison, they both muttered:

“…Hah?”
