Re-birth: The Beginning after the End - Chapter 208
Chapter 208: GOLDEN SHADOW
Mo Xing smiled, and for once she could see his vulnerability laid bare, the carefully constructed walls momentarily lowered. His golden eyes caught the dappled light, revealing depths she’d only glimpsed before. “Thank you, my Little Tempest.” He leaned in and gently kissed her forehead.
Li Hua closed her eyes and inhaled his familiar scent of night bloom flowers and pine. Her heart beat faster, and for the first time in both her lives, she could picture someone who could stand beside her through it all. As he pulled back, she squeezed his hand and smiled up at him.
“Thank you, my Golden Shadow,” she whispered, the nickname slipping out naturally.
Mo Xing’s eyes widened slightly before crinkling at the corners with genuine pleasure. His rich laughter filled the space between them as he reached out to ruffle her hair. “Golden Shadow,” he repeated thoughtfully, savoring the words. “No one has ever named me so perfectly.”
Li Hua’s cheeks blazed with color under his appreciative gaze. She ducked her head, embarrassed yet pleased by his reaction. “It just… fits you,” she murmured, turning away to hide her deepening blush.
The moment lingered between them, delicate and new—a fragile bridge built from shared secrets and mutual understanding. Mo Xing’s fingers brushed against hers once more, a gentle touch that promised conversations yet to come, before he settled back against the tree trunk with a contented sigh. With a subtle gesture, he dissolved the privacy barrier, the gossamer energy dispersing into motes of obsidian shadows before fading completely.
They resumed their cultivation in companionable silence, each drawing strength from the clearing’s concentrated spiritual energy while their bodies recovered from the Grove’s demands. The massive heart tree above them continued its ancient vigil, branches occasionally shifting position despite the absence of wind—as if the forest itself were settling more comfortably around these visitors who had passed its first true test.
By late afternoon, the quality of light filtering through the canopy had changed to amber, and still no other disciples had emerged from the Grove. Elder Fu finally opened his eyes, his gaze sweeping the clearing before settling on Li Hua and Mo Xing.
“The first of the others approaches,” he announced, rising smoothly to his feet. “Sun Wei and Liu Fei have completed the grove’s trials.”
As if summoned by his words, the two elite disciples emerged from different paths at almost the same moment. Their expressions revealed the Grove’s impact—faces drawn with the strain of confronting personal truths, eyes carrying a new weight of understanding. They bowed respectfully to Elder Fu before taking positions on other exposed roots of the heart tree.
Sun Wei glanced briefly at Li Hua and Mo Xing, a flicker of surprise crossing his features when he realized they had arrived significantly earlier. “You made quick work of the Grove’s challenges,” he observed, a new note of respect in his typically arrogant tone.
“The Grove shows what it will,” Li Hua replied neutrally. “Some passages are simply more direct than others.”
As darkness began to gather beneath the canopy, more disciples gradually emerged—first Zhao Jun with his characteristic stoic demeanor, then Yang Mei supporting an obviously shaken Mei Lin. The remaining disciples trickled in as night fell completely, each bearing the unmistakable marks of profound confrontation with their own pasts.
Elder Fu watched as the final junior disciples stumbled into the clearing, their young faces streaked with tears they made no attempt to hide. “All have completed the passage,” he announced, his voice carrying easily across the gathering. “Rest tonight. What lies beyond the Grove demands strength of both body and spirit.”
As the disciples dispersed themselves around the heart tree’s massive trunk, looking to establish spaces for the night’s rest, Li Hua found herself wondering what revelations the others had faced—what regrets, what abandoned paths, what forgotten responsibilities had the Grove forced them to acknowledge. Whatever their individual experiences, one thing was clear from their shadowed eyes and subdued conversations: none had emerged unchanged.
Li Hua noticed Mei Lin on the opposite side of the clearing, leaning close to Yang Mei, her slender frame angled in their direction. She was whispering urgently, her delicate features scrunched in what appeared to be disdain as she cast furtive glances toward Li Hua and Mo Xing. When their eyes met across the distance, Mei Lin abruptly turned away, suddenly pretending to be deeply engaged in setting up her pavilion, her movements unnaturally stiff with the awareness of being caught.
Unlike the other disciples who also began to retrieve their pagoda shelters from their storage rings, Li Hua and Mo Xing made no move to establish elaborate accommodations. With a few precise gestures, Mo Xing created a subtle barrier around their chosen root hollow—not a complete enclosure but a gentle field that redirected attention and dampened sound. The formation was woven so skillfully that it remained nearly invisible, marked only by occasional glimmers when moonlight struck its boundaries at specific angles.
Li Hua produced a carved jade gourd from her space, already filled with cold spirit water. She offered it first to Mo Xing, who accepted with an appreciative nod.
He tilted his head back and took several deep gulps, his throat working steadily as he drained nearly half the container. When he finally lowered the gourd, a satisfied sigh escaped his lips.
“Thank you,” Mo Xing murmured, his voice carrying sincerity as he returned the jade gourd.
Li Hua nodded as she replenished the vessel. She raised the gourd to her own lips, but quickly became aware of Mo Xing’s gaze on her—his golden eyes darkening with an intensity that made the simple act of drinking seem somehow intimate. The way he watched her suggested he found significance in their sharing of the vessel.
After getting her fill, she lowered the gourd, a single drop remained on her lower lip. Before she could reach for it, Mo Xing leaned forward with unexpected swiftness, his lips wrapping around her bottom lip and captured the lingering droplet. The moment was brief—barely more than a heartbeat—yet time seemed to stretch between them as their essence resonated in unexpected harmony.
When he pulled back, his golden eyes had darkened to amber, pupils dilated as he studied her reaction with an intensity that made her breath catch. Li Hua couldn’t help the blush that swept across her cheeks and burned at the tips of her ears, her eyes unable to hold his gaze.
“Goldy…” she whispered, the nickname carrying a new weight in the fragile space between them.
“Hmm?” Mo Xing’s voice was a low rumble, his smile deepening as he watched her flustered reaction with undisguised satisfaction.
Li Hua found herself at a rare loss for words, her typical quick wit deserting her completely. The warmth of his touch lingered on her skin, surprising yet not unwelcome. She should have learned by now that predictability was never part of Mo Xing’s nature—the man seemed to exist solely to upend her expectations at every turn.
Needing a moment to collect herself, she shifted slightly, turning away from his perceptive gaze. The simple movement gave her just enough privacy to press a cool palm against her flushed cheek, willing her racing heart to settle into a more dignified rhythm.
As the temporary encampment settled into nighttime rhythms, Li Hua felt Mo Xing shift beside her, his posture straightening as he returned to meditative cultivation—his back supported by the living wood of the ancient tree. She let out a quiet breath, steadying herself before turning to mirror his position, slipping into her own cultivation cycle. Their breathing gradually synchronized with both each other and the slow, powerful respiration of the forest itself.
Though her body settled easily into the familiar rhythm, Li Hua’s thoughts drifted to the gentle press of his lips against hers. A secret smile curved her mouth as warmth bloomed in her chest like a midnight flower unfurling beneath moonlight.
Twice now they had shared such moments. In both her lives, she had never experienced this particular sweetness, this quiet certainty that settled in her heart like embers finding home. Whatever dangers awaited beyond the Grove, she found herself treasuring these delicate moments with her Golden Shadow, hoping they marked the beginning of something she hadn’t dared imagine for herself.
