Chapter 428: Bolu, The Kind Hyena Man 2
For years, it was the same thing.
And he was just about to give up. But that was when it happened…
The War with the New Beast kingdom. It was war no one was expecting, and as a result, many were drafted into the army.
Naturally, all young able bodied men were drafted into the military for this. The only women that were left out were those that were considered to be of low fighting power from Beast tribes that were very weak.
However, the branch of the military that Bolu, the hyena man was drafted into was the land army. His plan was to use the opportunity during the war to carve a name for himself and then climb the ranks until he was able to officially join the navy.
And that was when he met her. She was of the hyena people like himself. Her name was Penelope.
It was love at first sight, and this was the same thing for her. Unfortunately, such relationships were not permitted in the military, but what were they to do when only after two months of their meeting at the war front, she was with child.
Bolu, by his cunny managed to fake her death in the war front and sneak her back, but because what he had done was very illegal, the only place he could bring her to, was to the orphanage.
She stayed in the Orphanage, and there, in secret, she gave birth to the first child.
It was a girl. She was beautiful like her mother, and she grew up very fast.
Bolu had been so elated that he had sneaked his way back home to see his first child, and the look on his face as he entered fatherhood was a priceless one.
Momo had looked from a corner as Bolu looked into the big beady but very innocent eyes of the new born and made the biggest promise he had ever made to anyone. “I never had a father, and had no one to watch out for me. I promise, I will be your World, your hero, just as you are mine.”
Back then, Momo looking at him, had asked, “and what if you can’t be? What if you are not there?”
Bolu had responded with a smile, “the war is almost over. The Senate are negotiating a peace treaty with the New beast kingdom. Once that happens, I will be able to come and live here…” Bolu looked at his daughter once more, “…with you.”
“I have heard that war does a lot to a person. What if you fall down the wrong path?” this time around, the question had come from Penelope who was lying on the bed, her worried gaze on her man and her child.
Bolu walked over to her, and sat beside her. With a hand, he stroked her cheek, pushing the strangs of her hair that fell to the side, behind her ear. “I won’t. And if such a day comes, if I become a monster to you, my child or to those I call my own. either of you can do.”
Bolu looked at Penelope and Momo, “either of you can take my life.”
Penelope was shocked by his words, and so was Momo. Nevertheless, they could both see the seriousness in his eyes. “Promise me!” he added.
Both women looked at one another. They were the most important women in his life, and he had handed them the responsibility of his life. Both of them nodded and swore to him that they would ensure he remained on the right path.
Time went back, and the war that looked like it was about to end suddenly took an unknown turn. In became worse and many lost their lives. News from the war front was never pleasant to anyone’s ears, and this was most especially true to a lover back home.
However, Bolu always found a way. He remained true to his word. And all the way to the war front, he was a father, a man like no other.
Once in a while, Bolu would send letters back home, sometimes many of them containing stories that he wanted penelope to read to his daughter. And at the end of every letter. He would say, “Daddy loves you, and mummy. Never forget that, okay?”
Even though he was so far away, it felt like he was near, every time.
And then he would also send money and of course whatever he could from the war front. All to support the Orphanage and his family. And for a while, his salary alone sustained the entire place.
The kids of the Orphanage no longer ate black bread, but fresh baked bread and tomato soup. for them, it was food meant for kings.
Even though the war intensity, was high, Bolu would still try to sneak back home now and then. Of course, during such times, Penelope would beg him to stay and not go back. After all, they were those that had escaped from war like that. No one wanted to die.
However, something unforeseen happened.
Some one unknown had taken information about Penelope being a soldier who had ran away to one of the military outposts close to the border.
And then they was a raid on the Orphanage for her. That raid had a lot of accidents. One of them being that Penelope’s daughter was kidnapped by the men that came for her, and Penelope, now with child once more, was close to both labor and death.
Fortunately, Bolu had done another sneak out from the military camps. But when he came, his home was destroyed. That raid that time was the reason why the Orphanage was the way it was till this very day.

Penelope died in Bolu’s arms, after prematurely giving birth to their son.
Bolu had remained at her death bed with her hand in his. He held her tight as tears fell like rain from his eyes. The pain of losing a loved one was like a thousand daggers to his heart, bleeding the kindness that he had, bleeding the good man that he was.
Naturally, he took up his blade for revenge…
