After finishing her meal, Layla delicately picked up the napkin and dabbed at her lips before placing it neatly beside her plate.
She looked up, her gaze met Alekis’s.
“Thank you, Father, for taking the time to meet with me,” she said, her tone respectful but firm.
Alekis leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest.
His piercing eyes studied her for a moment before he spoke.
“What’s on your mind, Layla?” She hesitated briefly, gathering her thoughts.
“It’s about Lucius,” she began, her voice soft but earnest.
“I want to understand more about the accident-how it happened and why.
Lucius still carries the weight of his brother’s death, blaming himself for what happened that day.
It’s eating away at him, and I’m worried about how much longer he can bear it.” The waiter returned, swiftly clearing the table of their empty dishes, but neither of them paid him any mind.
Alekis’s expression darkened slightly as he considered her words, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the armrest of his chair.
Once the waiter left, Alekis leaned forward, his voice low and measured.
“Lucius had asked Antoine to go fishing that day, not knowing it conflicted with an important board meeting.
Antoine, despite the significance of the meeting, chose to keep it from Lucius and decided to join him.
During their trip, they met with an accident, and Antoine lost his life.
Because Lucius had unknowingly drawn him away on such a crucial day, the blame fell squarely on him.” Alekis’s words hung heavily in the air.
His expression was stern, but there was a trace of weariness in his eyes as he fell silent.
Layla processed the information before speaking, her tone thoughtful.
“So, the media accused Lucius of orchestrating the accident, believing he wanted control of the company for himself,” she said, her voice tinged with both frustration and understanding.
Alekis gave a slow nod.
“That’s exactly what they believed,” he said, his voice grim.
“And it didn’t help that Lucius had ties to Matteo, his…
unsavory associate from the mafia.
Those connections painted him in an even darker light.
People were quick to condemn him.” Layla frowned, her heart sinking at the weight of Lucius’s burden.
Alekis’s gaze grew distant as he continued, “I tried to reach out, to reason with him, but he shut us all out.
He carried that guilt alone, letting it harden into a barrier between him and the rest of us.” Alekis paused, his mind drifting back.
“I still remember the day he came home after being discharged from the hospital.
There was a coldness in his eyes-a distance that wasn’t there before.

It was as if the Lucius we knew had vanished, leaving only the shell of a man haunted by that accident.” **Flashback started** Alekis was about to leave for the hospital when he stepped into the living room, his coat draped over his arm.
He paused mid-stride, his eyes narrowing as they fell on his grandson, Roderick, sitting stiffly on the couch.
“Why aren’t you at school?” Alekis asked.
Roderick’s sharp reply came without hesitation as he left the couch.
“I heard Uncle is returning today.” Alekis’s expression darkened.
“He is.
But mind your tone.” Roderick clenched his fists, his jaw tight with suppressed anger.
“I don’t want him here.
Because of him, I lost my father.” “Roderick!” Alekis’s voice rose, echoing through the room.
Before he could say more, Fiona entered, her brows furrowed in concern.
“Why are you shouting at him, Father?” she asked, glancing between them.
Alekis gestured sharply toward Roderick.
“Your son has lost his sense.” Roderick stood, his fists trembling at his sides.
“Grandpa, everyone says Uncle Lucius planned this-to take the company from my father.
He’s involved with mafias and gangsters.
Why didn’t you push for a thorough investigation?
Did my father mean so little to you?
Why do you protect Uncle Lucius?” Fiona stepped closer, placing a calming hand on her son’s shoulder.
“Roderick, you’re wrong about Lucius.
He was in the accident too.
He nearly lost his life.
Father, please forgive him,” she added, turning to Alekis.
But Roderick pulled away, his eyes blazing with disappointment.
“Mom, how can you defend the man who took Dad’s life?
I don’t understand.” Before anyone could respond, the faint click of heels echoed from the hallway.
All three turned toward the doorway, where Lucius appeared, a bottle of alcohol dangling from his hand.
“Lucius,” Alekis whispered, his stern demeanor slipping for a moment as he took a few steps forward.
“You’re still recovering; you shouldn’t be drinking.” Lucius didn’t acknowledge him.
Instead, he strode to the couch, slumping heavily onto it.
Without a word, he lifted the bottle and took a long drink, his expression blank but his eyes shadowed with pain.
The room fell into a stunned silence, the weight of his actions shocking them all.
Roderick broke it, his voice sharp with rage.
“Uncle, answer me.
How did you survive that accident?
Everyone says it was deadly.” His gaze was a burning demand, filled with bitterness and accusation.
Lucius lowered the bottle before looking at him.
“Antoine saved me.
I did expect that I would die.
But here I am.
Alive,” he said with a dark chuckle.
Roderick’s eyes flickered with annoyance.
“You don’t regret it, do you?
Because of you…” His words couldn’t finish as Alekis interrupted him.
However, Lucius spoke, “I invited Antoine and yes, he died because of me.
I should have died in that accident too.
Maybe I’ll die soon.” He stood up from his place and with went ahead to his room.
Alekis’s heart sank to see his son like that while Fiona began crying.
She asked Roderick not to be so harsh on his uncle.
But Roderick being young refused to see all that.
Alekis took out his phone and called Lucius’s mother, Evelina.
But as expected she didn’t answer his call.
**Flashback ended** Layla’s eyes filled with tears, but she quickly wiped those tears from the edges of her eyes before they could even fall.
“Can you heal him, Layla?
Because I failed in that.
I still believe it’s going to be difficult because Lucius refuses to let it go,” Alekis asserted.
“I will free Lucius from this pain, Father.
I promise.
And thank you for sharing that painful experience with me,” Layla whispered in gratitude, apologizing to him for making him remember the past.
