Chapter 18: A mafia leader
“Lucius, don’t joke. We can’t bathe together,” Layla insisted, placing her hand on his chest in an attempt to create some distance. She was trapped between his strong arms and the wash basin counter, feeling the intensity of his piercing gaze.
“But last night, you had plenty of wild ideas,” Lucius smirked, his voice teasing.
“They were drunken words,” Layla laughed lightly, trying to brush off the situation. “I have important work today, and if you keep holding me like this, I’m going to be late.”
Lucius tilted his head, eyes narrowing playfully. “What’s so important?” he demanded.
“I have an interview,” Layla admitted, her voice firm yet slightly nervous.
“Are you serious, babe?” Lucius arched an eyebrow in disbelief. “Your husband owns a company, and you applied somewhere else? Why would you do that when you could work with me?”
Layla hesitated, glancing away briefly. “I… I didn’t know you’d end up being my husband.”
“Well, now you do,” Lucius replied, his smirk softening into a more serious expression. “So, what position do you desire in my company?”
“I thought you were a mafia leader,” she muttered under her breath, but it was loud enough for him to catch.
His expression darkened for a brief moment before a slow smile crept back onto his face. “And you think that means I can’t run a legitimate business too?”
“Hmm,” Lucius murmured, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer.
“You’ve got fifteen minutes to get ready,” he said, finally stepping back, allowing her some space. As he turned to leave, he added with a teasing grin, “Oh, and I forgot to mention—you look fucking gorgeous when you moan. Soon, I want to hear you crying my name.” His voice was playful, but there was a dark, seductive edge to it that sent shivers down her spine.
Layla exhaled a deep breath once he left the washroom. Turning to face the mirror, she stared at her reflection, still feeling the lingering warmth of his touch. Her skin tingled, and her mind replayed his words, the intensity of his presence impossible to shake off.
‘Focus,’ she reminded herself, shaking her head to clear her thoughts. She couldn’t afford to get distracted. Not today. Taking another deep breath, she began her routine.

Meanwhile, in Rosenzweig Mansion, everyone was still terrified after what transpired last night. At the breakfast table, Miriam noticed the absence of Orabela, her daughter’s seat noticeably empty. Concerned, she excused herself.
“Honey, I’ll be back soon,” she said softly and made her way upstairs.
Reaching Orabela’s room, Miriam found the door ajar. She hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. “Orabela, why didn’t you come down? It’s breakfast time,” she asked, her voice filled with gentle concern.
Orabela remained curled up on her bed, her expression twisted in bitterness. “Mom, I’m not hungry. That bitch took away my appetite. Dad slapped me for the first time instead of throwing out his mistress! I hate everything, Mom! Layla is the jinx of my life,” Orabela spat, her words laced with venom.
Miriam’s heart ached at the sight of her daughter’s pain. She approached her, sitting beside her on the bed and softly running her hand over Orabela’s head, trying to soothe her. “I understand how you feel,” Miriam said softly. “But don’t starve yourself over this. We will find a way to get Seraphina out of this house. As for Layla… she won’t get away with what she’s done to you. I promise you, she’ll pay for it.”
“How will she pay for it, Mom? Lucius seems to be in love with her. Did you not hear what he said last night? He even said something to Roderick! He has stopped answering my calls and texts,” Orabela screamed in frustration as tears formed in her eyes.
Miriam got worried to see her daughter’s state. It all happened because Seraphina slapped Layla. Her heart clenched to see the sight of her daughter and she headed downstairs.
Darius stiffened as Miriam stormed down the staircase with a grim expression. He could sense something was wrong. “Orabela isn’t with you,” he said with a concerned glance.
Miriam’s expression remained unyielding. Seraphina, who had been sitting quietly, got up with the intention of bringing Orabela downstairs herself. However, before she could take a step forward, Miriam’s hand whipped across her face with a resounding slap.
“Miriam!” Darius roared, standing from his chair, but Miriam quickly silenced him with a fierce glare.
“Stay quiet, Husband!” Miriam’s voice was sharp, filled with fury. “Your mistress is the reason my daughter’s life is in shambles. You will throw her out of this house, or I will leave with Orabela!” she declared, her voice rising with emotion.
“Miriam, I can’t abandon you. You know this,” Darius said.
“And what about your mistress?” Miriam shot back, her eyes misting with hurt. “You cheated on me, Darius. Seraphina and Layla are ruining Orabela’s life. Can’t you see that? Or are you so blinded by your affair that you don’t care anymore?”
Seraphina, standing to the side, clenched her fists, clearly shaken by those accusations. She slowly sank to her knees before Miriam, her voice trembling.

“I apologize to all of you. Layla was the reason for Orabela’s suffering, and that’s why I wanted to speak with her. I had no idea Lucius would come here and cause so much trouble. Please, Miriam,” Seraphina pleaded, “forgive me. I never wanted to hurt Orabela. I care for her as if she were my own daughter.”
Miriam’s expression remained stony. “If you really saw Orabela as your daughter, then leave this house,” she commanded coldly.
Darius was about to step in when a quiet voice interrupted him.
“Mom, it’s not Layla’s mother’s fault,” Orabela said, walking toward them. She reached out, helping Seraphina stand, her actions surprising everyone in the room. Gently, she wiped the tears from Seraphina’s eyes before speaking again. “We’re a family, and families don’t fight like this. I always thought of Layla as my sister, even if she doesn’t see me the same way. I can’t change her feelings, but I can try to show everyone how strong we are as a family.”
Miriam looked at her daughter in disbelief while Seraphina’s tears fell freely, her guilt and gratitude was clear in them.
‘Layla, you shouldn’t have involved Lucius in this. Now, I will not stay quiet and destroy you completely,’ Orabela thought in her mind.
