Chapter 286: Roger, can we talk?
After the charity event concluded, Alekis pulled Layla aside, his gaze filled with surprise.
“Lucius and Roderick didn’t clash today.
What did you do?” he asked, studying her intently.
Layla sighed, recalling the tense moment at the graveyard.
“I told them to act like mature men, and I think I still hold some influence over Roderick because of our past relationship.
I ended up scolding him there,” she admitted, a trace of guilt in her voice.
Alekis gave her an approving nod.
“You did the right thing.
Rick always loses his temper when he sees Lucius on this day.
I’m relieved they managed to keep the peace.
You truly are a remarkable woman, Layla.
I’m proud of you,” he said, offering her a warm smile.
Layla felt a wave of appreciation at his words.
“Thank you, Father,” she said sincerely.
Then, glancing around, she noted Fiona’s unusually pale expression.
“Sister Fiona doesn’t seem well today.
Should I visit the house tonight?” Alekis shook his head gently.
“She’ll be fine by tomorrow.
There’s no need to worry.
Besides, Roderick is spending time with his mother today, so she won’t be alone,” he assured her.
Layla nodded, though a hint of concern still lingered in her eyes.
“You need to focus on the company for now.
I know you’ll do well, but I already have high expectations from you,” Alekis said, his tone firm yet encouraging.
Layla met his gaze with determination.
“Thank you for trusting me, Father.
I won’t disappoint you.” Glancing toward the waiting car, she added, “We should go now.
They must be waiting for us.” “Yes, let’s go,” Alekis agreed, stepping forward while Layla followed closely behind.
Once they reached the car, Layla and Lucius bid farewell to Alekis, Roderick, and Fiona.

Ivy had already left earlier, leaving only the two of them behind as the event officially came to an end.
Lucius turned to Layla, a rare softness present in his eyes.
“Everything went well today,” he said, gratitude lacing his voice.
“Thank you.” He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
Layla gave him a knowing look.
“It worked because you acted at the right moment.
You chose to listen to me, and that’s why Roderick is willing to give you both a chance.” Lucius exhaled with a contemplative expression.
“But none of it would have happened if you hadn’t been there,” he admitted, his gaze lingering on her.
He then pulled Layla into a warm embrace, his arms tightening around her.
He kissed the top of her head softly.
“I love you.
I love you so much,” he murmured.
They stayed like that for a few moments, a quiet, peaceful bubble surrounding them, before they finally broke apart and got into the car.
“Drop me at the company.
I have two meetings today,” Layla said, fastening the seatbelt.
“You can take the day off if you want.” Lucius raised an eyebrow, a hint of concern in his voice.
“What?
Why do you want to work today?
You can reschedule them.” He hoped she would reconsider, wanting her to spend the day with him instead.
Layla shook her head, her gaze focused on him with a calm look.
“I only need to be at the office for two hours for these meetings.
I would have postponed them, but the clients won’t be happy.
And as the new chairwoman, I can’t afford to look like I’m taking time off every now and then.” She paused, her tone softening slightly.
“You can join me at the office if you’d like.” She knew he was likely craving a quiet day, but she had planned to make time for them after finishing the work.
Lucius sighed but didn’t push the matter further, keeping his attention on the road as he nodded.
“Alright.” Layla smiled softly, her voice firm but reassuring.
“As soon as we finish work, we’ll do whatever you want today.” Lucius glanced at her briefly, a hint of affection in his eyes.
“It’s fine, Wife.
I understand.
You’re new in this position, and you need to focus on it.
I promised you I’d never stand in the way of your career.” He gave her a small, understanding smile.
“Thank you, Lucius,” Layla said, leaning back against the seat, her eyes softening as she relaxed.
As they drove, Lucius’ mind wandered briefly.
‘She’s just like Antoine when it comes to work.
Dad must have noticed that too…
while I can just ditch work whenever the mood strikes,’ he thought with a faint chuckle.
~~~~~ Roger stepped into the renowned rooftop café, a serene spot in the city that offered a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle.
The gentle breeze made it an ideal place for him to unwind.
Lucius had granted him the day off, and he couldn’t think of a better place than this one to spend his time.
He approached the counter and ordered a latte and a cheesecake pastry.
With his order in hand, he made his way to a quiet corner of the café, settling into a plush chair with a view of the city skyline.
Roger pulled out his phone, absentmindedly scrolling through messages and emails as he sipped his drink, enjoying the rare moment of peace.
Just then, he heard a voice he never wanted to.
Sylvia Mancini.
“I told you I’m not interested in you!
Can’t you get that through your head, Josh?” Sylvia’s sharp tone echoed across the café, instantly drawing the attention of everyone nearby.
Josh, his face a mix of confusion and frustration, stammered, “I thought you and I…
Last night…” He hesitated, then tried to pull her toward the door.
“Let’s go.
Too many people are looking at us.” Sylvia jerked her hand away with a cold expression.
“Just let me go.
Last night was just a heat of the moment thing.
You’re not even my type,” she declared.
Whispers spread quickly among the café’s patrons, eyes darting between the scene and their coffee cups.
Roger, however, remained unfazed.
He leaned back as he overheard the chaos.
“She still hasn’t learned to tone it down,” he muttered to himself, completely ignoring her presence and the drama unfolding.
“Roger, can we talk?” Sylvia suddenly asked him, breaking his peace.
