Chapter 319: A deadly fire
Layla shifted on the mattress and felt the absence of her husband. As her hand moved on it, she realized Lucius was not bed and promptly she opened her eyes.
“Lucius!” Layla sat up and turned around to find him on the chair, ready in an attire as if he was heading somewhere.
Lucius, who had taken a nap on the same chair, stood up to approach her. “Good morning, Wife.” He planted a soft kiss in the middle of her forehead and smiled. “I scared you, didn’t I? By the way, I am heading to Russia,” he said as he sat before her.
“Why?” Layla was shocked to hear that first thing in the morning.
“To catch Vladimir before he flees. Don’t worry. This time I am completely ready, Layla. I will bring his empire down because only I can do that,” Lucius stated with a determined gaze.
“Lucius, take me with you,” she said.
“I want you to take care of the things here. I think everyone here needs you,” Lucius replied. “And I can only trust you for that. Can you do that for me?”
Layla realized Lucius was no longer scared. He was speaking in the same confident tone as he always used to. “Fine. But we should inform Luca about your departure. If possible, take him with you. He is from the special forces, and if anything goes wrong, in the worst case scenario, he may be of great help.”
“You are right. I’ll call Luca then. Hopefully, he is awake,” Lucius stated and looked toward the bedside table. “But if Luca comes in between my plan, then I will not take him with me,” he added.
“Luca won’t do that,” Layla said.
“Luca won’t go against the government protocols. I understand his love for his job. However, I am not in a mood to keep alive either Vladimir or Tsar,” he affirmed. “While the government wants the two of them alive.”
“Fine. Do what you feel is right. But Lucius, you won’t step back now or be scared of anything. Inform me right away if you get stuck,” Layla suggested.
“Yeah, I will. Roger is also accompanying me. Now, I won’t delay anymore. The rest of the members in the family haven’t woken up yet. You can decide on whether to tell them where I have gone or keep it with them until my return.” Lucius left that decision on her.
“Of course, I will tell them. We don’t know yet hos long it will take for you to catch Vladimir. Well, now, you shouldn’t delay and leave,” Layla opined.
Lucius carried his phone and dialed Luca’s number. To his surprise, his call was answered in a few rings.
“Lucius, I was about to call you. We interrogated Tsar yesterday. The officials want both you and Layla to be here today. Tsar mentioned your names during the questioning,” Luca said, looking at him with a hint of urgency.
“Is it really necessary?” Lucius asked, his tone calm but skeptical.
“I tried to delay it, arguing that the civilians shouldn’t be involved in this. But one of my senior colleagues insisted that since you’re connected to the underworld, your presence is crucial,” Luca explained from the other side.
“Alright, I’ll come, but it’ll be later today, perhaps in the evening or at night,” Lucius replied in a firm tone. “But there’s something else I need to discuss. I’m heading to Russia. Vladimir needs to be caught before he slips away. Do you want to join me? But make no mistake—this won’t be like the protocols you follow here. You’ll have to follow my lead if you choose to come.”
Luca stared at him, disbelief written all over his face. “That’s insane. You don’t even know where Vladimir is hiding. How do you expect to catch him?”
“I know. I lied to you,” Lucius admitted, his voice low. “Now, tell me—are you willing to forget the protocols if it means catching him?” he asked with his intense gaze.
Luca paused, his mind working through the offer. After a long moment, he responded, “I’ve already written my resignation letter.”
Lucius frowned in confusion. “What do you mean?”
Luca’s voice was calm but firm. “Do I need to come to the airport?” he asked, not revealing the true reason behind his decision.
“No. Meet me at my place. We’ll be taking my private jet,” Lucius replied, giving the final instructions.
Luca hummed in acknowledgment, and without another word, the call ended.
“What did he say? You looked surprised!” Layla asked with a worried gaze.
“He’s written a resignation letter,” Lucius said, his voice edged with curiosity. “I don’t know why. He didn’t give a reason behind it.”
Layla blinked, clearly caught off guard. “Wait… He’s written a resignation? He didn’t mention anything about that.” Her surprise deepened as she processed his next question. “Did he ever tell you he’s a distant relative of Matteo?”
Layla shook her head vigorously. “No. Never. Luca told you that?” The revelation stunned her. She’d never imagined that Luca and Matteo could be connected in any way.

“Yeah,” Lucius confirmed, his tone quiet but serious.
“I never asked him about his family,” Layla explained. “Once, he told me they all died in a deadly fire. After that, I didn’t want to bring it up again.”
Lucius’ gaze darkened slightly. “Hmm. Vladimir Romanov murdered his family too.” There was a strange flicker in his eyes, a momentary flash of disgust. ‘I am his son, and the mere thought of it disgusts me.’
Layla, sensing his unease, squeezed his hand, her voice soft but firm. “Vladimir ended so many lives without a second thought,” she murmured, her eyes holding a gentle understanding. “But you’re not like him, Lucius. You may be his biological son, but you aren’t him. Don’t feel like you have to answer to anyone. You’re a victim too,” she added giving him a reassurance that he had to nothing to do with Vladimir’s crimes.
Lucius didn’t utter a single word, but his wife’s words not only comforted him, but also strengthened him.
