Chapter 324: Matteo’s Death Truth (2)
Matteo parked the car outside an old, crumbling house near an overgrown garden. The structure was in a state of decay, its walls cracked and weathered by time.
Pulling out his phone, he dialed Tsar’s number. Before the call could connect, a familiar ringtone echoed from nearby. Matteo’s hand froze and his gaze snapped toward the source.
Ending the call, he slid his phone back into his pocket and turned to face Tsar, a deep frown forming on his forehead.
“How long have you known?” Matteo asked.
“Does it even matter? You betrayed me. You betrayed my father. And in turn, I’ve killed your trusted men.”
Matteo clenched his fists as he learned that Xander and others were dead. But what relieved him that Lucius, Demitri, Roger and Aiden were alive because he had kept them away from this matter for a long time.
Without warning, Tsar shot out his hand to grab Matteo’s arm, but Matteo deflected the attack, shoving him back.
“Tell me where my brother is,” Tsar demanded, his eyes narrowing in anger and frustration.
Matteo smirked. “I don’t know.”
With one swift motion, he reached for the pistol tucked at his side, but before he could aim, Tsar’s assistant sprang into action, disarming him effortlessly. Matteo barely had time to react before he was shoved to the ground, his arms wrenched behind his back.
Tsar stepped forward, gripping Matteo’s hair and yanking his head up, forcing their eyes to meet.
“You think I’ll let you live if you don’t tell me the truth?” Tsar yelled at him, his grip on Matteo’s hair tightening.
Matteo winced but let out a low chuckle. “You think threatening my life will make me talk?” His smirk widened. “You’ll never find your brother because he was never in Italy to begin with.”
Tsar let out a dark, humorless laugh. His grip tightened, and in one swift motion, he pulled Matteo up before wrapping a hand around his throat.
“You played us. But now, you’ll pay the price.”
Matteo’s breath hitched, but his defiance didn’t waver. “I never knew who your brother was,” he admitted. “But I had an old score to settle with you and Vladimir Romanov. That’s why I planned the attack. And to the very end, I fooled you.” He let out a bitter chuckle. “I almost won. But I suppose it wasn’t in my fate to end the Romanovs.”
Tsar’s jaw clenched, his grip tightening around Matteo’s throat. There was no mercy in his eyes.
Tsar’s grip on the gun tightened while his finger hovered just above the trigger. His icy blue eyes, similar to Lucius’s eyes, darkened with restrained fury as he stared down at Matteo.
“You’re a fool if you think you can manipulate me with words,” Tsar said. “The Romanovs are untouchable, Matteo. You made a fatal mistake by thinking otherwise.”
He pressed the gun harder against Matteo’s abdomen. “Now, I’ll ask one last time—where is my brother?”
Matteo chuckled with a mocking tone. “I don’t know, Tsar. I played you. Can’t you see?” He smirked despite the looming threat of death. “And what’s stopping you from pulling the trigger? The Tsar I knew never gave second chances. Or—” Matteo’s voice lowered, his smirk deepening as he gazed up at him. “Has your heart softened? Is it because of the friendship we once had?”
Tsar’s jaw clenched at the provocation.
Matteo needed to push him over the edge, needed to make sure Tsar never set foot in Italy again. If his death was inevitable, he would make sure Lucius remained safe. The Romanovs could never know the truth.
“Tsar, when the mafias will learn about how you were fooled by me, they will laugh at you,” Matteo said and finally, Tsar landed a brutal punch on his face. Matteo’s vision blurred instantly and he shook his head. He coughed blood and wiped his blood instantly as he attacked Tsar with all this force.
But Tsar caught his fist and twisted it before kicking him away.
The phone in Matteo’s pocket rang as it was Lucius calling him.
Matteo fought till the very end, but couldn’t stand before Tsar. His face was dripped in blood while his knuckles had bruised.
Tsar finally pointed a gun at Matteo’s abdomen and fired a bullet on his stomach. He fell to the ground with a loud thud, his eyes closing, but he wasn’t dead.
Tsar kicked Matteo’s body and he was now lying on his back. Pain exploded through his entire body and his eyes slowly closed.
“Let’s go,” Tsar told his assistant and turned to leave. He entered in the car and drove away with his assistant while Matteo remained lay in a pool of his own blood.

Matteo didn’t know how long he had been lying there, drifting in and out of consciousness, until he heard Lucius’s voice.
“Matteo!” Lucius called out as he knelt beside him. He pressed a hand against Matteo’s stomach, trying to stem the bleeding that seeped through his fingers.
With great effort, Matteo’s eyes fluttered open. His breath was shallow as he looked up at Lucius, who had pulled up in his embrace. “How… how did you find me?” he asked. He rested his head against Lucius’s chest, drawing in shaky breaths.
“Someone reported hearing gunshots in the area,” Lucius replied. “I’ve already called an ambulance—they’ll be here soon. Just hold on.” His eyes glistened, betraying the fear of losing Matteo he tried to suppress.
Matteo weakly grasped Lucius’s hand, shaking his head. “I won’t make it,” he murmured.
“Don’t say that,” Lucius pleaded. “Please. Just stay quiet. You’re going to be okay.”
A faint, pained smile crossed Matteo’s lips. With what little strength he had left, he whispered, “Lucius… leave the mafia. And take care of Sylvia. You are the best person I ever met in this life.”
With that Matteo closed his eyes as his soul departed his body. Lucius left with nothing but remorse and regret as he screamed at the top of his lungs.
