Chapter 333: Taking a break
“Grandma, why don’t you rest for a while?” Demitri said gently, glancing at his grandmother as she busied herself with household chores. “The maid will be here soon to clean the house, so you don’t have to worry about it.”
Alessia scoffed, setting down the cloth she had been using to wipe the table. “And why shouldn’t you do such a small task yourself? You stay at home all day!” she chided, narrowing her eyes at him.
Demitri let out a sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. “Grandma, I work late into the night. That’s why I wake up late in the morning. It’s not that I don’t want to help, but I barely get enough rest as it is.” He softened his tone, hoping to placate her. “Please, just ignore the cleaning for now and come with me. Let me show you to your room.”
As he held his grandmother’s arm and began walking with her, Alessia said, “That’s why you should get married. When your wife will scold you, you may realize. By the way, what happened to your date with Nora? Didn’t you like her?” She pressed.
“Grandma, we haven’t spoken since that day,” Demitri said, his tone neutral.
“Then call her,” Alessia suggested firmly. “You should show some interest now. Do you want to grow old all by yourself?”
Demitri sighed and decided to steer the conversation elsewhere. “Grandma, this is your bedroom. You should rest for a while. You traveled a long way, and I don’t want you to tire yourself out. After you wake up, I’ll cook a nice meal for us,” he said, deliberately ignoring her previous remark.
Alessia studied her grandson for a moment and realized he had no real interest in marriage. “Do you perhaps like men?” she suddenly asked.
“No, Grandma!” Demitri immediately denied, shaking his head. “I’m single because I feel there’s still time for all that. And you know I had a relationship in the past. It just didn’t work out, so I’m taking a break before getting into anything new,” he explained.
“Alright,” Alessia said, deciding not to press further. She patted his arm before lying down.
Demitri pulled the duvet over her and adjusted it properly. “Get some rest, Grandma,” he said softly before stepping out of the room. He carefully closed the door behind him and made his way to the living room.
The doorbell rang, and he opened it to find Miss Whitely, the maid he had hired, standing at the entrance. She greeted him politely.
Demitri explained her tasks for the day and specifically instructed her not to enter the second room to the left of the stairs. Once everything was settled, he went upstairs to his cozy office space and turned on his computer.
“Let’s see what I have to do today,” he murmured to himself, scanning the screen.
He leaned back in his swivel chair, casually stretching his legs as he began working on his codes. His fingers moved swiftly over the keyboard, fully immersed in the task. An hour passed until a soft knock on the door made him lift his gaze from the screen.
Miss Whitely stood at the entrance, waiting for his acknowledgment. Without saying much, Demitri gave her a slight nod, allowing her to continue her work in the office. He then refocused on his screen, his mind diving back into lines of code.
Just as he was about to make another adjustment, his phone buzzed on the desk. He picked it up and checked the notification—a message from the bank. They required him to submit some documents. Sighing, he placed the phone down, making a mental note to take care of it later.
After a while, once Miss Whitely had finished her tasks, she took her leave. Demitri thanked her with a nod. He quietly stepped into his grandmother’s room and found her still fast asleep. Not wanting to disturb her, he carefully backed out and closed the door.
Heading to the kitchen, he prepared a warm meal for her, ensuring everything was set neatly on the table. He then grabbed a notepad and scribbled a quick note:
“Grandma, I’ve made food for you. Please eat when you wake up. I’ve gone to the bank—I’ll be back soon.”
Placing the note beside the plate, he grabbed the keys of his car and left for the bank.

“It’s done, sir,” the bank employee informed Demitri, handing him back the passbook.
“Thank you,” Demitri replied, accepting the new master card before turning to leave. Stepping out of the bank, he walked toward his car.
However, as Demitri’s gaze unintentionally drifted across the street, he spotted Nora, surrounded by a few men, whom he recognized from a few weeks ago, the same group that had been pestering her that night.
“I’ve already paid the desired amount to your boss,” Nora said. “If you keep bothering me like this, I’ll go to the police.”
One of the men, unfazed, sneered and pulled a knife from his jacket, holding it up to her face. “Do it, then,” he taunted.
Demitri’s instincts kicked in and he quickly dialed the nearest station’s number. He complained them about the day light’s threatening while walking toward Nora.
“Hey, step back!” Demitri said sharply, stepping in front of Nora to shield her.
“Stay back, you fucker!” the second man shouted, pulling a knife from his pocket, his grip tightening around the handle.

Before the situation could escalate further, another man in the group nudged his companions. “Hey, let’s leave!” he said in a hushed but urgent tone.
Without another word, the four men turned and ran, disappearing into the streets before a crowd could gather.
Demitri exhaled sharply and turned to Nora, his frustration evident. “Are you alright? Why do you always get into trouble?” His voice was louder than intended. “I told you to contact me if you need any kind of help!”
As his eyes flickered to the people who had started gathering around, he quickly addressed them. “There’s nothing going on here,” he said firmly, ensuring they didn’t linger.
Just as Nora opened her mouth to respond, the wailing sound of a police siren echoed through the street. Without wasting a second, Demitri walked toward the approaching officers.
“I was the one who called you,” he informed them. “There were four men harassing my friend, and they’ve been troubling her for a long time.”
Nora hesitated but eventually stepped forward, reluctantly confirming Demitri’s words. The officers listened carefully, taking notes as she explained the repeated harassment.
Once the report was filed, one of the cops assured her, “We’ll investigate the matter. As soon as we catch them, we’ll contact you.”
Demitri thanked the officers before they headed off to begin their search for the four men.
“Follow me,” he said to Nora, his tone leaving no room for argument. Without a word, she quietly walked behind him and slid into the passenger seat of his car.
As he started the engine, he asked, “Have you taken the day off?”
“Yes,” Nora replied, gripping the strap of her sling bag. She hesitated for a moment before adding, “Thank you for earlier. I didn’t want to disturb you… I had already returned all the money, but they suddenly increased the interest.”
Demitri’s jaw tightened. “What’s the name of their boss?”
Nora blinked at him, taken aback by the sudden question. “Oliver Warrick,” she finally answered, her voice cautious. “Why?”
Demitri didn’t immediately respond. His fingers drummed lightly against the steering wheel as his mind worked through the information.
“You don’t need to worry about them anymore,” he finally said, “I’ll handle it.”
“How? They’re dangerous men,” Nora said, her voice laced with concern.
“I know,” Demitri admitted. “Loan sharks like them are usually tied to gangs. I’ll talk to Lucius about it. You must have heard his name.” He tilted his head slightly, glancing at her.
Nora frowned and shook her head. “Lucius De Salvo? The director of the company?” she asked, as if making sure she’d heard correctly.
“Yes,” Demitri confirmed.
Her confusion deepened. “How will the director help me?”
Demitri hesitated for a split second before responding. “He just will. I’ll explain your situation to him.” He shifted the conversation, not wanting her to dwell on it. “Where’s your home? I’ll drop you off.”
“It’s alright, I—” Nora started, but before she could finish, Demitri’s phone rang.
He hushed her with a gesture before answering. “Yes, Grandma, I’m on my way home. Just eat the food I left for you. I might be late.” His expression was calm until his brows suddenly shot up. “What? How can you ask me something like that?” He was momentarily stunned by his grandmother’s unexpected request.
“Just call Nora here. I talked to her uncle earlier and he told me that Nora has a day off. You have her number, right? If not, then I will send you. I want to see how much Nora has grown,” Alessia stated from the other side.
Demitri gazed at Nora, who was simply fiddling with the strap of her sling bag. “I have her number. I’ll be home shortly,” he said and hung up the call.
