Chapter 338: An odd relationship
Demitri wiped down the countertop, ensuring everything was spotless after dinner. Earlier, he had made sure his grandmother took her medication and settled into bed. As he rinsed the washcloth and hung it near the basin, he heard Nora’s voice behind him.
“I’ll do the dishes.”
Demitri immediately turned off the tap. “No,” he said firmly, facing her. “You should go to the bedroom.” His tone left no room for argument. “I’ll bring you a pair of clothes—just wait for me in the living room.”
Without waiting for her response, he turned back to the sink and resumed washing.
But Nora didn’t budge from her place.
“Do you have to say something to me?” Demitri raised his head to look at her. She promptly shook her head and went to the living room.
Sitting on the couch, she waited for him and picked up her phone from the table. She scrolled through the messages and entered the group chat of her fellow receptionists.
“I got a gossip guys. Do you know our chairwoman is spotted with another man other than her husband?”
Nora furrowed her brows together, thinking why they were speaking in such a manner.
“Really, who?”
“Are you saying that the chairwoman and the director not going well together?”
Just then, a photo popped up in the group. It was of Layla and Luca, walking out of the rotating doors of their company.
“Ahh, they do look close.”
“The director doesn’t leave with the chairwoman these days. It seems they both are in an odd relationship.”
Nora kept reading those chats and decided to type that they should not spread such rumors.
However, she wondered if it would be right to say anything to them as they all were her seniors in the job. She bit her bottom lip, debating on what to do.
“I’m done.” Just then, Demitri’s voice came through and she lifted her head.
“Is there any trouble?” he asked, noticing how her brows were knitted together.
“Uh-no,” Nora said. However, her inner voice encouraged her to speak.
“There are gossips circulating around regarding the chairwoman and her husband,” Nora revealed to him.
“What gossips?” Demitri mused and sat across from her on the sofa chair.
“Umm…” Nora forewarded her phone to him, showing him the group chats, “here. You can read them.”
Demitri held her phone and began reading them. He chuckled how the rumors spread without any meaning.
“I wanted to tell them not to do this since it’s wrong. But I felt I should keep my mouth shut since they all are seniors,” Nora stated.
“That’s good,” Demitri replied. “Luca is like a big brother to Layla. If Lucius will see this, he is going to fire them all,” he added with a chuckle, handing back the phone to her.
“What? Please, don’t tell your friend about this,” Nora requested.
“Why?” Demitri leaned forward. “Such rumors can affect Layla’s image. If not today, Lucius will find out later. So, it’s better if he knows all of this beforehand,” he affirmed.
“But I don’t want anyone to get fired. It’s like whistleblowing,” Nora murmured and got worried.
“I won’t take your name. I will just tell him to shut off those rumors,” Demitri asserted.
“But he’s the director. What if he chooses to fire them all? I will tell my colleagues not to do such gossips,” she stated.

“I don’t think they’ll agree with you on this,” Demitri remarked, watching her closely.
“Why not? I’ll tell them it’s wrong to spread gossip when they don’t even know the truth,” Nora countered with a stern tone.
Demitri sighed, shaking his head. “Nora, that’s not how the world works. They won’t believe you. In fact, they might even laugh at you.”
“Oh.” Her confidence wavered as she lowered her gaze.
“But,” he continued, offering her a reassuring smile, “you’re a good person. Instead of fueling those rumors, you want to stop them. That says a lot about your character.”
Nora nodded at him, but before she could respond, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, then quickly answered.
“What? Now?” Her expression shifted to surprise. “Okay. I’ll be there.” She ended the call abruptly.
“What happened?” Demitri asked.
“I need to go to the police station. They’ve caught them,” she replied.
“Let’s go, then,” Demitri said, rising to his feet.
“I can go by myself,” Nora insisted. “You should stay with your grandmother. It’s late.”
“Grandma is asleep,” Demitri countered. “And even if she were awake, she’d tell me to go with you. I’m not letting you go alone, especially at this hour.” His tone left no room for argument. “I’ll grab the car keys from my room. Wait here.” With that, he hurried upstairs.
Nora pulled on the thick jacket she had left on the couch and slung her bag over her shoulder. Moments later, Demitri returned, bundled up for the cold.
“It’s snowing outside,” he noted as he stepped ahead of her, leading the way.
Nora followed him out and settled into the passenger seat as he started the car. Soon, they were on their way to the station.
As they drove through the quiet, snow-dusted streets, Nora’s fingers tightened around the strap of her bag. “What if Oliver Warrick comes looking for me?” she asked, her voice laced with worry. “They were released on bail before, too.”
Demitri realised that he needed to talk to Lucius regarding this soon. Nora was living in fear and being a close person to his grandmother, he felt he should help Nora.
“Don’t worry. I told you I would talk to Lucius. He will put an end to them,” Demitri stated.
“How? Even the police can’t stop them. I have faced this in the past too. Money speaks in such matters,” Nora asserted.
“Don’t you know?” Demitri asked.
“What do I have to know?” Nora gazed at him confusedly.
“Lucius De Salvo is known in the mafia world. He has wiped out many gangsters in the past. Many fear him, so just relax. You will get rid of these lowly gangsters soon,” Demitri stated with a warm smile.
