Chapter 342: Lost my phone
Roger checked his watch again, sighing as he realized Varya still hadn’t answered his calls. She had asked him to meet her at the hotel, but hours had passed, and she was nowhere to be seen.
Deciding he had waited long enough, he stood up, ready to leave. But just as he turned around, he came to an abrupt halt.
Varya was rushing toward him, her breathing heavy as if she had just run from outside.
“I lost my phone,” she blurted out the moment she reached him.
Roger’s brows furrowed in shock. “What? How?”
Varya exhaled deeply, pushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “I went out earlier to explore the area, and I must’ve left it in a café. I didn’t realize it until it was too late. I already reported it to the police.” She looked at him with a troubled expression. “I’m sorry for making you wait so long.”
Roger studied her for a moment before shaking his head. “It’s fine. Let’s just get you a new phone and a SIM card.”
Before Varya could respond, a voice interrupted them.
“Excuse me, are you Miss Varya Sokolov?”
They both turned to see the hotel receptionist standing behind the desk.
“Yes?” Varya replied, clearly confused.
The receptionist held up a familiar device. “Your phone. You left it in our hotel’s café.”
Varya’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What?” She brought a hand to her forehead, shaking her head before grabbing the phone. “Oh my god, thank you so much.”
The receptionist simply nodded before walking back to her desk.
“I’m such a fool,” Varya muttered under her breath, staring at the device in her hands.
Roger couldn’t help but chuckle. “Well, at least you found it. You should call the police and let them know.”
“Yeah…” Varya reached into her pocket and pulled out a small slip of paper with the police station’s number. She quickly dialed, and as soon as the officer picked up, she spoke, “Hello, Officer. This is Varya Sokolov. I reported a missing phone earlier, but I’ve found it. I’m really sorry for the trouble.”
After a brief exchange, she ended the call and turned to Roger.
“Let’s go,” she said, slipping her phone into her pocket.
They walked toward the elevator, but as the hotel was crowded, they found themselves pressed close together once inside.
Roger instinctively moved to shield her from the people around them, placing his hand on the wall behind her. His eyes drifted downward, only to find Varya staring right at him.
Unlike him, she seemed unaffected by their proximity. But for Roger, it was a different story. He could feel the warmth between them, the way his pulse quickened in the confined space.
He quickly looked away, forcing himself to focus elsewhere as the elevator slowly emptied.
Finally, when the crowd had thinned, he took a step back, creating some distance between them.
Upon reaching the 17th floor, they arrived at her suite. Varya pressed the card against the door lock, and it clicked open.
“Come in,” she said.
Roger stepped inside first, with Varya following close behind. As she shut the door, she slid the key card into the slot near the entrance and removed her muffler and coat. Roger followed her into the suite’s living area, where she settled onto the couch and motioned for him to do the same.
“Lucius told me to come to you if I needed anything while in Italy,” Varya said.
“Yeah, I’ll help you out during your stay in Rome,” Roger replied.
Varya poured herself a glass of water and took a sip. She was exhausted from all the running around since the afternoon. Setting the empty glass on the table, she said, “I’d like to visit Matteo’s grave tomorrow. And I want to see his sister as well.”

“His sister?” Roger looked momentarily flustered.
Varya caught the troubled expression flickering across his face. “Is there a problem with me seeing her?” she asked.
Roger hesitated before replying. “Well, Sylvia has a sharp tongue. If you meet her, it’s best to ignore her attitude,” he said, keeping his explanation brief.
“Matteo once mentioned that his sister was always angry,” Varya mused. “I suppose it’s because she lost her family when she was quite young.”
Roger hummed in response, choosing not to reveal more. It wasn’t his place to tell Varya things she didn’t yet know.
“How long did you wait for me?” Varya asked, glancing at Roger.
“More than four hours,” he replied.
She frowned. “You should have gone home.”
Roger shrugged. “It’s your first time in this country. I felt it was right to wait for you.”
“Still, that was too much,” Varya muttered, studying him. “Why are you so soft?”
“I’m not soft,” Roger countered, a hint of defensiveness in his tone.
“You are,” she insisted, a small smirk playing on her lips. Leaning back against the couch, she added, “Do you want to have dinner with me? Recommend a nice place.”
“Umm… You won’t find a nice place around here,” Roger said. “We’ll have to go a little farther.”
“Okay, then. Let’s go—if you’re not too tired,” Varya said.
“I thought you were the one who was tired,” he pointed out.
“Yeah, but I’m hungry too,” she replied with a small shrug.
Roger chuckled. “Then let’s go.” He stood up, and Varya followed as they left the suite.
Once they stepped outside the hotel, Roger turned to her. “Wait here. I’ll get the car,” he said before heading toward the parking lot.
Varya kept her hands inside the pocket of her long coat and looked up at the sky. She came out of her thoughts when Roger pressed the horn of his car. She opened the door and quickly got in.
As she wore her seatbelt, Roger pressed the accelerator and drove off to a fine dining restaurant.
“Matteo never mentioned about you when he was alive,” Roger began, trying to break the ice between them.
“Well, he was kind of a secretive person, I believe. Even I didn’t know about any of you,” Varya stated.
“Did you like Matteo?” Roger asked straightforwardly.
