Chapter 348: Considering getting engaged
Roger applied the brakes, bringing the car to a gentle stop outside the graveyard. Without exchanging a word, he and Varya stepped out as they made their way inside.
In her hands, Varya carried a bouquet of white lilies, the flowers Matteo had loved the most.
As they walked across the damp, grassy ground, a cold wind swept through the cemetery, rustling the leaves.
Finally, Roger came to a stop. His gaze fell upon the gravestone in front of him—Matteo’s name etched into the stone. His throat tightened, but he said nothing, simply staring at the grave.
Varya glanced at it and her eyes brimmed with years. She placed the flowers over the gravestone and stayed on her knees for a while as she offered a silent prayer.
After some time, Varya stood up and wiped the tears from her eyes using the pads of her fingers. “He was a good soul. I hope he’s resting in peace now,” Varya said with a soft smile, placing the lilies gently on the grave.
Roger nodded, his gaze still fixed on Matteo’s name. “Yeah. His killers got punished, so he must be at peace,” he whispered.
They stood there in silence for a while, letting the wind carry away their unspoken thoughts before finally turning back toward the car.
As Roger fastened his seatbelt, Varya glanced at him. “How did Matteo save you?” she asked, curiosity laced in her voice.
Roger leaned back against the headrest, exhaling softly before speaking. “I had a drunkard father,” he began as if revisiting a past he had long buried. “He used to beat me up whenever I failed to bring money for him. I was just a kid back then… still in school.”
Varya remained quiet, listening intently as Roger continued.
“I didn’t have it easy at school either. I was bullied, especially by my seniors. Once, a group of them beat me up for not bringing them cigarettes and money. That’s when Matteo stepped in.”
A faint smile crossed his lips as he recalled the moment. “He saved me that day—stood up for me when no one else did. After that, he kept looking out for me. Later, I chose to stand by him in return.”
Varya studied his expression, seeing the gratitude and sorrow in his eyes. Matteo wasn’t just a savior to Roger—he was family.
“However, I spent most of my time by my boss’s side. Matteo used to ask me to pick up his sister sometimes. Other than that, I didn’t know much about him,” he asserted and finally met her gaze.
“Hmm. Matteo was soft at heart and could do anything for those who were his family. I remember him saying that he had a large family in Rome after his parents passed away. I’m sure he referred to all of you,” Varya stated with a smile.
Roger hummed and turned on the engine when Varya’s next words caused him to look at her.
“Matteo and I were considering getting engaged,” Varya revealed. “The last time we met he said he would have to protect someone in Rome. I didn’t ask him because I thought it must be related to his work. But he never returned after that day. I got to know he died at a mafia’s hands,” she asserted and tears escaped her eyes, puring down her cheeks. She lowered her head and clasped her hands together.
Roger didn’t know what to do in such a situation. He was speechless but he moved his hand to hers and pressed them to give her a silent comfort.
“We both lost our families. I-I could have helped him with my resources if only he had told me it was Tsar whom he wanted to end,” Varya said as she sobbed. She never shared such a personal matter to anyone before. But she ended up telling Roger, so that he would not keep any hope to pursue her.
After some time when Varya stopped crying, Roger pulled away his hand and turned to the backseat. There were two water bottles. He picked on and handed it to Varya after opening its cap.
“Drink it,” he said.
Varya wiped her tears with the back of her hand before accepting the water bottle from Roger. She drank slowly, letting the cool liquid soothe her throat, then handed it back to him.
“Shall we go?” Roger asked after a moment.
“Yeah,” she replied, fastening her seatbelt. Then, without looking at him, she added firmly, “Don’t pursue me, Roger. I can’t move on from Matteo.”
Roger turned to her. “You rejected me even before I could even start,” he murmured. He exhaled and shifted his gaze back to the road. “Matteo must want you to move on. I’m not saying it has to be with me, but… you should at least consider giving yourself a chance,” he advised gently.
Varya remained silent, her fingers tightening in her lap. Instead of responding, she turned her head to look out of the window.
Roger didn’t push further. He simply drove her back to the hotel, stealing one last glance at her as she stepped out of the car and disappeared inside.
Leaning back, he rested his head against the headrest and sighed. “Why does my heart have to fall for her?” he murmured to himself. “I don’t think she will ever give me a chance… and I won’t ever try for her.”
Meanwhile, Varya entered her hotel room and removed her thick, long coat. She let out a deep breath and sank onto the couch.

Pulling out her phone from her pocket, she scrolled through her contacts before pressing a name.
The call rang a few times before Sylvia picked up.
“Is this Sylvia Mancini?” asked Varya.
“Yes. Who are you?” Sylvia questioned.
“I am Varya Sokolov. I wish to meet you. Can we see each other later in the afternoon?” Varya waited for her response.
“Sorry! I don’t know you,” Sylvia replied.
“Yes, you don’t. But I do. I am someone related to Matteo,” Varya asserted.
Sylvia frowned to hear that. Her brother was involved with a woman! That was the first thought that came in her mind. “Let’s meet. I’ll send you the address,” she stated.
“Thank you. I’ll wait for you reply,” Varya expressed her gratitude and the call disconnected.
