Chapter 373: To keep a distance
Nora looked at the lock hanging on the main gate of Demitri’s house and sighed. She came so far to return the items, but he wasn’t at home. But then it wasn’t Demitri’s fault. She was the one, who didn’t inform him.
“Should I wait for him?” Nora murmured and looked around, finding the street was filled with only silence.
She leaned against the wall and looked at her wristwatch. Sharp three in the afternoon. He should be returning soon, she thought. Two hours passed, but there was no sign of Demitri.
“Should I call him?” Nora murmured for the tenth time, but then she shook her head. Demitri was avoiding her and at the same time, she didn’t want to be bother to him. The wind was turning colder now and she rubbed her hands together.
She got on her knees while holding her knees together and placed her hands on her cheeks. “I think I should leave,” Nora decided when she heard the sound of a bike. As she stood up, she found the bike halted right before Demitri’s house.
Nora’s hair blew to the front with the cold air.
Demitri removed his helmet and his eyes met with hers. He saw two bags in her hands and got down from his bike while holding the two bags. “What are you doing here?” he asked. He noticed how red her nose and cheeks were.
“I visited you to return these. And this is for you. It’s a fruit cake,” Nora stated and sneezed. Covering her mouth she apologized.
Demitri chuckled and opened the lock, asking her to follow him inside. Nora walked behind him and they were soon inside his house. “Have a seat,” he said and went to the kitchen.
Shortly, he returned with a warm glass of water and asked her to drink it. Nora thanked him and drank the water slowly.
“I’ll make coffee for you,” Demitri said.
“No, it’s fine,” Nora said as she rested the glass on the table.
“You may catch cold if you don’t drink something hot,” Demitri said as he removed his thick jacket. He went back to the kitchen while Nora waited for him while keeping her hands on her lap.
She looked at the fruit cake box she bought for him and stood up from her place. Heading to the kitchen, Nora saw him preparing the coffee and she cleared her throat.
“You should eat this fruit cake later,” Nora replied.
She stood there after putting the cake box on the counter.
“How am I supposed to eat the whole cake? You need to help me finishing it,” Demitri said. He turned to face Nora and continued, “Take out the plates and place two slices in them.”
Nora hummed and began doing it. She smiled thinking Demitri didn’t ask her to take that cake back. After a moment of contemplation, Nora said, “Forgive me for that night. I didn’t mean to hurt you or your grandmother. You’ve been a great guy and the greatest person I’ve met so far. I humiliated you by saying those words. I am truly–” she couldn’t utter the last word as she felt Demitri’s presence right behind her. Nora felt his chest pressed her back and she tilted her head.
“Here’s your coffee,” Demitri said and their eyes locked.
“Th-thank you,” Nora stuttered and looked at her front. Meanwhile, Demitri took a step away and carried the plates to the living room. They both settled on the couch and enjoyed the fruit cake with coffee.
Nora felt her body got warm.
“You shouldn’t wait for someone like that. How long were you here? You could have called me if you are here earlier,” Demitri stated.
“I thought you would not pick up my call,” Nora replied with a bit hesitation in her voice.
“I’m not heartless,” Demitri replied. “You told me to stay away and I did that. You don’t make rich friends, you said.”
“That’s not what I mean,” Nora said.
“Then, please explain what you meant by that.” Demitri lowered the coffee mug.
“Umm… I always thought people who are at higher rank than me are arrogant and selfish. That’s how I’ve seen people so far. You may feel like it’s an excuse, but even at the workplace, my colleagues were not happy that I knew you. That night they said I got this job because I know you. I can get anything with my resources. That was why I took out my anger at you, which was definitely wrong. I am genuinely sorry for that,” Nora said and she lowered her eyes in embarrassment.
“I see. Finish your cake. I’ll drop you home,” Demitri said.
“It’s fine. I can go by myself. I need to do some grocery shopping too, so I won’t be going straight home,” Nora asserted.
“I’ll drop you home,” Demitri repeated his words, not desiring any argument from her. “I told Lucius about you and the loansharks. It was necessary. I heard from the police that they might be released soon, so I wanted to make sure you remain safe.”

Nora was astounded to learn that. She was too grateful to him but except a thank you she couldn’t say anything more. “It means a lot, Demitri. Thank you for being such a kind soul,” she stated with a small smile.
“Well, we can be friends, if you want,” Demitri said, smiling at her.
“Sure. I would love to,” Nora said, her eyes glistening with tears. “But when you’ll have a girlfriend we may have to keep a distance,” she asserted.
Demitri didn’t know why those words play in his mind, but he uttered them, “Why don’t you date me?” Once they were out, there was no turning back. Demitri simply blinked and his fingers curled around the mug. “Nevermind. I said that–”
“If you don’t mind the differences in our positions, I will,” Nora pronounced, surprising Demitri. She felt how her heart suddenly started beating in anticipation.
