Chapter 375: Better with glasses
Nora thanked Demitri for carrying the bags for her and placed them on the counter. “Do you want to drink water?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Demitri said and sat on the small couch in the living area. Her eyes wandered around her house when Nora came with a tray in her hands.
“Thanks.” Demitri lifted the glass and sipped the water slowly.
“This isn’t big like yours,” Nora said.
“Why do you get concerned about such things?” Demitri mused, placing the glass on the table. “A house is a house whether it’s small or a big.”
Nora bit her bottom lip and took away the glass of water to the kitchen.
“You should find a property near the company. It must be tiresome to commute,” Demitri suggested.
Nora turned around and found him on the kitchen’s door. “I am looking for a one room apartment. I may shift if I find a budget friendly house,” she asserted.
“Hmm. Do tell me once,” Demitri replied.
“Sure.” Nora nodded at him. “Do you want to have dinner here? I will cook quickly,” she opined. “I am asking because I’ve eaten so many times at your house.”
Demitri smiled. “I would love to. Since we agreed to date each other, I think we can consider it as a dinner date,” he said. He was moving faster than he had believed. Yesterday only, he was telling Lucius he might not be dating. But here they were. His heart fluttered with an unknown feeling which just had started developing.
“I can help you if you want,” Demitri said.
“No. I’ll prepare everything to night. You need to sit and enjoy,” Nora pronounced with a smile. She gestured to him to sit outside, in the living area.
“Let’s see how good cook Nora is,” Demitri remarked. “I think I’ll stay in the kitchen because I I don’t wish to get bored.”
“Okay.” Nora went to the refrigerator and took out the marinated chicken and placed it on the counter. “I bought it yesterday,” she said.
“Did you have any relationship before this?” Demitri asked. He felt talking about these basic things might help him know her better.
“No. This is my first relationship,” Nora replied. “I was in no position to date anyone. My family’s situation wasn’t great, so I needed to work since I entered college,” she asserted.
“What happened with your family? Don’t tell me if you feel uncomfortable,” Demitri said as he watched her cutting the slices of the marinated chicken.
“My mom left me when I was two or three. I don’t remember her face,” Nora replied. “My father raised me up but after he was laid off from his job, things took a wrong turn. He started drinking heavily, and accumulated a lot of debts on his head,” she explained to him.
“Did you pay them all by yourself?” Demitri asked, his heart sinking upon learning all those things.
“I had to, else they would killed my father,” Nora answered.
“Where’s your dad?”
Nora’s hand stopped for a moment. “He passed away six months ago. It was multiple organ failure,” she pronounced as tears engulfed in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Nora,” Demitri whispered.
“No, it’s fine. I think he got a relief from his pain,” Nora said. “The only regret I had that he didn’t see me as his daughter anymore after he got addicted to alcohol. I wish I could have helped my dad,” she murmured with a thoughtful expression.
Demitri studied her for a moment. “Well, you did a lot for him. And I am sure he was always proud of you. Because of his addiction, he could never say those words to you. But you were a great daughter to him,” he asserted and placed his hand on her shoulder. “Nora, you are a strong lady. My grandmother always praises you. You don’t know how much she likes you. She thinks it’s difficult to find a daughter like you.”
Nora smiled as she felt better to hear such words.
“Your grandmother is a sweet lady,” Nora said. She put the pan on the stove and poured oil in it.
“What about you? I know you were in a relationship,” Nora said.
“It didn’t go well. I think I told you that my ex wasn’t happy that I worked late nights and didn’t give her enough time,” Demitri said.

“Was that the only reason of the breakup?” Nora asked.
“Yeah,” Demitri replied. He didn’t tell her how he got cheated on because he felt he was at fault.
“Is that why are you switching your job to the day shift?” Nora asked.
“Kind of. But I want to explore something new as I told you,” Demitri answered.
“I don’t care if you work day or night. Your happiness matters the most,” Nora pronounced.
“Why do I feel we go long way together?” Demitri remarked.
Nora smiled. “Let’s see. By the way, are you wearing lenses these days?” she asked.
“Yeah. Why?”
“Umm.. You look better with glasses,” Nora said. “I saw you in the glasses first time I saw you.”
“I’ll wear the glasses then,” Demitri replied. The phone in his pocket buzzed and he took it out. It was Lucius and he excused himself. Coming to the living area, he brought the phone to his ear.
“Demitri, we have tracked those loansharks. Tell your friend not to be scared anymore. They won’t ever bother her. Also, they take more than expected from her. If possible, tell Nora to see me on Monday in the office. I’ll return the amount,” he affirmed.
“Thank you, Lucius. That means a lot,” Demitri expressed his gratitude. “I will inform Nora. She will be happy to learn about it.”
“Hmm. Layla wishes to speak with you,” Lucius said and put the phone on the speaker.
“Demitri, hi. Sorry I was sleeping in the day. I wanted to invite you personally to the Christmas party. Do come to the house on the eve. And you can bring your friend to the party as well. We all will be having fun,” Layla said in her cheerful tone.
“Sure, Layla. Thank you for inviting me.”
“Then, I hang up.” Lucius said and the phone disconnected. Demitri pushed it back into his pocket and went back to the kitchen.
