Chapter 378: Everything was fake
“No. I don’t want you to stop,” Ivy said.
Roderick took a step ahead when the phone in Ivy’s sling bag, which was on the floor, began ringing.
“Ignore it,” Ivy said.
“Are you sure?” Roderick lifted the gaze from the bag to her.
“Yeah.” She swallowed with her heart pounding in her chest. “Let’s just go inside.”
Without another word, Roderick took her into the bedroom. The soft glow of the bedside lamp cast warm shadows across the room as he gently laid her down on the mattress.
Ivy propped herself up on her elbows, her fingers trembling as they reached for the buttons of his shirt. She had never imagined this moment with Roderick, never thought she would be the one unfastening his clothes with anticipation curling in her stomach.
A part of her questioned if this was right. If she was making a mistake. But her heart had never been so certain. She wanted to do it with him.
“Ivy, you’re nervous,” Roderick said. He grasped her hands gently, stopping her fingers at the fourth button of his shirt. “It’s not necessary to do this tonight,” he added, his gaze searching hers.
“Why? Don’t you desire me?” Her fingers trailed down his bare chest, lingering for a moment before she reached for the buttons again, determined to unfasten the remaining ones.
Roderick caught her hands once more in a firm grip. “You haven’t done this before, have you?”
“What? I had a boyfriend,” Ivy scoffed, trying to sound nonchalant. “Of course, I’ve done it.”
But it was a lie, a white lie she desperately wanted him to believe. She didn’t want him to think she was inexperienced or, worse, to laugh at the idea of her loving someone but never crossing that line.
Roderick studied her intently. “Don’t lie to me,” he said. “Do you really think I wouldn’t catch it?” He ran a hand through his tousled hair, exhaling. “What’s with the rush, Ivy? If you’re doing this just because I asked earlier, then don’t. That’s not what I want.”
He stepped back from the bed. “We should sleep. Tomorrow, we need to return.” Without waiting for a response, he turned and headed toward the bathroom, shutting the door behind him.
Ivy sat frozen, her hands resting on the sheets where he had been. ‘How did he find out?’ she wondered, biting her lip. ‘But I was so sure…’
Doubt crept in, twisting inside her chest. ‘Maybe Roderick doesn’t find me attractive enough.’
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she changed into her nightclothes and slipped under the duvet. The warmth of the blankets did little to ease the restless thoughts swirling in her mind, but exhaustion finally won over, and she drifted into a deep slumber.
Roderick turned off the shower tap, letting the last droplets of water drip from his body before running a hand over his face. Stepping out, he grabbed a towel, drying himself quickly before slipping into a bathrobe.
As he walked back into the room, his gaze fell on Ivy. She was curled up beneath the duvet in a peaceful sleep. A small, involuntary smile tugged at his lips before he exhaled and turned away.
His eyes flickered to the scattered clothing on the floor. With a quiet sigh, he picked up the garments, folding them loosely before placing them on the couch. Once everything was in order, he poured himself a glass of wine.
Taking a slow sip, he leaned back against the couch, savoring the warmth that spread down his throat. Just as he let himself relax, the buzz of a phone interrupted the silence.
His brows knitted together. Reaching for his long coat draped over the armrest, he slipped his hand into the pocket and pulled out his phone.
The screen displayed an unknown number.
Frowning, he answered. “Who is this?”
A familiar voice came through the speaker, smooth yet unmistakably smug. “It’s me, Roderick. Did you recognize me?”
Roderick’s grip on the phone tightened. “Kylie?” His expression darkened.
“Yep,” she responded with a light chuckle. “It’s been a long time since we last talked.”
His jaw clenched. “What do you want?”
“Straight to the point as always,” Kylie mused. “I’m inviting you to a Christmas party. It’s in two days, and a lot of our old college friends will be there. I’d appreciate it if you came. Oh, and of course, you should bring your girlfriend too.”

Roderick scoffed, rolling his eyes. “I’ll pass. I have no interest in your ridiculous parties, nor do I have the time for them.”
A moment of silence stretched between them before Kylie let out a soft laugh. “Still as cold as ever, I see.”
Roderick didn’t bother responding. Without another word, he ended the call and tossed the phone onto the table.
“Fucking Bastard,” Kylie cursed at the phone.
“Whom are you cursing?” asked Orabela as she came out of the kitchen with a two plates in her hands. They had pudding in them.
“Roderick. That fucking player was acting like a mighty guy on the phone,” Kylie said.
“Why did you call him?” Orabela asked, resting on the couch and placing the tiny plates on the table.
“I thought to invite him to the christmas party,” Kylie replied and sat down next to her. “Orabela, I’m glad you again made up with me. By the way, you have changed. You are no longer the old Bella I knew,” she asserted and picked up the plate. She began eating the pudding while Orabela lost in her own thoughts.
“Because I realized that everything was fake for me. My existence was questionable. I was born out of an affair,” Orabela murmured.
“It wasn’t your fault. But Layla’s fate truly changed in a single day. Now, she’s the chairwoman. Sometimes, I can’t believe the girl who used to so weak is now leading such a big company,” Kylie said. “But it’s not your fault, Bella. Ignore her and enjoy this pudding. Your are also growing on your pace.”
