Chapter 393: I adore kids now?
“Who told you all about this?” Lucius asked, his gaze shifting between them.

“Take a guess, Boss,” Roger responded with an eager grin.

Lucius exhaled sharply, thinking for a moment. “Was it Roderick?”

“No,” Aiden interjected smoothly. “It was your father.”

Before Lucius could react, Roger stepped forward, crossing his arms. “Boss, why didn’t you tell us? Aren’t we your family?” he demanded, feigning offense. “If there was anyone eagerly waiting for this good news, it was me!”

Before Lucius could respond, Layla spoke up. “Because I told Lucius we should keep it quiet for a while. Besides, we planned to tell you all today at the office. To the rest, it was meant to be revealed on Christmas.”

Lucius turned his attention back to Roger, narrowing his eyes. “And why, exactly, were you so eager for this news?”

Roger puffed out his chest, grinning mischievously. “Boss, just imagine—telling your future kids that I’m their uncle! It’ll be fun. And let’s be honest, you never liked kids, so this new chapter is bound to change you.”

Layla snapped her head toward Lucius, her brows furrowing. “You don’t like kids!?”

Lucius instantly shook his head. “Don’t listen to him.”

But Luca wasn’t about to let him off so easily. With a smirk, he added, “Still, shouldn’t you explain to your wife why you supposedly ‘didn’t like’ kids?”

Lucius turned his gaze toward Layla, a warm smile curving his lips. “I do like them,” he clarified. “Before marriage, I wasn’t particularly fond of them, that’s all.” He shot Roger a brief, warning glare before adding, “Roger, why don’t you tell Layla just how much I adore kids now?”

Roger chuckled, sensing the underlying threat in Lucius’s tone. “Oh, absolutely, Boss. You’re practically a saint around them.”

Layla recalled how once Lucius and she had to babysit a boy. He was throwing tantrums about it. But he had a lot of fun with the boy.

“We all should have breakfast,” Lucius told them.

“But all of us had our breakfasts,” Zayne replied. “We decided to come here to surprise you both. We are happy for you both. Layla, take care of yourself. It’s the beginning of motherhood and you need to navigate a lot,” he said warmly.

“Hmm.” Layla nodded her head. “You are right,” she said and glanced at Luca.

“I’ve to go early today,” Zayne said. He hugged Lucius once again followed by Layla before leaving.

“Boss, we will wait for you and Madam outside,” Roger opined, leaving with Aiden.

“We should also get going,” Luca said, gently patting Layla’s head. “Congratulations again, Layla. Take care, and don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything.”

Layla smiled. “Make sure to come for Christmas this year. You have to be here and celebrate with us.” Though she had already invited him over the phone, she wanted to remind him again in person.

“Of course!” Luca assured her. He then turned to Lucius, pulling him into a brief hug. “Stay strong, always,” he said firmly. “Your responsibilities have doubled now, but I have no doubt you’ll fulfill them well.”

“So, the biggest happiness has finally entered your lives. I am so glad for both of you,” Demitri told them.

“Thanks, Demitri.”

Lucius missed Antoine and Matteo on this occasion. But he knew they were with him, watching him and Layla grow together.

“I’ll see you later,” Demitri said.

“Sure.”

Demitri waved at them and walked away. Now, there was again a silence in the living room.

“Shall we go to the dining table?” Layla asked.

“Yes,” Lucius replied.

Luca pressed the foot on the brake and halted the car in front of the headquarters and stepped out. Stepping inside the giant glass doors, he entered the building.

He pressed the elevator button before sliding his hand back into his pocket. As the display above flickered, marking the floors ascending one by one, he waited in silence.

A soft chime echoed through the space.

“Ding!”

The elevator doors slid open, and Luca stepped out, his sharp gaze scanning the corridor ahead. He made his way toward the Chief’s office.

Pushing the doors open, Luca walked in and saw the Chief talking with someone on the phone.

Upon seeing Luca, the chief ended the call.

“Why did you suddenly summon me, Selene?” asked Luca.

“I was on a few days off and you handed over your resignation, Luca. I didn’t expect this from you,” Selene stated and took the seat on the leather chair. She showed him the envelope in which his resignation letter was present.

“Also, Tsar broke the prison. The CCTVs didn’t record anything. Not to mention, a strange news has fallen in my ears. Tsar and Vladimir Romanov were found dead in their home in Russia,” Selene pronounced, her skeptical gaze remained focus on Luca.

“Tell me, why did you take away Tsar from our custody?” Selene asked, her expressions turning into a serious one.

“What made you think that I took away Tsar?” Luca questioned and pulled out the chair around the desk. He sat on it, and continued, “I am no longer interested in working as an undercover agent, Selene. You know well why I joined this in the first place.”

“You’ve not answered me what I wanted to know,” Selene said, raising her brow.

“I answered you, Selene,” Luca replied. “Since you have nothing more to say to me, I must leave.”

“Let’s meet outside the office hours. Are you free in the evening?” Selene questioned.

“No, I am not,” Luca replied and stood up from the chair. “Goodbye, Selene.” As he turned around to leave, she stopped him.

“Can’t we be together?” Selene asked him. In the past, almost three years ago, they were dating. But because of certain issues, they both broke up with each other.

Luca didn’t look at her. “No, Selene. I don’t think we will go along well with each other,” he truthfully said and walked out of the office. A sigh escaped his mouth, but he didn’t look back and left.
