Chapter 395: To lean on the others
Layla drank the water and placed the glass on the table before picking up the pen. Opening the file in the black folder, she keenly read the contents inside before putting the signature on it.

She didn’t realize Lucius had entered the office as his steps were quiet.

“Ahh!” Layla screamed when she felt two hands on her shoulders and tilted her head up.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you,” Lucius said.

“When did you come?” Layla inquired, rubbing her chest.

“Just a moment ago,” Lucius replied. “You were so engrossed in the file that you didn’t notice,” he added.

“Is your work finished?” Layla questioned.

“Yeah. I’ll sit quietly there and let you finish yours,” Lucius assured her. “Or if you want to help me, then I can.”

Layla shook her head. “Just sit there,” she stated.

Lucius leaned down and kissed her cheek, making her smile before heading to the office sofa. He picked up the magazine and wondered if Layla considered giving the interview to the news agency which had been approaching her for a while.

‘I will ask her once she finishes the work,’ Lucius thought.

While reading the business magazine, his eyelids turned heavy. He rubbed his eyes, not wanting to sleep. However, it couldn’t be controlled for long and he ended up falling asleep on the couch. The main reason behind it was that he couldn’t asleep well last night, so his body needed rest.

Lucius woke up from the nap, but found his head was rested on something soft. Tilting his head, he found Layla next to him with the magazine in her hand.

“Why didn’t you wake me up? How long did I sleep?” Lucius asked.

“Twenty minutes,” Layla replied, looking at him. “I thought to let you sleep. I know you have trouble in sleeping. And your insomnia relapses. It’s just you don’t tell me.” She sounded like she was complaining to Lucius for still not able to recover from the traumas.

“That’s not true,” Lucius said. “You worry too much,” he added. “Has your work finished?” he asked.

“Yes,” Layla replied.

“Aiden mentioned once that some agencies want your interview. Did you decide to give one?” Lucius asked.

“No. I feel it’s not the right time,” Layla replied.

“Why? You are the chairwoman. Many ladies out there want to be inspired from you,” Lucius stated.

She smiled at the way he complimented her. “But I think I’ve not done anything inspiring. I got lucky in love and found a husband, who supported my dream and ambition.”

“I think surviving in your own toxic family and keep the humanity in your heart alive is something not anyone can do. And you have inspired me too, Layla,” Lucius stated.

“How?” She was eager to know.

“Umm… You became my strength when I was at the weakest phase of my life. I was unable to see the path ahead of me. It was the most difficult moment for me. You taught me to stay clear-headed and not to forget the people who are always there to help you. You taught me it wasn’t wrong to lean on the others,” Lucius explained.

Layla understood he referred to the incident, where he almost going to leave her and the others. “I think as a couple we both have inspired each others in many ways. About the interview, I may be willing to give in the future, but at the moment,” she stated and held his hand between hers.

“Let’s go home then. I want you to cook something for me in the lunch,” she expressed her wish.

“Let’s go home then,” Lucius stood up while pulling me up too.

“Did you see the Christmas decorations on the first floor?” Layla asked with holiday spirit. “By the way, I was thinking of giving our employees a generous Christmas bonus this year. But I wanted to discuss it with you and Father first.”

Lucius leaned back in his chair, considering her words. “The company is yours, Layla. Do whatever you think is right. I’m sure Dad would say the same. Besides, we’ve had a great year financially, and our hardworking employees deserve to be rewarded,” he said, fully supporting her idea.

Layla nodded thoughtfully. “Still, I should run it by Father once,” she murmured.

She walked over to the desk, reaching for her long coat from the hanger stand. Lucius picked up her purse, slipping her phone inside before handing it to her.

As she draped the coat over her shoulders, Lucius noticed the collar was folded the wrong way. Without thinking, he reached out and smoothed it down for her. Layla smiled, a soft glint in her eyes, before slipping her arm through mine.

“Let’s go then, husband,” Layla said affectionately as they stepped out of the office together.

“Aiden, go home early. The files are all signed. You can return them to the respective departments,” she instructed.

“Sure,” Aiden replied with a nod.

Lucius gave him a brief wave before he and Layla made their way to the VIP elevator. As the doors slid shut behind them, the enclosed space filled with a comfortable silence, until Layla suddenly leaned in and pressed her lips against his.

Lucius stiffened for a moment, caught off guard by her unexpected boldness, but he quickly recovered. His hands instinctively found the curve of her back, pulling her closer as he deepened the kiss.

When they finally parted, his breath was warm against her lips as he murmured, “What’s gotten into you?” His voice was laced with both amusement and curiosity.

Instead of answering, Layla simply smiled. Lucius exhaled a low chuckle, brushing his lips over her jaw before burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, familiar fragrance of her perfume.

They stepped away from each other as the elevator reached at the first floor. Holding each other’s hands they exited the elevator and stopped slowly by the giant, decorative Christmas tree on the floor.

“By the way, Demitri is in a relationship,” Lucius suddenly revealed to Layla.

“What? Really?” She was astonished to learn it.

“Look at the receptionist desk. The lady there is his girlfriend. Her name is Nora,” Lucius whispered close to Layla’s ear.

“Ohh. That’s interesting,” Layla replied. “May they both go long way with each other,” she prayed.

“Layla!”

The two of them stopped upon hearing a familiar voice.

“Ruby!” Layla exclaimed in surprise.
