Chapter 396: Keep holding onto me
“Why do you want to see Layla now?” David asked as he drove. “You could have invited her home instead of going all the way to her company.”

“Stop complaining, David,” Ruby said, crossing her arms. “If you don’t want to take me there, you can drop me off right here.” She glared at her fiancé before adding, “I know you and Lucius don’t get along, but that doesn’t mean you can stop me from visiting Layla at her workplace.”

David sighed, gripping the steering wheel tighter. “Ruby, that’s not what I meant. You know what kind of man Lucius is. It’s better to stay away from him.”

“You can’t badmouth my best friend’s husband in front of me,” Ruby pouted, turning her head away.

“Alright, alright. I’ll keep my mouth shut,” David relented, shaking his head as he continued driving.

A few minutes later, they pulled up in front of the towering glass skyscraper of the De Salvo Group. Before David could say another word, Ruby leaned over, gave him a quick peck on the cheek, and hopped out of the car.

“Ruby, slow down!” David called after her, but she was already dashing toward the grand rotating doors, her pointed heels clicking against the pavement. With a resigned sigh, David stepped out of the car but chose to stay outside, knowing that going in wouldn’t be the best idea.

As Ruby entered the building, a few heads turned in her direction, but her gaze was already locked onto a familiar figure—Layla, walking alongside Lucius.

“Layla!” she called out excitedly.

“Ruby!”

Without hesitation, the two women ran toward each other, completely oblivious to their surroundings. Layla, in her excitement, nearly forgot that she was in her own company.

“Slow down, Layla. You’ll trip,” Lucius warned, his voice laced with concern.

Ignoring him, Layla met Ruby halfway, and they embraced tightly. As the whispers and curious gazes of onlookers reached her ears, Layla sighed.

“They must think I’ve lost my mind,” she murmured. “Let’s go outside.”

She turned to check on Lucius, who was already following them. Once they stepped out of the building, Ruby grinned and lowered her voice.

“Layla, congratulations on getting pregnant. I’m going to be an aunt!” she beamed. The moment she had received the news from Layla’s message, she couldn’t stop herself from rushing over.

“Thank you,” Layla replied with a warm smile.

“Let’s grab something together. Why don’t you come over to my apartment? I’m sure Lucius won’t mind. In fact, he should come too. You’ve never visited me since you got married, Layla,” Ruby complained.

“Well, I never wanted to bother you after you said you had a lot going on in your life,” Layla muttered. “And then, a lot happened in my life too.”

“That’s true!” Ruby agreed with a nod.

Their eyes drifted to their men, who stood a few feet apart, neither making an effort to acknowledge the other.

“Looks like our men need to get closer too,” Ruby remarked with a playful smirk.

Layla chuckled. “Yeah, you’re right! Let’s go to your place, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course, I don’t mind!” Ruby said enthusiastically. “Let’s go to my house. Layla and I have a lot to catch up on!” She turned to glance at Lucius and then at David.

Lucius gave a small nod. “I have no problem with that. Layla misses you a lot, after all.”

Ruby then looked at David expectantly. “David, you’re coming too, right? We can have lunch together.”

“Sure,” David replied.

“And don’t try to sneak out in the middle with the excuse of an emergency meeting,” Ruby warned, narrowing her eyes at him.

David let out a small chuckle. “I won’t,” he assured her. Then, turning serious, he added, “Get in the car. Layla and Lucius can follow us in their own car.”

“That sounds better,” Lucius agreed. He glanced at the security guard, who quickly stepped forward to take the car keys from him before hurrying off to retrieve the vehicle.

Ruby and David got into their car while Lucius and Layla waited for theirs to be brought around. A moment later, the security guard pulled up in front of them.

“Thank you,” Lucius said as he took the keys, offering the man a curt nod of appreciation. The guard smiled politely before returning to his post.

As David drove off, Lucius started the engine, pressing his foot on the accelerator and smoothly steering the car onto the road, following behind them.

As David was focused on his driving, Ruby said, “Lucius isn’t a bad guy. If he were, Layla would have never been happy with him and had left him long time ago.”

“Well, Lucius is a mafia. Don’t forget that,” David said.

“I don’t care. Also, Layla told me that Lucius became mafia for a reason. If Layla has a faith in her husband, I am no one to judge him. The same goes for you, David,” Ruby stated and took a brief pause.

“You know Layla suffered a lot since her childhood. The marriage with Lucius changed a lot in her. She even became the chairwoman when her jerk ex was destined to come to that position. Lucius has his own matters and past, which we both are unaware of. But I know that he never did anything to hurt my friend. That’s why she’s with him without any doubts. So, you need to be an understanding guy, without any prejudices, to know Lucius more. I know you always wanted to do business with him. Maybe this new chapter can open a way for that,” she pronounced with a smile.

“Because you are saying this, then I may try knowing Lucius in a much better way,” David assured her.

Ruby smiled and thanked him for being an understanding guy. “Sometimes I wonder if you don’t get annoyed with me. I throw tantrums on you and even irritate you. Yet, you keep holding onto me,” she remarked.

“Because I love you, Ruby. I like the way you are. You don’t hide your true self,” David asserted.

“I love you too, David,” Ruby said in her soft tone.
