Chapter 45: Allowed to kiss you
“Big brother, what have you made?” The young girl asked while the young boy started laughing.
Lucius chuckled at the children’s enthusiasm, holding back a laugh as the young boy teased him.
“Big brother doesn’t know how to make a castle,” the boy giggled.
Lucius leaned back, trying to defend his creation. “Hey! That’s a barrack. You kids don’t even know anything,” he replied with a playful smirk, proud of his “barrack.”
The young girl tilted her head, her brows furrowing. “A barrack? But why? We need a castle where a princess lives, then her prince will come to save her,” she explained, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Before Lucius could respond, the young boy piped up, full of energy. “No! It’s a castle for a prince, who fights dragons!” he exclaimed, his eyes wide with excitement.
Lucius raised an eyebrow at the boy’s declaration. “A prince fighting dragons, huh? That sounds more like my kind of story,” he said, smiling down at the boy, who nodded eagerly.
Layla, watching the playful exchange, couldn’t stop herself from laughing softly. “Why don’t we make both? A castle for the princess and a barrack for the prince to fight his dragons,” she suggested, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Oh that’s a lovely idea!” Both the girl and boy said together.
“So, I’m that prince and this young lady is the princess,” Lucius said.
“But I want to be the prince,” the boy said.
“You can’t be the prince. You aren’t tall enough,” Lucius remarked.
“But Mama says I’m a big boy.”
“Your mother has lied to you,” Lucius stated.
The boy’s expressions turned gloomy to hear that.
Layla lightly hit Lucius’s arm. “Don’t tease the kids. He is a prince while you are his knight. And you won’t argue,” she pronounced and looked at the boy with a loving gaze. “Don’t be upset, Baby. This Big Uncle loves to tease people,” she said, narrowly gazing at Lucius.
“Whom are you calling uncle? I’m your husband… The Prince!” Lucius loudly said, bringing some of the eyes on them.
“Yes, you are but the kids are here. Let them be prince and princess. We are elders,” Layla said in a low voice near his ear. She got busy with the kids and soon, completed the castle with them. The kids were overjoyed to see that. Just then, their parents called for them when their father come to pick them up.
“Oh, we have to go. It was fun, Big Sister.” The girl said and waved at her.
The boy also said the same, and hugged Layla. “I wish you had lived near our house. Then, we would have played together daily.” There was a spark in his eyes.
“Neil, don’t trouble them. Come here,” the kids father said and apologized to both Layla and Lucius for the troubles his kids gave.
“It wasn’t a trouble at all,” Layla said and pinched the boy’s cheek.
Before leaving, the boy planted a kiss on Layla’s cheek and ran along with his father while carrying the tiny bucket.
“Hey! That’s my wife. You can’t kiss her,” Lucius said, but not in a loud voice.
Layla laughed softly at Lucius’s playful jealousy. “He’s just a kid, Lucius. Let him have his innocent moment,” she teased, nudging him lightly with her shoulder.
Lucius grumbled, though a smile tugged at his lips. “Doesn’t matter. I’m still the only one allowed to kiss you,” he muttered under his breath, pulling her a little closer.
Layla glanced at the ocean, the waves gently rolling in, and then back at Lucius. “It’s not that I don’t trust you,” she said softly, “I just have this fear, you know?”
Lucius took her hand in his, his grip gentle but reassuring. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Layla. We’ll just go where the water touches our feet, nothing more,” he promised.
Layla hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Alright, just for a little while.”

They walked toward the shoreline together, Lucius staying close by her side, his presence grounding her. When the first wave touched her feet, Layla tensed, but Lucius tightened his hold, silently reminding her that he was there.
“See? It’s not so bad,” Lucius said, smiling at her.
Layla exhaled, the cool water feeling refreshing against her skin. “Okay, maybe it’s not,” she admitted, her fear slowly dissipating as they stood together by the ocean, watching the waves retreat and return. The gentle rhythm of the sea, combined with Lucius’s steady presence, made her feel safe.
She moved a bit ahead while keeping a tight hold on Lucius. More waves crashed their feet.
“Do you want to go deeper?” Lucius asked, his voice low and teasing.
“I… I think so, but…” Layla hesitated, uncertain if she was truly ready.
Sensing her apprehension, Lucius smiled softly, slipping off his jacket. “Give me your phone,” he requested. Confused but trusting him, Layla handed it over. Lucius jogged up to a patch of drier sand beyond the reach of the waves. He tucked his wallet and their phones into the jacket’s inner pockets, ensuring their safety before sprinting back to her.
“We’re going to feel the ocean today, trust me,” he said, extending his hands toward her. She placed her hands in his, feeling the firmness of his grip as he gently led her into the water. “Just keep your eyes on me. You’ll be fine,” he reassured her with a warm gaze.
Layla’s fingers curled tightly around his as they ventured further, the cool ocean water lapping at their legs. Lucius kept her close, his arms wrapping protectively around her waist.
He avoided the deeper areas, knowing her fear of the open water. When a small wave suddenly rose and splashed over them, submerging them for a brief moment, Lucius instantly pulled them back up, keeping her steady.
“Ah!” Layla gasped, her heart racing as she clung to him, her arms instinctively circling his neck.
But as she looked into his eyes and felt his reassuring presence, her tension began to ease.
Slowly, her body relaxed in his embrace, the fear melting away as they floated together, surrounded by the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean.
“I feel like I’m floating,” Layla murmured, a soft smile playing on her lips.
Lucius chuckled quietly. “You are,” he whispered. He lifted a hand to her neck, cradling it gently. Their gazes locked, lingering on each other’s faces before slowly drifting to their lips. Yet, this time, he didn’t move closer.
Layla’s breath hitched as she felt the warmth of his breath, so close yet still teasingly distant. She bit her bottom lip, nerves and anticipation fluttering in her chest. Finally, she closed her eyes, leaning forward to press her lips to his in a soft kiss.
