Chapter 47: A low groan
In the evening, Layla slipped into the white dress Lucius had chosen for her—a knee-length, sleeveless gown with a delicate bow at the back. She smoothed her hands over the soft fabric, admiring the way it clung to her figure.
“It really is beautiful,” she murmured to herself, catching her reflection in the mirror.
After brushing her hair one last time, Layla stepped into her heels and left the room, her heart fluttering as she approached where Lucius was waiting.
He stood with his back to her, dressed impeccably in a blue t-shirt with a white trousers.
There was something about the way he carried himself—his confident posture, the quiet power he exuded—that always made Layla’s pulse quicken.
For a moment, she simply stood there, admiring him in silence, feeling a familiar warmth stir in her chest. Her gaze lingered on the strong lines of his back, and before she knew it, her feet were moving.
Without thinking, she slipped her arms around him from behind, pressing her cheek against his broad shoulders.
Lucius immediately stopped mid-conversation, gently lowering his phone and ending the call. “Layla,” he said softly. The warmth in his tone made her heart melt, and she clung to him a little tighter.
“Why are you hugging me like this?” Lucius mused, tilting his head over his shoulder.
Layla was quick to pull away and tucked her hair behind the ear. “I was just… Checking how strong your back is,” she replied.
Her response made Lucius laugh. “And for what you were checking my back?” He took a step close to her, his calloused fingers lifted her chin up in a smooth motion, thus locking their gazes.
Words failed Layla for a moment, her mind blank as she held him tighter. Finally, she found her voice. “I just wanted to hug you.”
Lucius let out a soft chuckle, amusement flickering in his eyes. “Hmm. Then give me more hugs like this from now on. You will, right?”
Layla nodded, her cheeks warming. “Yes,” she whispered.
Lucius, his hand trailing back to hers, turned to face her fully, his gaze sweeping over her. She looked breathtaking—more than he had imagined in that dress.
He could feel the temptation to lose control, but he pushed it down, reminding himself of the plan he had made. ‘Control yourself, Lucius. You can’t just pull her into your arms and kiss her senseless. Not yet. Focus on what you’ve prepared for her.’
With a firm but gentle grip, Lucius took her hand, leading her outside. Layla clutched her bag tightly, curiosity dancing in her eyes. Something about this evening felt different, special. Unable to hold back, she asked, “Where are we going? This doesn’t feel like a normal dinner.”
Lucius glanced at her with a soft smile but didn’t reveal anything. “Just wait a little longer.”
Layla’s breath caught in her throat as she saw the sight unveiled finally. It was just two minutes away from the beachhouse. Before her was a secluded section of the beach, where a heart-shaped area had been marked on the sand, glowing softly under the twinkling rice lights strung overhead.
A cozy blanket and cushions lay in the center, beside a small bonfire crackling warmly. The rhythmic sound of the waves lapping at the shore completed the serene scene.
Layla’s heart swelled at the sight, since it the most unexpected and heart-fluttering moment she had ever experienced.
Running there, she quickly removed her heels and she lay down while looking at the night sky, filled with thousands of twinkling stars.
“Hey, sit up. We have yet to take the dinner,” Lucius said.
She sat up, her legs folded neatly to one side. The soft glow of the evening light bathed the room as a man entered, carefully balancing a large tray. At Lucius’s nod, the man placed the dishes on the small sitting table and quietly disappeared.
“Let’s have dinner first,” Lucius said, his voice calm but full of anticipation.
Layla didn’t waste a moment, eagerly diving into the meal. She savored each bite of the smoked salmon, her taste buds delighted by its rich flavor. Lucius poured her a glass of wine, but he stopped her when she attempted to pour more. “That’s enough for tonight,” he teased gently. “I want you clear-headed.”
Once they finished the meal, Lucius motioned for the man to clear the dishes, leaving the two of them alone on the secluded beach, the gentle crash of waves filling the space around them.
Layla’s gaze drifted upward to the vast sky. “We can’t see the Aurora from here,” she said softly, her hands resting by her sides, her thoughts distant.
“Maybe we’ll be lucky and catch it later,” Lucius murmured, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His soft touch sent a shiver down her spine.

She tilted her head slightly, finding herself face to face with him, their breaths mingling in the cool night air. “Lucius… I love being here with you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Thank you for this.”
“I’m glad,” he replied, his eyes never leaving hers. “You look beautiful in that dress. Thank you for wearing it.”
Layla smiled shyly, her gaze dropping to his muscular arms, veins tracing a path along his skin. “You look amazing too,” she admitted, her voice quieter now. For a moment, she hesitated, unsure, but then her hand moved, her fingers lightly brushing over his hand before trailing up his arm, feeling the strength beneath her touch.
“Layla,” he whispered, his voice hoarse with emotion.
“Hm?” She looked up, only to be met with the sudden warmth of his lips against hers. The kiss was swift, passionate, taking her breath away. She barely had time to react before he pulled back just enough to meet her eyes. “Be mine,” he whispered, his voice filled with love and a deep desire.
“I’m already yours, Lucius. I’m your wife,” she confessed softly. She knew her hesitation had always bothered him, but tonight, she let her heart speak freely, surrendering to the moment.
Before Lucius could respond, Layla leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to his lips. The kiss lingered for more than a second before she gently parted her lips, teasingly nibbling on his.
A low groan escaped Lucius, his desire evident in the sound. In one swift motion, he lifted her effortlessly, settling her on his lap. His hands found the warmth of her bare back, tracing slow, deliberate paths along her skin, sending tingles in her body.
His nose nuzzled hers and he ducked his head in the hollow of her neck. She was aware what this could lead to, but she wanted it.
