Chapter 54: The Real Daughter
“You can go in,” the guard said to Seraphina. She walked inside, her heels clicking softly against the stone path, while the guard led her to the drawing room.
As she entered, she saw Lucius seated comfortably on the sofa, his posture was relaxed but his gaze carried a sharpness.
Before Seraphina could settle into a chair, Lucius’s voice cut through the silence. “I never asked you to sit.”
Seraphina stiffened, her brows knitting together. “I’m your mother-in-law. At least show some respect,” she responded in a firm tone.
Lucius chuckled lightly with an unsettling sound. Roger stood nearby, watching the exchange carefully.
“My house, my rules,” Lucius said, his eyes narrowing. “And let me make something clear—don’t come here looking for Layla. She has nothing to do with you. Why are you pushing me to make your old age the worst days of your life?” His voice was cold, and the weight of his words hung in the air. “If you truly want to make amends, maybe you should start by standing up for Layla. It gives me a headache just thinking about how poorly she’s been treated by her own mother.”
He lowered his head slightly, his fingers tracing the rim of his wedding ring, a dark smile playing on his lips. “I can’t help but wonder,” he murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, “are you her real mother, or just pretending to be?”
The quiet menace in his tone made the question hang ominously in the air, as if he already suspected the answer.
Seraphina widened her eyes, her breath was caught in her throat while the beads of cold sweat appeared on her temples.
“How could you say that?” Seraphina tried to keep her voice straight.
“We will see that soon. It’s okay if you don’t wish to admit the truth now. Because once I got my hands on the truth, it is an end for you,” Lucius said with a smirk.
“Layla is my daughter. Because I treated her badly that doesn’t mean I never cared for her. Lucius, my status in the Rosenzweig Family was never defined. I don’t know what Layla told you. Just call her here. I would like to talk to my daughter and apologize to her. Please, Lucius,” Seraphina pleaded, joining her hands together. Tears brimmed in her eyes because she could feel her entire life ending before her.
“Layla is sleeping at the moment. I can’t disturb her for such a pathetic apology. You can leave and think how you shouldn’t be caught,” Lucius said in a menacing tone.
Seraphina’s heart thundered against her chest. She swallowed the hard lump formed in her throat and wiped the tears quickly from her eyes. Walking away with slow steps, she tried to keep her composure.
Once she was out of Lucius’s sight, Roger asked, “Boss, do you suspect that Lady Seraphina isn’t Madam Layla’s mother?”
“Yep. Layla’s and Orabela’s birth dates are same. Who know they are switched at the time of the birth? So, now, let’s go for the DNA test. You know what you’ve to do, Roger. Don’t disappoint me,” Lucius pronounced.
“Yes, Boss,” Roger said and left the drawing room.
“Layla Rosenzweig is the real daughter. How interesting!” Lucius muttered with a smile.

Seraphina drove back home in a frenzy, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly as panic surged through her. Her mind raced with thoughts of Lucius and the cold threat he had made.
She had thought meeting Layla would somehow fix everything, but instead, the entire situation had spiraled out of control. Her headache pounded fiercely as fear clawed at her.
In just a few short weeks, her once stable life was crumbling before her eyes. The mere thought of Lucius uncovering the truth made her blood run cold.
“If he finds out the truth, it will be an end for me,” Seraphina muttered.
The moment she reached her bedroom, she slammed the door shut, leaning against it, her hand pressing against her aching head. “Why did I let Layla marry him?” she muttered, her voice cracking under the weight of regret. “I’ve never had to deal with this kind of trouble before, so why now?”
Frustration bubbled over her, and before she could stop herself, she let out a scream of anger and anguish. In her rage, she grabbed a vase from the nearby table and hurled it at the floor.
Seraphina paced back and forth in the room, biting her nails anxiously. Her mind raced, grasping for a solution. Just then, a name surfaced, and with trembling hands, she checked her phone. She didn’t want to take this step—it was extreme, even for her—but it was the only way to ensure the truth remained buried.
She dialed a number, her heart pounding. As the line connected, her voice dropped to a cold whisper. “I want you to do it. Soon. This person needs to disappear, permanently. Make sure they don’t survive,” she instructed, her eyes narrowing. “You’ll receive the first payment by this evening. I’ve sent the picture of the target—there’s no room for failure.”
As the call ended, Seraphina lowered the phone and a twisted smile spread across her face. “No one will ever find out the truth. I’ll make sure of it,” she muttered, her determination hardening into something sinister.
In her world, survival meant doing whatever it took. And Seraphina wasn’t about to let anyone to crumble her world.

Just then, Seraphina heard a soft knock on the door. “Mom Sera, are you alright? I heard a vase fall in your room,” Orabela called out, concern lacing her voice.
Seraphina quickly opened the door, forcing a smile. “Bella, the vase just slipped from my hand. I’m fine,” she reassured her, though the tension in her voice was palpable.
“But why do you have sweat on your forehead?” Orabela pressed, her brow furrowing as she noticed her mother’s disheveled appearance.
“It’s hot inside. I haven’t turned on the AC yet; that’s probably why,” Seraphina replied, brushing off the concern.
“I see.” Orabela turned to leave, but Seraphina called out to her, urgency creeping into her tone. “Did Rick agree to marry you?”
Orabela’s expression hardened. “We broke up. I think I should stay away from that family, especially since your daughter is involved. I don’t want to ruin my life because of Layla.” With that, she turned on her heel and walked away with a disappointing expression.
“Your life will never be ruined, Bella. I’ll make sure of that,” Seraphina declared, her voice steady as she watched her daughter leave.
She would do anything to protect Orabela and secure their future, even if it meant crossing dangerous lines.
