Chapter 57: To take your revenge
The next morning, as planned, Lucius and Layla made their way to the company where he held the position of Director.
“Lucius, I think it would be more appropriate to call you ‘Sir’ here, given the setting,” Layla remarked, glancing around the sleek office.
“I’d much prefer if you called me ‘Husband’,” Lucius teased with a mischievous grin. Nearby, Roger, his assistant, couldn’t help but smirk at this playful side of his usually composed boss.
“Roger, give us some privacy,” Lucius instructed, his voice firm yet calm. Roger swiftly exited the room, leaving them alone.
“Privacy? Why now?” Layla asked, her brows knitting in curiosity as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I thought you’d send me off with Roger to some department for the day.”
Lucius stepped closer, his presence immediately commanding the room. Without a word, he pulled a blindfold from his pocket. Layla’s breath caught in her throat as he gently placed it over her eyes, her vision fading into darkness. “Lucius, what are you doing?” she asked, tilting her head slightly, her voice a mix of surprise and anticipation.
“There’s a surprise waiting for you,” he murmured, his voice low and steady. His gaze lingered on her lips, the temptation to kiss her strong. But he held back, knowing that once he started, he wouldn’t be able to stop.
“A surprise? Here, at the office?” Layla asked, her tone both intrigued and skeptical.
“Yes,” he replied softly, turning her around and guiding her forward with careful hands. He ensured her steps were slow, his hands hovering protectively to make sure she didn’t stumble.
Finally, Lucius came to a stop and gently removed the blindfold from Layla’s eyes. As the fabric slipped away, she blinked, adjusting to the light. The first thing she noticed was the polished desk in front of her. On it, gleaming in gold letters, was a nameplate that read: Layla De Salvo, Personal Assistant.
She turned to Lucius, her eyes wide with shock. Before she could utter a word, he handed her an official ID card. Layla glanced down at the card and was taken aback once more—it bore her name, her photograph, and the company logo embossed at the top.
“How…?” she muttered. When did he manage to get that picture of her? It was a portrait she didn’t even recall posing for. But the question quickly faded as her gaze lingered on her name and new title. It felt surreal.
For months, Layla had toiled in her previous company as an intern, fighting for a position like this—an official title, a real sense of belonging, a place where her efforts would be acknowledged.
Layla’s mind raced back to the day she was thrown out of her last company. Orabela’s lies had spread like wildfire, ruining months of hard work in a single day. Everything she had built, every step forward, had been wiped away. She had never imagined she would get another chance, let alone a role as prestigious as this.
“But… but Roger is your secretary,” Layla stammered, still in shock.
Lucius gave a light chuckle, his eyes warm. “Only for important matters from now on.”
“I don’t want to take—” she began, but the rest of her sentence was silenced when Lucius gently pressed his finger against her lips, his touch soft but firm.
“Roger has been with me for years,” he assured her. “He doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s more of my bodyguard than a secretary at this point. But you, Layla… no one is more suited for this position than you.” His words were confident, unwavering, as if this had been the most obvious choice all along.
Lucius then hung the ID card around her neck with a delicate touch, stepping back to admire the sight. He reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone, and without missing a beat, he said, “Now, give me a big smile.”
But instead of smiling, Layla felt tears welling up in her eyes. Not from sadness or weakness, but from the overwhelming surge of emotions flooding her chest.
A man who had barely entered her life a few days ago was now offering her the very thing she had dreamed of—something she had fought for and struggled to achieve on her own for so long.
Memories of her father flashed in her mind, his cold rejection echoing through her thoughts. She had once asked him for even the simplest opportunity—a small assistant internship at his company. But he had refused, cruelly reminding her that she had no place in the business world and that her birth had been a mistake he never wanted.
The tears now flowed freely, not from the wounds of the past, but from the realization that someone—Lucius—saw her worth in ways her own family never had. He was opening doors she thought would remain forever closed.
Lucius, visibly shocked and a bit confused by her reaction, quickly stepped toward her, his hands gently cupping her face as he wiped the tears from her cheeks. His voice was soft but concerned. “You’re not supposed to cry. Did you not like the surprise?”
Layla shook her head, a small smile breaking through the tears. “No, I love it. I love it so much that I couldn’t stop myself from crying. Thank you, Lucius,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I’m forever grateful. I promise, I will never disappoint you with my work.”
Lucius’s gaze softened further, a look of understanding and certainty in his eyes. “I know you won’t,” he replied, his voice steady. He lowered his hands, taking hers in a firm but reassuring grip. “This isn’t just about the job, Layla. You have a long way to go, and you need to take your revenge. I’m just trying to help you get there.”
He then moved gracefully, pulling out the chair behind the desk for her. “Sit,” he said with a small smile, guiding her gently into her new seat. “Let’s begin the day.”

“You are staring at me for past one hour,” Layla said as she finally fully focused her attention to Lucius. She stood up from her chair, grabbing the file in her hand, and made her way over to his desk.

“Was I?” Lucius replied, feigning innocence as a slight smirk played on his lips.
“At this rate, you should move my desk outside. Otherwise, you’ll never get any work done,” she teased, raising an eyebrow.
He leaned back in his chair, his gaze drifting toward the file in her hand before meeting her eyes again. “I don’t have any work today, Wife,” he clarified, his voice carrying a hint of playful defiance.
“So, what’s that?” Lucius asked, nodding toward the file in Layla’s hand.
“Oh, right,” Layla replied, her tone brightening. “This is a proposal I’ve been working on to take the company to the next level. I think we should invest in renewable energy—specifically solar power. It’s the future. And two weeks ago, my dad mentioned a huge investment opportunity in a startup. Apparently, the government is actively searching for the best investor, and my dad stands to benefit a lot. But what if we got in on that first?” She handed him the file, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
“That sounds interesting,” Lucius said, intrigued. He opened the file and started reading.
As he scanned the pages, he couldn’t help but admire Layla’s creativity and her deep understanding of the subject. She wasn’t just intelligent—she had a natural insight that was truly impressive. How remarkable his wife was!
Layla wondered why he was smiling. To her surprise, Lucius signed at the end of the proposal, making her eyes grow big. “Let’s make an investment on this. On what day the investors will gather?” he queried.
“Um… Don’t you have to check anything? You just signed it,” Layla said with a surprising glance.
“I read too. The startup is out there for three years and has a good history. Their profits are growing exponentially every year. Rest, I trust you,” Lucius asserted.
“Thank you for the trust. It is scheduled after three days,” Layla informed him.
“Great!” Lucius stated as a plan already circulated in his head.
“You’ve a meeting scheduled in the afternoon with the CEO Ashton Petrova,” she reminded him before she turned to leave.
“Do you want a coffee?” Lucius stood up, his question kind of puzzled her.
“I am not a coffee lover. But I’ll have one with you,” she answered. “Should I make for my boss?”
“Sure.” He rested himself against the desk, his hands casually resting on its edges.
Within minutes, Layla brought two coffee mugs and handed one to him. “I was thinking if we can one day take over my father’s company,” Layla suddenly said.
Lucius took a sip before lowering the mug. “If you want it, I’ll make sure it happens.”
“Orabela holds a beauty line and I want to take over it first. All my life, she is the one who snatched things from me. I want her to see what it feels like to lose everything you own,” Layla pronounced.
“Do whatever you like. You aren’t a mere assistant here, but my counterpart. I won’t stop you from achieving your goals,” Lucius stated. “The coffee is good,” he added and again took a few more sips of it.
‘I won’t let you down, Lucius. You are the only person who trust me and I will stand up to your expectations,’ she vowed in her mind.
