Chapter 71: Let me enjoy
A few minutes ago,
Lucius received a call from Alekis, prompting him to excuse himself from the room. Before leaving, he gave a quiet instruction to Roger, “Keep an eye on Layla.”
Bringing the phone to his ear, Lucius tucked one hand into his pocket, his tone composed yet distant.
“Yes, Dad, we’re doing fine,” he responded.
“Good. I expect you and your wife to come home this weekend,” Alekis said, his voice carrying a sense of authority.
“Is there something specific you want to discuss?” Lucius asked, already sensing the weight behind his father’s request.
“Your nephew’s engagement. As his uncle, you have responsibilities that you tend to neglect,” Alekis reminded him firmly.
Lucius suppressed a sigh. “I thought you were already handling all of that, Dad. And Fiona—she’s not so old that she can’t manage her own son’s engagement,” he replied, his words edged with a touch of frustration.
It irked him that his father continued to bear the weight of responsibilities, but he knew well enough the affection Alekis had for his grandson, a bond that seemed to justify the older man’s persistent involvement in family matters.
“Lucius, you’re part of this family. With your brother absent, some duties fall to you,” Alekis stated firmly.
Lucius let out a soft sigh, his voice lowering in acknowledgment. “I understand, Dad. I’ll come home with Layla this weekend. Take care of yourself,” he said before the call ended. Lowering the phone from his ear, he made his way back to the lounge, only to be met with an unexpected sight—Layla was clearly drunk.
His gaze immediately landed on Roger, and he couldn’t hold back his irritation. “Didn’t I tell you to keep an eye on her?” he reprimanded sharply.
Roger, visibly startled, stood from his seat. “Boss, I was keeping watch. There’s been no suspicious activity,” he explained defensively.
Lucius clenched his jaw, the sound of Layla’s laughter and the employees’ cheers only heightening his frustration. He turned just in time to hear her announce loudly that she was about to show everyone her dance.
Without wasting a second, Lucius rushed down towards her, Roger following close behind, confused by the sudden commotion. As the staff continued to cheer Layla on, Lucius quickly wrapped his arms around her from behind.
“Lucius,” Layla murmured with a smile as she gazed at him.
“Sorry, my dear employees,” Lucius said with a polite smile. “I need to take my wife home. She’s a bit tipsy,.” He gently led her out of the restaurant, leaving the cheers and laughter behind.
Roger grabbed Layla’s blazer and handbag before hurrying to catch up with them outside. Lucius carefully helped Layla into the backseat of the car, taking her belongings from Roger with a nod of appreciation. “You should head home now,” he said in a more composed tone.
Roger stepped back, watching as the car pulled away, leaving the restaurant behind.
In the car, Layla began singing a loud and off-key rendition of a birthday song, much to Lucius’s dismay. He kept trying to get her to stop, his tone patient but firm. “Layla, that’s enough,” he said repeatedly.
But Layla, undeterred, pressed a finger to her pouted lips and gave him a wide-eyed look. “Do you hate my singing?” she whispered, her voice soft as if sharing a secret. “Ruby says I sound like a famous singer.”
Lucius sighed, glancing at her with a faint smile. “No, I don’t hate it. But you’re distracting the driver.”
Layla blinked, processing his words, then leaned forward, grasping the seat in front of her to peer at the driver. “Are you getting distracted, Brother?” she asked with a serious expression, her eyes narrowing in mock concern.
The driver faltered, clearly caught off guard by the question. His gaze flickered to Lucius in the rear-view mirror, who gave him a subtle nod.
“Uh… Yes, Madam,” the driver admitted, stuttering slightly.
Layla gasped in mock horror and quickly slumped back into her seat, clasping her hands dramatically over her mouth.
“Oh no! I’m so sorry!” she whispered, her voice full of exaggerated guilt. Lucius could only shake his head as he chuckled.
Layla leaned back, pressing both her hands and her face against the window, staring out into the night. Lucius, sensing trouble, acted quickly. In one swift motion, he pulled her onto his lap, securing her firmly. He knew that leaving her to her own devices would only invite more chaos. A fleeting thought crossed his mind—perhaps he should have postponed his father’s call after all.
“I’m not a kid! Why are you holding me like this?” Layla whined, squirming in his grip, clearly irritated by the sudden restraint.

Lucius sighed, tightening his hold slightly to keep her from wriggling free. “Because you didn’t listen to me,” he said.
“I did. I always listen to you,” Layla insisted, her voice softening as she pressed the tip of her index finger against Lucius’s chest. Her cheeks were now flushed a deeper shade of red, a clear sign of how much she’d had to drink. “It’s you who don’t listen to me,” she added, her words slightly slurred.
Lucius raised an eyebrow, amused. “When did I ever not listen to you?” he asked, his tone light, trying to keep the conversation playful.
“You didn’t let me enjoy myself,” Layla murmured, her lips forming a pout. “I dance well, and they were all excited, cheering for me.”
Lucius let out a quiet chuckle, shaking his head. “How am I supposed to let my wife dance in front of so many people when she was drunk?” he muttered, his voice gentle but laced with protectiveness.
Layla leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder. “You’re no fun,” she mumbled, closing her eyes as exhaustion from the alcohol began to weigh on her.
Lucius glanced down at her with a soft smile, adjusting his hold to keep her comfortable. Though her words were hazy, he knew she’d thank him in the morning and at the same time, she would be embarrassed.
