Chapter 72: Sylvia Mancini’s return
As Lucius carefully settled Layla onto the mattress, her eyes fluttered open, and she whispered, “I saw someone outside the company earlier. I forgot to tell you.”
Lucius paused, thinking she might be rambling in her drunken state. “You must’ve seen an employee,” he suggested, trying to dismiss it.
But Layla shook her head slightly. “No. The man was suspicious… and he had a camera too.”
Lucius’s brows furrowed at her words, his mind sharpening despite the situation. If she was right, this wasn’t something to take lightly. “My eyes are tired,” she murmured, her lids drooping as she slowly drifted off to sleep.
He stayed beside her, gently adjusting the duvet and making sure she was comfortable. Once her breathing steadied and she was fully asleep, Lucius removed her heels and carefully tucked her in. Layla turned onto her side, pulling the duvet closer, sinking deeper into slumber.
Lucius stood up quietly, his mind replaying her words. He pulled his phone from his pocket, intending to alert his men, but hesitated. It was late, and he didn’t want to disturb them if this was nothing.
Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Lucius resolved to investigate the situation himself. He needed to know who that man with the camera was—and why he was hanging around their company.
After switching off the lights, Lucius quietly left the room and drove to the company, his mind focused on the possible threat. Arriving at the office, he made his way directly to the CCTV control room. Though it was late, the building still had a few departments running, with employees working to meet deadlines.
As soon as Lucius entered the control room, the staff immediately stood and greeted him, surprised by his late-night visit.
“Sir!” they chorused, standing at attention.
“Keep seated,” Lucius said, waving a hand dismissively. “I need you to check the outside CCTVs from this morning until the end of the day.” His voice was calm but authoritative, making it clear that this wasn’t a casual request.
One of the employees nodded and quickly got to work, pulling up the relevant footage. Lucius stood by, his gaze fixed on the screens, waiting to see if Layla’s suspicion would be confirmed.
“Stop! Zoom this,” Lucius said as he found a man wearing a cap and mask coming out of the parking lot before pacing in front of the company.
“Check the CCTVs from the parking lot of the early morning near 8:30 a.m.” he stated. On the screen, he spotted the man lifting the camera when Layla exited the car. He clenched his fists and decided to act on it– his first task in the morning.
He finally took out the phone from his pocket and called Aiden. Walking away from the control room, Lucius waited for him to answer the call. “Yes, Boss?”
“There’s a suspicious man roaming around the company. I think he’s targeting Layla. Tomorrow early in the morning, stay in the parking lot. You need to nab that person,” Lucius instructed him.
“I understand, Boss,” Aiden replied.
“Good,” Lucius replied before hanging up the call. As he exited the company and neared his car, a voice familiar voice stopped him. His hard expressions suddenly softened and he turned to look at the woman.
Sylvia Mancini.
“You still work late nights,” she remarked, closing the distance between them. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around him, kissing his cheek in her casual, familiar way before stepping back.
Lucius’s expression darkened slightly. “I’m married, Sylvia. Don’t do that ever again,” he stated firmly, his voice steady but serious.
Sylvia raised an eyebrow, unfazed. “That’s the way I’ve always greeted you,” she said with a nonchalant smile, brushing off his warning as if it meant little to her. Before Lucius could respond, she casually walked over to the passenger side of his car and opened the door, sliding in as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Lucius stood there for a moment, his patience wearing thin. He hadn’t seen Sylvia for a year almost, and her sudden appearance at this hour was more than just an unwelcome surprise. He walked over to the driver’s side, opening the door and leaning on it.
“Why are you here, Sylvia?” he asked, his tone cool as he eyed her warily. Whatever she wanted, it was clear she hadn’t come for some pleasantries.
“I just landed in Italy an hour ago. Take me home,” Sylvia said, her voice edged with impatience.
“Excuse me, sir, would you like me to place this trolley in the trunk?” the driver asked, standing by the car.
“Yes, please. Put it in the trunk,” Sylvia instructed, nodding curtly. The driver quickly complied, loading the luggage with practiced efficiency before approaching the passenger side. Sylvia lowered the window and handed him a few bills, a brief exchange of thanks passing between them.
“You should be heading to the hotel, shouldn’t you?” Lucius frowned from the driver’s seat as he finally sat inside, his tone carrying an air of irritation as he glanced her way.
“I knew you’d be at the office, so I came straight here.” She paused, her gaze hardening as she took in his disheveled appearance. “What’s got you so tense? Have you forgotten the promise you made to Matteo?”

Lucius remained silent, slipping into the driver’s seat. Without a word, he turned the key, and the engine roared to life as he steered the car onto the road.
As they sped away, Sylvia’s eyes caught the glint of a ring on his hand. Her voice softened, though laced with bitterness, “You always turned down my proposals… yet here you are, wearing one.”
“You were aware about my feelings for you,” Lucius stated.
“I heard she is a worthless, illegitimate daughter of the Rosenzweig Family,” Sylvia harshly remarked.
“I won’t hesitate to throw you out. So, watch your tongue,” Lucius warned her.
“Do it,” Sylvia challenged him and chuckled. “Well, you can’t do it because you are the reason Matteo died,” she affirmed.
