Chapter 76: I want the head pat
Under the shade of a towering tree, Lucius had meticulously set up their picnic on the green glass floor. The peaceful estate stretched out before them, vast and serene, as August ran joyfully through the open field, his laughter echoing in the quiet.
Layla took a deep breath, savoring the fresh air and the tranquility around them. The estate felt like an oasis, far removed from the bustle of the world.
“There’s no one around,” Layla observed, her eyes scanning the empty landscape before settling on Lucius, who was lying comfortably on the soft cloth they had spread out. A wide-brimmed hat covered his face.
Lucius lazily lowered the hat to his chest, revealing his eyes as they met hers. “It’s a private estate,” he explained, his voice calm and unhurried. “I didn’t think going to a public park was the best idea.”
Layla nodded, understanding his reasoning. The privacy felt luxurious, a chance to escape from prying eyes and enjoy the day in peace. She glanced toward August, who was still running around, his small figure darting between the trees.
“Call August,” she said with a soft smile, settling herself on the picnic cloth beside the baskets filled with food. “He should eat some sandwiches before he gets too tired.”
Lucius let out a small chuckle, watching Layla as she neatly arranged the food. “Alright,” he said, sitting up and stretching his arms out. “August!” he called, his deep voice carrying across the field.
The boy turned toward them, his face bright with excitement as he ran back. Layla couldn’t help but smile at the sight of him.
“Brother, catch me!” August called out with a burst of energy, dashing away once more.
Lucius, smiling, sprang to his feet, quickly giving chase. Within moments, he caught the boy and effortlessly hoisted him onto his shoulders, both of them laughing as they made their way back to the picnic spot.
Once they arrived, Lucius gently set August down and knelt to help him remove his shoes. “There you go,” he said with a soft grin, making sure the boy was comfortable as he settled on the cloth.
Layla, watching with a warm smile, handed a plate with two sandwiches to August, ruffling his hair affectionately before giving him a gentle pat on the head. “Eat up,” she said kindly.
“Thank you, Sister!” August beamed and immediately began devouring the sandwiches with enthusiasm.
Lucius, not missing a beat, reached for his own plate but playfully turned his gaze to Layla. “I want the head pat too,” he teased with a grin.
Layla raised an eyebrow, stifling a laugh. “What? Don’t be a kid!” she chuckled softly, shaking her head.
“Then, I’m not eating,” Lucius whispered in Layla’s ear, his voice teasing yet laced with mock seriousness.
Layla rolled her eyes but quickly patted his head. “There, happy now?” she said with a smirk.
Lucius grinned triumphantly and finally began eating. Layla shook her head in disbelief, amused by how even around kids, Lucius’s playful jealousy managed to show.
Once they finished their sandwiches, Lucius stood up and stretched. “Let’s play a little,” he suggested, glancing at August, who was already brimming with energy again. He felt that the boy should have a moment to remember, something he could cherish—a day filled with happiness.
Layla agreed, and soon the three of them were running around, playing games on the vast green field. Lucius found himself laughing more than he expected, caught up in the simplicity of the fun, while Layla smiled at how naturally he interacted with August.
After some time, Layla excused herself, feeling the need for a break. She sat down on the soft cloth, reaching for a bottle of water.
Taking a few sips, she recapped the bottle and set it aside. As she caught her breath, her eyes wandered back to Lucius and August, who were still running around and laughing together.
She smiled to herself, watching Lucius effortlessly match August’s energy. The sight was too sweet to ignore. Layla picked up her phone and snapped a few pictures of the two, capturing their playful bond.
“He becomes a kid around a kid,” she murmured softly, her heart warming at the sight. Lucius, who was usually so composed and serious, seemed completely at ease, as if the weight of his responsibilities had suddenly lifted from his shoulders for a while.
By the evening, the three of them were completely exhausted, stretched out on the soft cloth under the fading light. August, tired from all the running and laughing, lay nestled between Lucius and Layla, his small chest rising and falling steadily as he drifted off to sleep.
Layla turned her head slightly, her voice barely above a whisper, “Did you enjoy the day?”
Lucius, eyes closed but a soft smile on his lips, replied, “Hmm. Did you?”
“Of course!” she responded, her voice light and happy.
There was a brief, comfortable silence before Lucius spoke again, his tone gentle and sincere, “Layla, I love you.”

His sudden confession caught her off guard, her cheeks flushing a soft pink as she processed his words. Before she could respond, she felt the warmth of his hand reach up to her cheek, his fingers softly caressing her skin.
She smiled, her heart racing a little faster, and leaned into his touch. August moved slightly in his sleep and Lucius quickly pulled back his hand. “I think it’s the time to leave,” he said.
“August is asleep. I think Aunt Maggie must be home by now. I’ll give her a call,” Layla suggested, slowly rising from her place. Meanwhile, Lucius carefully scooped the sleeping boy into his arms, ensuring not to wake him. He gently settled August into the backseat of the car, closing the door quietly.
As Layla made the call, Lucius began gathering the rest of the picnic items. “Aunt Maggie is back home. She was very thankful that we took care of August,” Layla said, smiling as she helped pack up the last of the baskets.
Just as she was about to lift the baskets, Lucius grabbed her wrists, stopping her in the tracks. She looked up at him, a little confused. Without saying a word, Lucius cupped her face, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to her lips.
“Thank you for this day,” he murmured softly against her lips before kissing her deeply, his gratitude and affection clear in the way he held her close. Layla’s breath caught in her chest as she melted into the kiss, her heart fluttering with joy at how they spent their time together.
