Chapter 80: Invited her death
Late at night, Lucius stirred, his mind racing with the unresolved mystery of why Layla was being photographed. Careful not to disturb her peaceful slumber, he quietly slid out of bed.
His movements were quiet as he grabbed his car keys and left the room, slipping into the night with a sense of urgency.
The drive to the base was swift. He had already called Roger, who was waiting at the base.
Upon arriving, Lucius stepped out of the car, and Roger greeted him with a respectful bow. The two walked in silence, their footsteps echoing down the dimly lit corridor as they made their way to the cell.
As the heavy door creaked open, Lucius saw the man lying on the cold, hard floor. The moment their eyes met, the man scrambled to his feet, fear evident in his posture.
Lucius wasted no time. His voice was sharp, each word dripping with menace. “Why were you tailing Layla?” he asked, his gaze never leaving the man. “And don’t even think about lying. I’m not in the mood for games tonight.”
Lucius took the pistol from Roger, letting the weight of the weapon punctuate his words. “So speak the truth while I’m still asking nicely.”
The man’s eyes darted from Lucius to the gun in his hand, clearly shaken by the open threat.
“It—it was someone from the woman’s family,” the man stammered, trembling under Lucius’ cold gaze.
“Who?” Lucius demanded, his voice sharp and unyielding.
“A lady… but she never gave me her name, and I didn’t ask,” the man quickly responded, his fear palpable. “Please, let me go, Sir,” he begged, desperation creeping into his tone.
Lucius pointed the pistol directly at him, his eyes narrowing. “I have no intention of letting you go until you tell me exactly who the lady was. How you got paid, what she said, and every single detail I want to hear. And no lies.” His voice was low and menacing as he lowered the pistol slightly, giving the man a brief moment of hope.
But without warning, Lucius pulled the trigger. The bullet tore through the man’s right thigh, slamming into the wall behind him.
“Ahhh!” The man’s scream echoed in the confined cell as he collapsed to the ground, clutching his bleeding leg, his face twisted in agony.
Lucius remained calm while the pistol was still in hand as he watched the man writhe on the floor. “Now,” he said quietly, “start talking. Tell me who the woman was and if she ordered you to kill Layla,” Lucius demanded.
“Just tell the Boss,” Roger chimed in, stepping forward menacingly. “Because if you don’t, you won’t make it out of this cell.”
“I really don’t know the lady’s name,” the man stammered, panic flashing in his eyes. “And… yes, I was ordered to kill Layla,” he finally admitted, his voice trembling.
Lucius felt a surge of rage at the man’s confession. His grip on the pistol tightened, a grim look settling on his face. ‘Either it was Orabela or Seraphina!’ He thought. This time, he wouldn’t spare either of them.
“Why?” Lucius demanded, leaning closer, his eyes burning with intensity. “What reason did she give?”
The man winced, struggling to pull himself together. “I… I don’t know. I only take money to carry out the tasks. Please let me go. I’ve told you the entire truth.”
Lucius narrowed his eyes, his voice low and menacing. “If you want to live, you’ll do what I say.”
“Ye-Yes, I will do whatever you ask! But please, just don’t kill me,” the man begged again, desperation creeping into his voice.
Lucius studied him for a moment, weighing the sincerity of his plea. “Tend to his wound,” he ordered Roger, turning on his heel to leave the cell.
Once outside, Lucius leaned against the cold door of his car, taking a deep breath to calm the storm brewing within him. He waited for Roger to come, who finally showed himself. Lucius threw the pistol toward him and he easily caught it.
“Who could stoop so low to harm Madam Layla?” Roger worriedly asked. “I wonder if it’s Orabela. Her tone clearly shows how much she hates Madam,” he muttered.
“Whoever it is, she had invited her death,” Lucius said with a bitter tone.
“Does Madam know about this?” Roger asked, his brow furrowing with concern.
“Not yet. I’ll tell her after I find out who’s behind this. Tomorrow morning, find out where they both met,” Lucius instructed, his voice steady and authoritative.
“Yes, Boss,” Roger replied with a nod, ready to carry out the task.

As Lucius turned to leave, Roger hesitated, stopping him in his tracks. “Boss, Sylvia came by this morning, trying to get into the mansion. I asked her to leave, but she was quite arrogant this time.”
Lucius furrowed his brows, curiosity piqued. “What else did she want?”
“I think she wants to move into the mansion with you. She had a cabin bag in her hand, and I wonder if she’s here after hearing about your marriage with Madam Layla,” Roger explained, concern etched on his face.
Lucius scoffed, irritation bubbling to his face. “Of course! What more does she want from me?”
“Why don’t you get harsh with her this time? She has no right to bother you anymore. You’ve done more than enough for her,” Roger suggested, his tone firm yet concerned.
“I’ll see what I have to do. I can’t just make her leave. You know she’s hot-headed,” Lucius replied, his tone firm. “I’ll deal with her later. First, I need to take care of the enemies who are after Layla’s life.”
“I understand, Boss,” Roger said, nodding in agreement.
Lucius slid into the driver’s seat and lowered the window. “Did she say anything to you?” he inquired, curiosity flickering in his eyes.
Roger shook his head, a chuckle escaping him. “No. What could Sylvia possibly say to me?” He brushed off the question with a lighthearted tone, trying to ease the tension.
However, Lucius read his eyes. He knew Sylvia might have hurt Roger with her harsh words again. This time he truly needed to put a stop on his relationship with Sylvia. But would it be easy? Would Matteo forgive him if he stopped looking after his sister?
