Chapter 84: Died in my arms
Sylvia threw the vase and it hit the wall before shattering into pieces. She took out her anger by throwing objects here and there. After a good ranting session, Sylvia slumped to the chair and took out her phone from inside her handbag.
“How dare she threaten me? Layla challenged me that I can’t make her divorce Lucius. She doesn’t know who I am and what I am capable of,” Sylvia muttered and typed something on her phone.
Just then, she heard a knock on the door and wondered if it were the hotel manager.
Someone must have heard the noises earlier. Opening the door, she saw Roger on the door. “What are you doing here?” she asked with a frown. She was going to slam the door at his face when he stopped her.
“Boss is waiting for you in the lobby,” said Roger and walked away.
“Did Lucius come for me? I think he scolded Layla for treating me in such a bad way,” she murmured with a smile. Running her hand through her dress, she headed out of the room after taking the key card.
In the lobby, her eyes lit up to see Lucius. She remembered the first time she saw Lucius. That was the moment she fell for him. He looked so poised and calm while his expressions were unreadable.
“You should leave,” Sylvia instructed Roger.
“He will stay here. Don’t order him. He is not your servant,” Lucius coldly said. He clasped his hands together, resting them on his lap. “Take a seat, Roger,” he said, who nodded and settled next to Lucius.
“Did you see how your wife treated me? Do you really think Matteo would have been happy seeing me getting humiliated in such a way? Also, I’m sorry. I should not have said that,” Sylvia stated, her tone softer than before.
“I don’t need your apology,” Lucius stated. “Layla is my choice. I love her. So, don’t even think about doing anything bad to her. All these years I’ve been quiet for Matteo. And my wife was right earlier. If your brother were alive, he would not have either approved your childish actions,” he pronounced with a menace.
Sylvia clenched her fists. “You are wrong and so is your wife. Matteo wanted his sister’s happiness more than anything in this world,” she said with her eyes turning misty.
“Of course. But not the way you want,” Lucius said. “This is the last time I am seeing you. Don’t make me feel disgusted of you,” he clarified.
“Really, Lucius? What about my feelings?” Sylvia asked, bringing her hand to her chest.
“You need to really look for another man because I’m committed and married. You should get this in your head soon. I’ve transferred the remaining assets of your brother’s company in your name. Though he wanted me to run it, but I think it’s the time I should give you the responsibility of that. With that, our communication stops here. After today if you contact me, or try to bother me or Layla, the consequences won’t be good. You know my threats well, so be wise.” Lucius stood up and slid his hands into his pocket before walking away.
Sylvia called his name out but he didn’t stop. Roger, instead, stood before her. “The file carrying the assets of your brother’s company. I hope you get some sanity,” he said and followed his boss.
Sylvia tightened her hand around the file as more tears poured down her cheeks.

Layla turned her head to watch as Lucius stepped into the car, his expression a mix of relief and lingering uncertainty. “It’s done. I should have taken action long ago, but… I was afraid. Afraid of so many things,” he admitted, his voice quieter than usual.
She reached over, placing her hand gently on his, offering a reassuring squeeze. “But you did it. You took action, and that’s what matters now,” she affirmed with a soft smile.
Lucius glanced at her, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Thanks to you,” he replied, feeling a weight lift from his chest. He turned his gaze to the front. “Take us to the central graveyard,” he instructed the driver.
Layla’s brows furrowed in confusion. “The graveyard? Why?” she asked, her voice flustered, unsure of where this sudden request was leading.
Lucius looked at her, his expression soft yet firm. “You should see the place where Matteo rests. He’ll be happy to see you,” he said, his words carrying a quiet reverence for his late friend.
In the rearview mirror, Roger, caught a glimpse of the exchange, a small smile forming on his lips. He had always believed Layla was exactly what Lucius needed—someone to give him the love and support he had long deserved.
The car drove off toward the central graveyard, the journey taking nearly two hours. Along the way, Layla had stopped to purchase a small bouquet of white lilies. When they finally arrived, she stepped out of the car, holding Lucius’s hand as they walked together, Roger following closely behind.
They reached Matteo’s grave, and Lucius stopped, a heavy silence settling around them. Layla bent down, gently placing the bouquet of lilies on the grave. She stood up, her voice soft as she spoke, “I’m Layla, Lucius’s wife.”
Roger thought to give them some privacy and walked away.
“Matteo and I were high school friends. He saved me from some bullies once and that was the moment, our connection became stronger. Matteo’s family history is of mafias too. He lost his parents when he graduated from the school because of a notorious gang. That’s when we both decided to put an end to that gang because the police couldn’t do anything. I always wanted to take out my anger somewhere, so that kind of work was best for me. However, four years ago something terrible happened. I was late to rescue Matteo. And… he died in my arms,” Lucius said, a tear left his eye and it fell on the graveyard stone while regret filled him once again.
