Chapter 87: Attempt to murder
Back at the Rosenzweig mansion, Orabela froze at the sight of the police inside the house. Cold sweat beaded on her forehead, and her heart raced in panic.
“Who here is Mrs. Seraphina?” one of the officers asked as his partner scanned the room. Moments later, Darius and the rest of the family stepped out, concern etched on their faces.
“Officers!” Darius addressed them, trying to keep his voice steady. “May I ask what brings you here?”
The senior officer stepped forward, holding out a document. “Mr. Rosenzweig, we need to speak to Mrs. Seraphina. There’s a complaint registered against her. Please call her here.” His tone was formal but unyielding.
Darius’s eyes widened as he glanced at the FIR. Meanwhile, Seraphina entered the room, visibly shaken.
“Why are you arresting her, Officer?” Miriam questioned anxiously.
“Mrs. Seraphina is facing an attempted murder charge,” another officer replied.
Darius turned to Seraphina, his gaze sharp and demanding. “Seraphina, did you attempt to kill Layla?”
“No! That’s not true!” Seraphina cried, her face pale with terror. But before she could say more, another officer stepped forward, following his senior’s instructions, and secured her wrists in handcuffs. Seraphina begged them to stop, her voice cracking, but her pleas fell on deaf ears as the officers led her toward the door.
“You have the right to hire a lawyer for the further process,” the officer said, who cuffed her. The next moment, she was dragged out of the house while she shouted for help while looking at Darius.
Once they left, Lady Agatha hit the stick against the ground. “Layla and her mother always create trouble for this family. There’s no need to help her. It’s good if she stays imprisoned,” said Lady Agatha to Darius.
“Mom, do you even know what it will lead to? My company will be affected,” Darius said, and he walked away before calling his lawyer.
“This is why I always asked you to keep control of your husband. He still prefers that witch over you,” the old said bitterly while looking at Miriam. “Go to your room, Orabela. Don’t take stress,” she opined.
“Hmm.” Orabela went upstairs and closed the door behind her. “Layla’s mother wanted to kill her,” she chuckled and smiled. “I wish she could succeed in it. At least, I didn’t have to see Layla’s face ever,” she muttered.
Just then, she heard some voices coming from the outside. Heading to the window, she peeked out only to see a bunch of reporters present in the foray. They were trying to get in, but the security guards had stopped them.
Orabela’s eyes grew big and she turned on the TV to find out what exactly was going on. How did the reporters get a whiff of this? “Did Layla send them here?” she murmured and recalled how a few weeks ago, the reporters had surrounded her and humiliated her.
Switching to the news channel, Orabela was shocked to see what was being broadcast.
ROSENZWEIG FAMILY TRIED TO MURDER THEIR OWN DAUGHTER!
IS IT BECAUSE OF THE HEIRESS SUCCESSION PROCESS?
HOW COULD A MOTHER DO THIS?
ARE MORE FAMILY MEMBERS INVOLVED?
Orabela brought her hand to her hair and caught a fistful of them in frustration. After two days, Darius was going to declare her the next heiress of the Rosenzweig Groups. Now, this?
She came out of her thoughts when her phone buzzed.
“Rick!” Orabela pronounced as soon as she answered the call.
“What the fuck did your family do this time?” Roderick shouted from the other side. “Don’t tell me you were also involved in this,” he said, restraining his anger.
“No. Why would I attempt such a crime? It was Layla’s mother, who was arrested for attempting to murder Layla,” Orabela told him.
“Tell your Dad to sort this out. If this persists, you know how difficult it may get for your succession as the next heiress,” Roderick said, his voice calmer than before.
“Nothing will happen, Rick. I will be the next heiress because I am destined for it. Don’t check the news. I think Layla has again bought the media to tarnish my family’s reputation,” Orabela asserted and finally lowered her hand from her hair.
“Bella, I trust you. But I don’t trust Layla’s mother. I remember Layla mentioning her mother never supported her. Because if this complaint turned out to be true, you will also bear the consequences,” Roderick warned her.

“Hmm. I know,” Orabela said, her voice turning low. The call disconnected and she lowered her hand. “I can’t let Layla take this from me. I will ask Dad to do something about it,” she murmured and rushed downstairs.
When she arrived in the living room, she saw her father heading to the police station.
“Dad, I’ll also accompany you,” Orabela said.
“No. Stay here with your grandma and mother,” Darius told her.
“Your father is right,” Miriam stated.
“Mom, it’s about our family. Let me accompany you, Dad. We need to make her understand to take back this false complaint,” Orabela stated. “The company stocks will definitely be affected once the news spreads everywhere,” she added.
“Follow me,” Darius stated.
Orabela gave a last glance to her mother and ran behind her father. Sitting in the backseat of the car, they drove off to the police station.
Once there, they found a whole crowd of the media present too. The security and the police came forward to safely take them inside.
Orabela’s feet slowed down as she saw Layla seated on the chair, talking with the officer—Lucius, as always present by her side.
“Thank you, Officer, for cooperating,” Layla said and stood up while carrying her handbag. As she turned around her eyes met with Darius and Orabela.
“Layla, don’t do this! I have not done anything,” shouted Seraphina from inside the cell.
Darius was quick to approach Layla and said in a low voice, “What’s this? How could you–”
“Officer, may I have a request?” Layla interrupted her father in the middle.
“Please, Mrs. De Salvo,” said the officer and came forward.
“I want you to protect me from all the members of the Rosenzweig family. They all have tried to harm me in the past as well,” Layla pronounced, shocking both Darius and Orabela.
