Chapter 89: The right judgement
Alekis folded the newspaper and placed it on the table. Picking up the saucer, he took a sip of the tea. “I think the Rosenzweig family has many problems with them,” he said after lowering the cup on the saucer.
“Father, it’s because of Layla. Ever since she has married in this house, all we have seen is the bad news,” Fiona said. “She doesn’t possess any rights, that’s why she’s acting in such a way,” she added.
“What do you mean?” Alekis inquired.
“Mr. Darius is going to declare Orabela as the heiress and future chairwoman of the Rosenzweig Groups tomorrow. But just a day ago, Layla filed a complaint against her own mother. Why would your own mother try to kill you? That’s a false charge. Layla is trying to snatch the legitimate rights of Orabela,” Fiona explained. Her hands remained on her lap as she clasped them together.
Alekis furrowed his brows together and quietly sipped the tea.
“Good morning, Grandpa, Mom,” Roderick’s voice reached his ears.
“Good morning,” Alekis and Fiona replied at the same time. Alekis lowered the the saucer to his lap. “You are in a rush today. What’s the occasion?” he asked.
“Grandpa, today is the official bidding day for the land in the town for the future construction project. I’m going to win this bid,” Roderick said with an enthusiastic smile.
“My grandson will definitely win,” Alekis said. “Have your breakfast before leaving. Fiona, you~” Roderick cut his grandfather in the middle.
“I’ll have my breakfast in the company. I need to leave,” Roderick said, looking at his watch. He gazed at his mother, gave her a nod, and then left.
“Rick is working so hard these days. If Antoine had been alive, he would have been proud of Roderick,” Fiona said, tears appearing on the edges of her eyes. “Antoine always used to speak about how Roderick would work by his side,” she added.
Alexis was upset to hear that. However, he was aware that Roderick still had a lot to learn; he wasn’t as sharp as his father in his work. This was why Alexis wanted Lucius to guide Roderick.
Fiona wondered what was going on in Alekis’s mind. She just hoped that everything would go in Roderick’s favor.

Meanwhile, Layla and Lucius were present in the court for the first hearing. Since the judges hadn’t come yet, Layla excused herself and headed to the restroom. As she headed back to the courtroom, her feet slowly came to a halt. Before her, Darius was standing.
Layla knew what he would say next. So, she decided to ignore him and resumed her walk. However, Darius stopped her.
“You should consider a lesser punishment for your mother. It is my fault to let the people call you my illegitimate daughter,” Darius stated.
“I’m not going lenient, Mr. Rosenzweig. And it’s such an irony that you are blaming people for calling me an illegitimate daughter when it was clearly you, who deprived me of every right I had. Do you now realize how much low I felt when you, your wife, your daughter, your mother and even your mistress blamed my birth as if it was my choice?”
Layla’s eyes filled with tears as she recalled the injustice she had suffered in that house. Yet, today her father was asking her to pardon Seraphina.
“Layla, our family is getting destroyed because of this,” Darius said. “The company has been affected badly. I will make sure no one says anything wrong about you,” he asserted.
“How will you cover the damage you and your entire family have been doing to me all these years?” Layla questioned her. She clenched her fists tightly as anger simmered inside her.
“Layla, I’ll give you the status in the family. But please… Consider releasing your mother this time. She didn’t want to kill you. I talked to her and realized it was the assassin, who took the wrong meaning of her words,” said Darius.
Layla chuckled and shook her head. “You should have told me let the law punish her and I would give you your rights. Instead, you are asking me to withdraw the charges. Never. I will make sure all of you see hell,” she pronounced. “If you want me to not tell the truth to the media after hearing, you’ll not choose Orabela as the next heiress nor you’ll make her the chairwoman.” Layla then turned on her heels and walked straight to the courtroom.
She had made her moves, now it was her father’s turn to fall for them.
Entering the court, she sat next to Lucius, who grasped her hand warmly. “Did Darius begin manipulating you?” he asked with a whisper.
“Yes. He asked me to withdraw the charges,” Layla replied. “He never loved me, Lucius. I feel pathetic,” she murmured.
“Don’t say that. You are precious to me,” he whispered, drawing circles on the back of his hand to calm her nerves. “The battle has just begun. And I know you’ll win this war against your disgusting family,” he asserted.
“Hmm.” She gazed at Seraphina, wanting to ask why she resorted to killing her own daughter. What wrong did she commit? But Layla feared that her mother would say something, which could badly hurt her.
Just then, the three judges entered and everyone stood up in respect before settling on their places.

As expected, Seraphina got a ten-year imprisonment term for attempting the murder of her daughter through a hired assassin. As the court adjourned, and they made their way out, the media surrounded Layla while Lucius securely wrapped his arm around her.
“Mrs. De Salvo, what do you want to say on this judgment?” the first reporter asked.
“We have heard that you were being mistreated in your own house. Is that true?” the second one questioned.
“Did your entire family use to harass you and threaten to kill you all the time?” the third one pushed the mic closer to Layla’s mouth.
Layla gazed at her father, who was standing near the car and was being questioned.
“I’m happy with the judgement. Yes, I’ve been mistreated to be born. All of them wanted me to die. According to them, I should not have existed,” Layla said. The bodyguards and police officers pushed away the media while Lucius dragged Layla safely to the car.
