Rebirth: Love in the Apocalypse - Chapter 56
Chapter 56: Market
“Sister, sister, …” A voice called and Qin Wu turned to see a young boy.
The boy was about six and looked a little malnourished.
However, he had bright eyes and the way he looked at Qin Wu was like looking at a saviour.
Qin Wu sighed and plastered a smile on her lips.
“Little boy, can I help you?” She asked.
“I can tell that sister likes to be clean.” The little boy said in a confident voice.
“How do you know?” Qin Wu couldn’t help but cooperate with the little boy.
“My sister is wearing white but she isn’t dirty. Does my sister want to buy detergent and bathing soap? I know the best place to buy these things?” The little boy said, proudly thumping his chest.
A moment later, he looked around and signalled Qin Wu to come closer.
“Sister, you don’t want to buy these things in the official shop.” The boy whispered and Qin Wu narrowed her eyes.
‘Is there an underground market already?’ She wondered.
However, her expression didn’t change and she continued to chat with the boy.
“Is there anywhere else I can buy them?” She asked and the boy readily nodded.
‘This child is too honest. He will b easily cheated.’ Qin Wu thought.
“My sister can follow me if she believes me.”
“Good.” Qin Wu nodded and winked at Mo Chenxuan.
Since they arrived, Mo Chenxuan had been observing the market using his spiritual power.
From what he understood, most people were dissatisfied with the high prices.
Unfortunately, sellers couldn’t sell at a cheaper price because the cost of setting up a stall was ridiculously high.
As they were walking, a commotion suddenly alerted the three.
“You are not human. None of you is human.” An angry voice resounded, accompanied by falling things.
“Get out if you can’t pay the tax.” An arrogant voice countered.
Hearing this, Mo Chenxuan and Qin Wu looked at each other before heading towards the commotion.
“What’s going on?” Someone asked.
Her neighbour sighed when she heard this.
“What else can it be? The Wang brothers are here again.”
“The Wang brothers? Who are they?”
“They are gangsters.” Someone spoke through gritted teeth.
However, this answer caused confusion.
After all, the market was government property and had guards every few metres.

How could such a market allow gangsters to collect protection fees?
“Granny Liu is so old and is the only relative of her young granddaughter. Can’t you let her go?” A middle-aged woman asked.
The woman was He Jiali.
She and Granny Liu were not related but their stalls were next to each other.
Knowing the old woman’s situation, she naturally hoped the Wang brothers would take pity on her and leave her alone.
Unfortunately, she thought too much.
Before the apocalypse, the gangsters would not dare to take things too far but it was the end of the world.
What did Granny Liu have to do with them?
Why did she set up a stall if she couldn’t pay the protection fee?
The Wang brothers were very angry when they thought of this.
“Who will let us go if we let her go?” One of the Wang brothers sneered at He Jiali.
“Since you are so kind, why don’t you help her pay the fee?” Another said and He Jiali visibly shuddered.
She could barely afford to pay her own protection fee. How could she pay for others?
He Jiali regretted getting involved in the matter.
At this time, He Jiali turned away with a reluctant look and Qin Wu couldn’t help but sigh.
‘People are like this.’ Qin Wu thought and turned to Mo Chenxuan.
[These Wang brothers seem to be retreated to the guards.] Mo Chenxuan frowned.
After understanding the situation, Mo Chenxuan secretly watched the market guards.
Unexpectedly, the guards pretended not to see the commotion and didn’t care about the old day.
[Shouldn’t the market be under the army? How could the army tolerate such gangsters?] Qin Wu couldn’t understand this.
In her previous life, the army was still functional and dedicated in the early days of the apocalypse.
Although the army later became a convoluted force, this transformation should not have happened until much later in the apocalypse.
[A lot of things have changed.] Mo Chenxuan said.
After reading Uncle Zhang’s report, Mo Chenxuan knew that a lot of things had changed.
On the surface, most of the changes were good and beneficial to the survival of the human race.
However, the reality gave him pause.
After surveying the market, Mo Chenxuan suddenly felt that the good changes may be more but the bad ones were heavier.
If nothing was done, maybe the human race would die even if faster in this life.
[Should we do something about the old lady?] Qin Wu asked.
[Do you want to do something?]
[Rather than help her alone, I want to overhaul the system. Still…] Qin Wu started but a voice interrupted her words.
“Granny, I will help you pay the fee.” A gentle voice filled the surroundings.
At the same time, the speaker winked and her guards stepped forward to help the old woman stand up.
“Little girl…” Granny started, her eyes glistening with the tears.
“Don’t worry Granny. I will help you pay.”
After that, the woman paid the Wang brothers and asked them to leave the granny alone.
“What a good girl!” Qin Wu sneered; her eyes filled with disgust.
The good Samaritan was Qin Lan.
Qin Lan was petite, had a beautiful face, and doe eyes that seduced everyone to protect her.
She was a pure flower, unstained by the evil in the world.
But most importantly, she was the enemy that Qin Wu and Mo Chenxuan were determined to not let go.
‘I fell for her act in my previous life but not in this life. Qin Lan, you can no longer fool me.’ Qin Wu thought and subconsciously squeezed Mo Chenxuan’s hand.
‘Don’t worry Wu’er. I avenged you in my previous life and I will avenge you again in this life. I will not let go of anyone who hurt you.’ The man thought and a trace of ruthlessness flashed in her eyes.
At this time, Qin Lan suddenly looked over and her eyes flew comically wide.
A moment later, she trotted across the street and soon arrived in front of Qin Wu.
“Sister, when did you come to city B? Why didn’t you come home? We have all been very worried about you.” Qin Lan said, her beautiful eyes wet with tears.
Seeing this and hearing the words, Qin Wu clenched her hands but soon relaxed.
‘It’s not the time to kill her.’ She thought and a beautiful smile curled her lips.
“I arrived yesterday evening.” Qin Wu said and quickly continued.
“I was planning to visit the family after settling down.”
“Settling down? What do you mean? Aren’t you going to live at home?”
“No. I will live with my boyfriend.” Qin Wu said in a proud voice and Qin Lan almost exploded in anger.
She had naturally noticed Mo Chenxuan.
However, she was not willing to accept that such a beautiful man had something to do with Qin Wu.
‘How could a bitch like you be worthy of such a man? This man can only belong to me.’ She decided and a trace of calculation flashed in her eyes.
A moment later, her wet eyes suddenly began raining.
“Sister…wuwuwuwuuwu.” She cried loudly and Qin Wu almost rolled her eyes in frustration.
‘It’s been a while since I had to deal with such theatrics.’ She bought but had a concerned face.
“Lanlan, what’s wrong?” She asked, looking genuinely concerned.
“Sister…, sister…, how could it become like this? How could you suffer such a grievance?”
Qin Wu’s heart skipped a beat when she heard this.
Based on her understanding of Qin Lan, she knew the next words would be horrifying and insulting.
Unfortunately, she reacted too late and was too late to stop it.
“Sister, come home with me. I will ask grandfather, father, and brother to seek justice for you. Otherwise, you will be too aggrieved.” Qin Lan said in a self-righteous voice and quickly continued.
“Sister, you won’t have to sell yourself from now on. Our family has supplies and can protect you.”
‘There it is!’ Qin Wu thought and forcibly suppressed her anger.
“Such a beautiful was reduced to this.” One of the spectators said, looking at Qin Wu with a pitying expression.
“What’s there to pity?” Another sneered and quickly continued.
“Look at how she is dressed. You can tell she is unwilling to work hard and just wants someone to take care of her.”
“Now that you mention it…”
“Maybe she was one those girls in the entertainment industry before the apocalypse.”
Listening to the harsh words, Mo Chenxuan couldn’t help but be angry.
“This lady, aren’t you mistaken about something?” He asked in a contemptuous voice.
However, he didn’t wait for her to answer before he continued.
