Rebirth of Billionaire's Wife - Chapter 131
Chapter 131: It’s the most devastating moment of my life Chapter 131: It’s the most devastating moment of my life Eveline’s cheeks became pale at the sound of Gabriel’s comments, but the next moment, she noticed the corner of his lips twisted up in an enticing smile.
It then struck Eveline like an arrow, and she slapped his arm.
“Gabriel Winston, how dare you make fun of me like that!!” She shouted and continued to slap him, only to hear his hearty chuckle in response.
Eveline nearly had a heart attack when she realized Gabriel had doubts about her rebirth.
But, thank goodness, he was just pulling her leg.
She instantly broke away from his grip and was on her feet.
Just as Eveline was about to ask him to go, the sound of a car entering the property prompted her to furrowed her brow.
Her gaze immediately shifted to the clock on the wall, and she whispered, “Isn’t he overworking himself?” Eveline had been notified that Jonathan would be working late, but she had no idea it was this late.
Her father returned home at half past ten.
Gabriel furrowed as he watched her mumbling to herself, gently crawling onto the bed, making himself comfortable, and asking, “Aren’t we sleeping, Eve?” Eveline snapped out of her thoughts and gave him a bewildered expression.
She knew she was at a loss either way, so she gave up on the thought of negotiating with him and crossed to the other side of the bed to join him.
Gabriel’s lips twisted into a lovely smile, and he eagerly brought her close to him.
Eveline threw her arm over his torso and rested her head against his chest.
The sound of his tranquil heartbeat was like a soothing lullaby, washing away all of her worries.
She gradually relaxed in his comfort and continued to stare ahead, dazed.
Gabriel stroked her hair while they continued to be silent.
This was serene, he told himself.
He never imagined that holding someone to sleep would be so relaxing.
However, she was more than simply someone; she was Eveline, his Eve.
“I’m sorry I didn’t understand your efforts earlier,” he abruptly added, startling Eveline to look up.
She took a long glance at him before returning to rest her head on his chest.
“It does not matter,” she mumbled, causing him to grimace.
“For you don’t know, but for me it does because, despite you giving me the opportunity to court you, I couldn’t bring myself to believe it,” he replied, and she closed her eyes in despair.
Eveline agreed to him, but her heart did not entirely accept it.
If her past life tragedies hadn’t been so heartbreaking, she might have given it serious thought.
“Have you ever lost hope in life?” she inquired, as he glanced down at her with a serious expression.
Eveline noticed the quietness in his movements and looked up, resting her chin on the back of her palm.
Gabriel took a moment to gather his courage before shaking his head.
“I did and it’s the most devastating moment of my life.” Gabriel’s grip on her tightened as he remembered an incident she once described to him.
“Was it during the time you found yourself trapped around the goons?” he inquired, considering the only option.

Eveline’s eyes became cloudy with the scorching tears, and she denied with a trembling voice, “No.” Gabriel’s expression furrowed in response to her denial, making him contemplate his feelings.
If not at that moment, what led Eveline to lose hope?
Silence followed the two until Gabriel heard Eveline’s mild snoring and cautiously peered down to find her asleep.
A sense of relief washed over his face, and a slight smile appeared on his lips before he leaned in to kiss her forehead.
He chose to show up there because he wanted to witness her fall asleep in his arms.
He saw Eveline was nodding off in his embrace, which gave him a cause to come for her.
“I’m not sure what caused you this trauma, but I promise to help you get through it,” he mumbled against her forehead, his arms softly squeezing her with protectiveness before falling asleep.
The next morning, Eveline awoke alone.
Gabriel was gone, and she felt a huge relief.
Unlike the last time, he did not insist on sleeping longer than intended, and she was finally able to run her errands without interruption.
Eveline hurriedly took a shower, dressed, and headed out of her room, towards the dining area, when she came to an abrupt halt.
Her father sat there, and her gaze was drawn to a familiar figure sitting next to him.
‘What the freak!’ Eveline yelled in her mind, finding Gabriel enjoying his breakfast with her father.
‘Was he supposed to leave already?
Then why is he sitting with Dad’ “Eveline, come and join us for breakfast.” Jonathan’s voice drew Eveline out of her astonishment, and she gave her father a puzzled expression.
She was still processing what had happened and why Gabriel was here and not at his place when she noticed him turn and smile at her.
“Eve, come take a seat,” he urged, patting the chair next to him.
Eveline fidgeted and moved slowly towards them, eventually settling on the chair Gabriel had pulled for her.
“Gabriel told me you were sleeping, so I didn’t bother asking Susan to wake you up, but I guess you woke up,” Jonathan added, causing Eveline to frown in confusion before shooting a look at Gabriel, who sat unconcerned.
“How did he know I was sleeping?” she said, shifting her glance back to Jonathan.
Eveline knew Gabriel slept with her the other night, but her father was not supposed to know because he was gone when she woke up.
Jonathan paused, his gaze drawn to Gabriel, a smile on his lips, and added, “I forgot to tell you, I asked Gabriel to stay for the night yesterday because I was concerned about my return from work.” “…” “You were supposed to stay with me?” she inquired, giving Gabriel a perplexed look.
He nodded.
“Yes, but by the time I came, you were sleeping, so I couldn’t tell you.” Gabriel lied on her face, leaving Eveline stunned.
