Rebirth of Billionaire's Wife - Chapter 236
Chapter 236: I was bribed Chapter 236: I was bribed A car swooshes by the road, rattling the dried leaves from the ground.
A heavy stillness descended between Eveline and Gabriel.
While Gabriel waited to hear from Eveline, the latter remained quiet.
If he could guess, she appeared to be thinking about something, but the question had yet to be put at him.
Gabriel decided to do it himself once enough time had elapsed and she had not spoken a word.
“You didn’t ask me, where are we going?” Gabriel inquired, finally noting her stature change.
Eveline turned to gaze at Gabriel, straightening slightly before fully turning to face him.
“I will, but first let me tell you something,” she added, causing him to scowl in anticipation.
Eveline paused for a while, her eyes twitching with concern as she gently flicked her look to Gabriel and added, “Dad came to meet me yesterday, but he left after seeing the door locked from inside.” “So?” Gabriel remembers someone attempting to unlock the door, but it was locked, and after a few failed efforts, it stopped.
Eveline blinked, finding his statements ludicrous, wondering if he still didn’t understand.
“It indicates he must believe something is wrong with me.
I’ve never locked the door.
Dad has a habit of visiting me after I fall asleep.
But when he couldn’t get in, he asked Aunt Susan, and she lied about me sleeping early,” she exclaimed in one breath.
“…” “But aren’t you locking the door every since I joined you to bed?” Eveline:”Blinks” “Oh yes, then does it mean there’s nothing for me to worry about?” She asked, and Gabriel took a long breath.
He then cupped her face and kissed her lips.
“Eve, your father is not aware of anything.
So relax, and even if he demands an explanation, I will accept responsibility.
I don’t mind marrying you.” Eveline thought Gabriel had suddenly sprouted two horns on his head.
“Marriage?
Where did that topic come from?
Responsibility?
Is he kidding me?
“Why should he be responsible for me?” She hastily snatched his hand away and looked aside.
“You are thinking way too ahead.” Gabriel raised his brow, amused by her discomfort with the prospect of them getting married.
“You do realize we are eventually going to get married?” He asked.
“Yes, but not now, so stop blabbing incoherent words,” she spat, her cheeks turning scarlet with embarrassment.
“Okay, but first, stop blushing.” Eveline glared at him, causing him to chuckle.
“Anyway, can we get back to what I asked you earlier?
You don’t want to know where we are going?” He reiterated the prior inquiry.

Eveline shook her head and nodded.
“Stefan discovered some information about your mother’s health history, but not from the hospital where she was supposed to be treated, but from the one where she was actually treated prior to her death.” His words hit a chord in her throat, and her eyelashes fluttered in anticipation.
Eveline’s heart constricted.
Deep down, she wanted everything to be a lie.
Whatever Kaden said was just an accusation he leveled against her father due to their neglect.
However, she couldn’t believe that all was possible.
She simply nodded when she heard him, and they arrived at the hospital shortly after.
Gabriel and Eveline were astonished to see her mother being treated in one of the hospital’s smallest rooms.
It appears to be a local establishment with inadequate facilities.
After exchanging glances, they exited the car and walked towards the hospital.
“Stefan has emailed me the information for the doctor who treated Aunt Erna.
It won’t be difficult for us to get to him,” Gabriel stated as they made their way to the reception area and asked for Doctor Bernard.
The lady glanced at the two skeptically before instructing them to wait before making a call.
Eveline’s eyes remained fixed on the receptionist while she spoke on the phone, before hanging up and motioning for them to proceed.
Something was strange about the way she looked at them, but Eveline didn’t mind and went to the doctor’s office.
**** [Inside] “So who is the patient here?” Dr.
Bernard inquired as he saw the two people in front of him.
“We are not here to check ourselves, but to inquire about something important related to a patient you treated years ago.” Eveline got straight to the point, leaving the doctor perplexed.
“I am sorry but I cannot remember whom you are talking about.” Bernard stuttered a little since he considered the folks too influential for his taste.
They intimidated him, so he became careful.
“There’s nothing to be scared of, Doctor.
We are merely here to find some answers,” Eveline remarked, motioning Gabriel to whip out his phone and show him Erna’s photo.
“We have information about this patient being treated under your supervision, but the reason is not specified, so there are no records of her presence here,” Gabriel inquired, and the man’s face paled as he saw Erna’s photo.
He gazed at the two with terror as he remembered the past.
“W-Who are you two, and what are you talking about?
I’ve never treated this lady,” he denied, alarming Eveline and Gabriel.
“So you don’t know here; that’s what you are trying to say?” Eveline enquired, and Bernard agreed.
“Okay, if that’s what you say, then I guess we must call the cops disclosing the illegal activities you carry behind this shabby, small hospital.” Bernard’s face became pale when he watched Gabriel pull out his phone and make a call.
“You still have a chance to save yourself before your crimes are revealed,” Eveline used the opportunity to threaten the individual.
She just had to keep pressing his button until he gave up.
Beep..
“Yes, officer Et-” “WAIT!
“I will tell you everything.” Bernard shouted, stopping Gabriel from saying anything else, and the call was swiftly terminated.
“Spill,” he whispered, as Bernard dropped his eyes in shame.
“Yes, I know this lady and I was the one who treated her,” he added, keeping his eyes low.
“What condition she was suffering and why there is no record of her condition mentioned in your data history?” Eveline queried, her patience fading with each passing second.
As they got closer to the answers, her heart was racing as if something bad was about to happen from him.
Bernard looked at Eveline, confused.”She didn’t suffer any condition; in fact, she was brought here after she was shot.” The revelation surprised both Gabriel and Eveline.
“Shot?” she whispered, unable to find the words.
“Yes, she was taken here after being shot right in the heart.
The lady bled so heavily that we couldn’t save her.” Eveline’s entire world remains still as she continues to hear more.
‘So Kaden was correct.
Her mother was actually killed.
“Then why didn’t you mention her death on the hospital records?” Gabriel inquired, seeing Eveline’s stillness.
They needed to get this man to spill the beans so they could escape the premises.
“I couldn’t,” the man mumbled, staring at Gabriel nervously.
“What do you mean, why couldn’t you?” Gabriel shouted, sensing something fishy.
The man continued to hesitate, but when he saw Gabriel’s broody gaze, he started sweating.
“I was bribed,” he finally confessed, leaving them both startled.
“And who was the one to bribe you?” This time, Eveline was the one who asked.
Her eyes were fixed on the man, and the following word he said tugged the earth beneath her feet.
