Rebirth of Billionaire's Wife - Chapter 255
Chapter 255: Maybe I am not worthy Chapter 255: Maybe I am not worthy Everything seemed so serene until a soothing yet aching voice woke her from the slumber.
Ella had been unconscious for a while, with Stefan repeatedly calling out her name.
She wanted to sleep, but the desperation in that appeal roused her, and she gradually opened her eyes.
Ella felt something cold rest on her forehead, and her body hurt.
What was wrong with her?
she pondered as a hot liquid dropped on her face and she stared at the man who was silently crying while helping her.
“Stefan,” she said, her voice thick and hoarse, her throat hurting at the small lift in her tone.
Ella’s tongue felt dry owing to a lack of water, yet the name came smoothly from her mouth as she attempted to reach for him.
“Do not talk.
The doctor has asked you to relax.” Stefan sounded clogged, as if he’d been crying for quite some time.
But his hands never ceased washing the fire from her skin.
It was then she noticed she had a fever.
Ella remembered crying and pouring her heart out to Stefan, telling him about her entire existence.
The sorrow in her heart intensified tenfold as she spoke about every instance.
Everything in her body and mind felt fatigued, and she couldn’t remember what happened when she lost her vision.
“How long have I been out?” she said, attempting to sit but Stefan refused.
“I told you couldn’t.
You are burning,” his voice grew louder, and she stopped acting recklessly and resumed lying down.
Ella attempted to get Stefan’s attention by repeatedly looking at him.
She could see that the top of his nose was red and his eyes were puffy from tears.
What was she thinking when she asked him if he would abandon her, while he had been looking after her as if his life depended on her?
After cleaning her, Stefan strolled into the bathroom and returned after washing his hands.
“Let me check if your fever has dropped even by a number,” he mumbled, immediately pulling out a thermometer from the first-aid bag and asking her to open her mouth.
Ella’s passing out was an unexpected event that made Stefan extremely concerned about what had happened to her.
Her lack of response panicked him, so he called the doctor, who subsequently confirmed it was the fever that caused her to faint.
The doctor advised her to have complete bed rest and prescribed some medication.
Stefan had never seen Ella so vulnerable and feeble, and it shattered his heart.
He was upset because she allowed her pain break her down to the point that her brain couldn’t handle it, and he wondered how deeply she had been damaged by it.
The click of the thermometer broke the silence between them, and he removed it from her mouth to check it.
“It is better than before,” he murmured.

Stefan had been keeping damp wipes on her forehead to lower the temperature, and after much difficulty, her fever eventually decreased a little.
Ella was sorry in herself for causing Stefan problems, yet his presence was what she needed the most.
She realised when, while watching him, she fell asleep again, only to be woken up an hour later with her entire body sweating.
“It is hot,” she muttered.
“That’s because your fever has subsided,” she heard Stefan say from the side.
Ella opened her eyes to see him still sitting next to her on the bed.
“How long you have been sitting there?” She inquired, this time ignoring his worry and assisting herself to sit up.
Stefan positioned the cushion behind her for a gentle lean before turning to pick up the bowl of soup he had made for her.
Ella furrowed her brow, glancing at the soup before returning her gaze to Stefan.
“Did you make it?” she inquired.
“Yes, and I’m not sure if it’s to your taste, but it smelled delicious when I was preparing it,” he replied, putting her mind at ease.
Ella gave him a doubtful look as he blew the soup into the spoon, pushing it closer to her mouth.
“Aaa..” he said, as if she were the small child he was watching over.
Ella let out a resigned sigh and placed the spoon in her lips, allowing the soup’s warm yet flavorful taste to slip down her throat.
“Hmm, it’s really delicious,” she responded, agreeing with his assessment.
“Told you,” he replied.
Ella said nothing after that and allowed him to feed her.
Once finished, he pulled out the pill and gave it to her.
“Is my fever already gone?
Why do I still have to take them?” Ella asked, evidently dissatisfied with the tablets in his fingers.
“It is not completely gone, but it has improved because the doctor gave you an injection.
You still need to finish the course,” he stated angrily.
Ella instantly saw Stefan in a new light.
A instructor who was directing her without hearing her out.
Despite her dislike for medicines, Ella persisted to accommodate him and took the medicine before passing him the class.
She then scooted slightly and requested him to join her in bed.
Stefan, with no hesitation, followed her silent gesture and hope into the bed and sat beside her.
“You don’t have to ask anything?” She inquired, her gaze hopefully directed at him.
Now that he had witnessed the effects of her previous traumas, she wanted to know what he thought of her.
Was she still a strong girl in his eyes, or an imposter pretending to be someone else?
Stefan didn’t say anything, just stared at her.
Whatever she said surprised him, yet the words she had spoken before left him dejected.
“Why do you think I’d abandon you, Dove?” he questioned, his gaze completely fixed on her.
Ella gasped at his dark look, which wrenched her gut with anxiety.
She could tell he was unhappy, but did she have the right to ask him?
“Maybe I am not worthy now that you know how shallow I am,” she replied, hardening his expression.
Stefan clenched his jaw, irritated by her continual remarks about herself.
She has always had low self-esteem.
Even after he constantly declared how much he loves her, she continues to question him.
Were his words ever understandable to her, or did she simply try to oblige him because he said so?
“I am toxic for you, Stefan.
A girl who has experienced trauma, who constantly doubts herself, and who lacks the ability to stand up for herself.
She let others govern her mind, as if she lacked a vision of herself.
You keep telling me you aren’t trustworthy enough to share my burden.
But it has always been this way because I have carried my own difficulties on my shoulders, tackling them with every ounce of courage I could summon. Yes, I have shortcomings because I am afraid of others’ judgment.
I’m afraid that if my fears are realized, my dignity will shatter.
The fear of being a bastard child taints my existence,” she finished as tears streamed down her face.
Ella had always wanted to confront her mother, but knowing how much she suffered while upbringing her alone, she couldn’t bring herself to ask her anything.
She knew he life they have dealt with and questioning her would only make things worse.
But now that people from her past have returned to haunt her, her worries have risen again.
Stefan could feel her words pierce his heart like a scalpel, tearing through his body until it bled with her.
How could he take away all the agony she has been carrying in her heart?
How can he make her forget everything while punishing those who dare to instill those traumas into her?
Her anxieties were deeper than he could have imagined.
It wasn’t something that developed a few days ago, however she had carried them with her since childhood.
How could he continue to push her into something that required patience and time to open up?
Stefan, unable to see her cry, turned and hastily drew her into his arms.
“I apologize, but please do not cry.
It hurts, Dove,” Stefan screamed as well.
“Tell me who has wronged you, and I will punish them all.
They do not deserve to have an idyllic existence after destroying someone else.
Tell me what occurred to you at the grocery shop.
Not a word left unsaid,” he inquired, his voice trembling but firm.
Ella shivered in his grip, gradually pulling back, her eyes nervously searching into his as she opened her mouth to speak…
…
“So it’s been a while since he is trying to get in touch with you and what’s his name, again?
Stefan asked.
Ella was unsure whether Stefan was angry or not because he calmness was scaring her, but she decided to remain cool and answer him instead.
“Jack” she whispered, and his countenance darkened instantly.
