Chapter 28: Truth

“That’s the only punishment I have for you. Take it or opt for the dare. The decision is yours,” Gabriel firmly stated, giving Stefan a hard time in the process.

While Daniel was enjoying the almost crying look on Stefan’s face, Eveline felt bad for her brother.

“All right, I will finish the assignment,” declared Stefan, like a child who was being wronged by his best friend.

While Stefan scowled at the Winston brothers for his disappointment, Daniel cheered, pleased with the outcome.

“My turn,” Eveline said, and spun the bottle slowly.

Eveline stared at the object, mentally praying that the bottle would not stop at her and guess what she was indeed lucky however the one the bottle pointed turned out to be Gabriel instead.

“YESS!!” Stefan clapped his hand in victory now that it was Gabriel’s turn to face the challenge.

Ignoring the triumphant smile on Stefan’s face, Gabriel waited for him to toss the chits and pick one.

“Daniel” he said reading the name.

Daniel straightened up before looking at his brother and posing the question, “Truth or Dare?”

“Truth?” Gabriel answered immediately, as though he had already made up his mind.

Stefan scoffed shaking his head helplessly, while Eveline was left curious with how confident Gabriel looked.

“So, brother, is there someone you regret hurting?” Daniel asked with a wink.

Stefan and Daniel were both aware that Gabriel had long since realized that he had misunderstood Eveline; nevertheless, Gabriel was finding it difficult to apologize.

They had no idea, though, that Gabriel had actually begged for forgiveness and been turned down.

Gabriel turned his gaze at Eveline and his eyes soften at the sight of her serene face.

“Yes, but I think I have a long way to go before I can be forgiven,” he said.

As Gabriel spoke those words, staring directly into Eveline’s eyes, her heart skipped a beat. Her cheeks began to heat at his intense stare and she immediately looked away.

“Well, that is intriguing now. Would you mind telling us from whom you have to seek forgiveness?” Daniel inquired, even though he was aware that Gabriel was referring to Eveline.

Shooting a glare at brother, who was trying to pull his leg, Gabriel declined, “No.” bursting the excited bubble in a second.

Daniel pouted as they continued to play the game. While Daniel and Stefan were being punished, Eveline had succeeded in trying to accept a much simpler dare from Stefan.

“My turn” Stefan said as he spun the bottle and it stopped at Eveline.

“All right, sister, here you go again.” He then shuffled the chits and throwing them in the air before they landed on the floor.

Eveline picked one chit and opened it. Her eyes widened slightly, and she turned from it to face Gabriel.

The corner of Gabriel’s lips curled into a playful smile that caught Eveline off guard. It was rare to see Gabriel enjoy such stupid game, however the look he gave her made her stomach churn in nervousness.

Eveline was perplexed by the change she had observed in Gabriel.

Despite trying her best not to get swayed by his remark, Eveline couldn’t help but wonder why he was acting the way she had never seen him.

She took a moment to calm her racing heart, closed the chit, set it down, and said, “Gabriel.”

Gabriel’s heart was greatly soothed to hear Eveline call his name, and he asked, “Truth or Dare,” in the softest possible tone.

Eveline:”…”

Daniel:”…”

Stefan:”…”

The entire room fell silent hearing Gabriel’s most gentle tone towards Eveline. It was rare but the look Gabriel passed towards Eveline left everyone shocked.

“Did he just smile?” Daniel whispered at Eveline, but when she didn’t reply, he turned to look at her baffled face and gape.

Eveline sat there dumbstruck. Her mind and body freezing at the sound of his voice and not to forget the gentle look he gave her.

Stefan, who had also just discovered Gabriel’s softer side, clumsily cleared his throat, breaking the awkward silence in the room.

“A-Answer Eve,” he said, startling Eveline out of her reverie as she gave him a confused glance and nodded.

Though Eveline’s thoughts were still disorganized, she knew that this was only a passing phase and that Gabriel would soon revert to his typical demeanor.

“Truth,” Eveline said without much thought before composing her mind.

Her heart was racing with the kind of emotions she did not want to think about, so all she wanted to do was finish this turn and move on to the next one.

Gabriel sensed the change in Eveline’s expression and his heart constrict at her coldness.

He instantly thought of Eveline and how she must have felt when he had given her the cold shoulder, hardly listening to her and acting as though he did not care.

A pang of guilt again crossed his heart and he asked,” Why did you suddenly stopped liking me?”

Eveline was taken aback by Gabriel’s question because she had not anticipated him asking about it. It had always been clear that he never liked her however she was the one who did everything to make space in his heart.

“Eveline, I wish I had never met you.”

His words ring in her mind, burning her eyes with stinging tears.

Eveline would’ve passed the question and accepted a punishment, but the void in her heart was so big that no matter how much she tried to forget, it reminded her of his indifference.

“Because I became aware that the thing I was pursuing was beyond my grasp.”

Gabriel squinted his eyes as he felt a sharp pain inside his chest and his face contorted. Each an every words were like knife stabbing right into his heart, making it hard for him to breath.

“Was it because I doubted you?” Gabriel questioned, struggling to process with her words.

Gabriel had never been affected by anyone before, but hearing Eveline, it made him realize of the power she held on him.

“I am not obliged to answer you” Eveline dismissed saying anything further and got up.

“It’s time for dinner. I will head over to ask Susan to set up our meal.” Eveline abruptly turned and left the study, shocking everyone with her outburst.
