Rebirth of Billionaire's Wife - Chapter 286
Chapter 286: The only regret Chapter 286: The only regret Following the brief meeting, everyone went their own way, leaving Erna and Jonathan alone in their room.
Jonathan closed the door and turned to face his wife, who was delightful after meeting her people.
He understood how difficult it was for Erna to avoid them, but his hands were constrained, and he wanted to protect her at all costs.
When he dared to take her hand, he understood what he was getting himself into.
But he never regretted it since his love for her outweighed his responsibilities as a Miller.
He approached Erna slowly and sat next to her on the bed.
“You are beautiful.” His eyes never left her, but she did detect the glint of regret in them and slowly reached out to caress his face.
“And I’m sorry for putting you through this separation,” he said, his remorse overwhelming him till his eyes welled up with tears.
Erna drew Jonathan into an embrace.
“I never blamed you for that.
I understand why you did it,” she replied, touching his somewhat grey hair.
Erna and Jonathan had loved each other since they were young, but they never declared their feelings for each other for fear of ruining their friendship if someone rejected either of them.
But things changed when his parents unexpectedly announced her marriage to his elder brother Jedrick, altering the dynamics of their relationship in an instant.
Fortunately, it proved to be a watershed moment, as they realized they couldn’t get away from each other and couldn’t envision any of them with alternative partners.
But who could have predicted that their love would turn into a life-long nightmare that ruined everything in an instant?
“Do you regret loving me?” Erna said abruptly, leading Jonathan to withdraw and shake his head in denial. “Never.
I’ve never regretted loving you.
The only regret I ever had was that I was not strong enough to stand up to my brother.
He misled us all into thinking he wasn’t harmed, but it was all a ruse to exact his retribution on us.” Jonathan regretted failing to see through his brother’s lie, as Jedrick had never made them feel that way.
When he killed his parents, he proved to them that he was not their blood and violated their trust.
He was an unlucky son who couldn’t even provide them with an appropriate burial site since he fled to avoid being the next victim.
He considered himself a coward, but he knew that if he hadn’t done so, Jedrick might have been able to gain all.
As he reflected, he reasoned that perhaps his father had gotten wind of Jedrick’s scheme, or else he would have modified the will and listed all of the land in his name.
Even the organization he claims to own was officially registered in his name, which is why he wants him assassinated so he can take over everything.
“But I am the cause of all your troubles.
If I hadn’t pressured you, Jedrick might not have done what he did.
He even killed your parents because of me,” she wept, recalling all of the issues they had after she eloped with Jonathan.
Never blame yourself.
Did you forget what Dad said?
He always wanted you as his daughter-in-law, regardless of whether it was me or Jedrick.” Jonathan remembered his father’s remarks and grinned.

He was his best friend, with whom he shared everything and looked up to, and his passing left him feeling empty and out of place, but his encouraging words always helped him get through it.
The couple continued to hold each other’s arms till Erna spoke up.
“Are you angry that I told Eveline everything?” She gazed up into his brown eyes and watched him shake his head.
“I am pleased you did not tell her everything.
I do not want her to know the truth, which will shatter her heart.
No matter what, she is our daughter,” he whispered, pulling back into his embrace.
Eveline may have discovered Jedrick’s reality, but there was still something about him that she did not know.
The silence between them was broken by a knock on the door, and they saw Eveline enter in.
“I hope I didn’t disturb you two?” She queried skeptically as she noticed her parents hugging each other.
“Oh, no, not at all,” Erna said, pulling back and patting the spot next to her on the bed, beckoning for Eveline to join them.
It had been a while since the father-daughter pair had spoken, so she decided to give them some space now that no one was there.
As quiet fell between them, Erna beckoned for Jonathan to speak out rather than remain silent.
Receiving her silent warning, he nodded and decided to speak.
“Are you not going to talk with your dad, princess?” He questioned, turning his head slightly as he looked at Eveline on the opposite side.
She never looked up, as if thinking about how she would react.
Her silence widened the emptiness in Jonathan’s heart.”Then I guess I must apologize for being cruel in keeping you away from your mother,” Eveline said, shooting her eyes at her father, who jumped up and was about to grab his ears, but she interrupted him.
“Stop, Dad.
“Never do that again,” her angry voice interrupted Jonathan in mid-sentence.
“Yes, I’m upset, but I don’t blame you.
I feel that whatever you did was for a reason.
But by doing this, you make me feel wrong.
Eveline couldn’t stop crying and immediately hurried to hug her father.
“I can’t stop talking to dad.
You are everything; how can I even think about it?” Eveline never really blamed Jonathan because she thought he was doing nothing wrong.
And now that she knew the truth, she recognized how much he had to go through on his own, which fueled his need to protect his family from the threats that hung over them like black shadows.
Erna smiled as she stared at them, but worry crept into her heart, causing it to quiver, and she lost the brightness in her eyes.
