“But you didn’t tell me what you’re doing here or where Dad is.

How did he leave you alone at this hour?” Eveline repeated her prior inquiry.

Erna stopped, letting her words sink in.

I couldn’t sleep.

I thought maybe a walk would help.” Eveline furrowed her brow and crossed her hand against her chest.

“And why are you unable to sleep?

Are you not feeling well, or are you worried about something?” Even though Erna’s smile might conceal her pain, Eveline, as an observer, could see that her mother was concealing something.

Erna let out an uneasy laugh.

“Why should I stress?

“I’m fine,” she replied, evading the questioning stare.

Erna couldn’t let her daughter see through her lies.

She continued to smile.

“Come on, let’s get inside or you’ll catch a cold,” Erna tried to dismiss her fears.

Eveline furrowed her brow but refused to comply, instead entering the house with her mother.

Eveline paused as she approached the door to her room.

“Mom,” she yelled, pausing Erna on her spot and looking seriously at her.

“If something bothers you, please do not hesitate to speak out.
