Chapter 38: Have you ever thought of quiting your job?
Eveline collapsed onto the bed, exhausted, and shut her eyes.
Following her name registration in the volleyball match, the students were instructed to assemble on the volleyball court for practice.
To enable boys and girls to participate in the same sport and support their respective classes, the college organized a combined group this time.
Many students were excited by the novelty, but her mood soured when she discovered Tiffany had also registered her name in the same games. Fortunately, she avoided social interaction with anyone due to the controversy that occurred this morning, as many students also declined to speak with her.
“I really need to start taking care of myself.” This sudden practice ruined my body,” snorted Eveline as she flipped, lying on her stomach.
Gabriel canceled their class for the evening, saying he would tutor her at home because of the practice.
“Oh God, please stop being so mean to me.” Eveline cried as she didn’t get the chance to refuse him and now Gabriel would be here in one hour.
Like a whining child, she slammed her legs and continued to curse her fate. It had been impossible to stay away from Gabriel at the college; he wanted to be with her in her house too.
“Argh,” she screamed, strongly hitting the bed.
“Young Miss, what’s wrong with you? Why do you act as though you are under a spell? Eveline jerked to sit up on the bed as Susan’s voice caught her attention.
Her action caused her hair to become tangled like a bird’s nest, making her look distressed exactly as Susan had described.
Possessed.
Susan’s jaw dropped as she stood like a pole, struck by the scene unfolding before her eyes. Her young miss was acting strange, raising her concern that she couldn’t fathom her thoughts.
Upon noticing her nanny’s shocked expression, Eveline jumped off the bed and hurried over to the dressing table.
Her mouth fell open when she realized how she looked, and she quickly turned to face Susan.
“I need to inform Master. “Our Young Miss is possessed,” Susan silently murmured to herself.
Before Susan could make a move outside her room, Eveline stopped her.
“Aunt Susan, I am not possessed. What’s wrong with you?” The nanny was still worried as Eveline stood in front of her, her hair still spread out like a bird’s nest.
“But, t-this-”
When Susan looked up, it soon dawned on Eveline and she quickly set her hair down in a proper way.
“See, nothing’s wrong with me. I am absolutely fine. So please don’t go and tell Dad anything.” Eveline pleaded with a pitiful look that finally put a rein in Susan’s assumption.
Susan calmed down upon realizing that she had only overreacted earlier and that her young Miss was in perfect condition.
Susan turned and headed back to her bed, dismissing all the unwanted thoughts, and said, “Young Miss, I got you some snacks. It must have been exhausting to be in college, so change quickly and grab them. Tell me what else you need, and I will get it for you. Susan smiled turning attention back towards Eveline.
Eveline could not help but be moved by Susan’s unwavering attention towards her. She wasn’t just a nanny, but someone she considered a mother figure. She barely missed her mother anymore because of her presence, she now had someone to confide in and discuss her issues with.
Slowly making her way towards Susan, Eveline smiled and gently reached to hold her hand. It always made her curious to know about her after she suddenly disappeared from her life.
Regardless of what life threw at her, Susan had always been there. The only person who knew that Eveline had suffered greatly following the scandal that forced her and Gabriel into that forced marriage was her.
However, once she was gone, Eveline found herself alone. She did not speak much and continued to live in the hopes that one day she would be able to prove her innocence. However, that day never came, and instead, she was slowly approaching the edge of the world because her mind would not allow her to think clearly and she was dependent on medications to stay sane.
The thought of finally being able to see her the moment she opened her, was more than a blessing for her. But the question still lingers, will she leave her again?
Will she be spared from that tragic death, or will her fate repeat itself?

Her nightmares were an incessant reminder that would startle her out of sleep and would not go away. The mere thought of being pushed off the building would still give her goosebumps.
Sensing that Eveline was lost in her own thoughts, Susan called her out “Young Miss”
Breaking out of her reverie, Eveline gave Susan a dazed look before gathering her courage to ask, “Aunt Susan, have you ever thought of quitting your job?”
Susan was a diligent worker who gave them all of her time and attention, neglecting her family, who were waiting for her at home. She once heard the servant gossip about how Susan’s husband would beat her after getting drunk, and how she preferred staying here more than in her house.
But then Eveline was reminded of the girl who once came with her. She had not seen her face again after that day, so she quickly forgot what she had looked like.
Eveline’s heart was touched by the memory of the young child referring to Susan as “Mom,” and she began to gradually ease her pain at not being able to see her mother.
Eveline eventually went outside the house that day and played with the girl after spending the entire day alone in her room and giving everyone the runaround. She recalled feeling better despite the girl maintaining her distance from her while playing.
‘What was her name?’ Eveline pondered but failed to recall her name. If only there was a chance then maybe she would like to meet her again.
Susan stood rendered speechless, staring into Eveline’s expectant eyes.
What was she supposed to say?
Her job here was her only means of avoiding the reality she would have to deal with at home. So no, she never once considered leaving her position. Because the people here had trusted her with their child, and this house had given her peace.
“How am I supposed to leave my daughter alone?” Susan said as tears welled in her eyes.
She is glad to take care of Eveline and to be there for her. She would feel so fulfilled by it that she would bravely return home once her workday was over.
Life was hard back at him as the debt collector would keep showing at her door, asking for money.
However her she was stress free, enjoying her work. But more than that, she was happy because she was able to look after her young Miss who considered her a mother figure.
