Chapter 42: Great deal of responsibility
“So, grow up and let go,” Eveline said for the last time,
“It was not me who told Mom about us,” Gabriel said, giving her a perplexed look. “It’s Danny,” he said.
“But you are the one who said it in front of Dad,” Eveline scowled. “In a sense, you did act childish inside, so it does not really matter,” she remarked.
Gabriel couldn’t understand what was Eveline’s problem. Despite his attempts to defend himself with reasoning, she continued to hold him accountable for the internal events.
“Now don’t keep standing here and leave.” Eveline groaned as her sleep started to take hold. “I have to go and sleep,” she said.
It had been this way for a while now. Eveline always went to bed when she was tired because she knew that as soon as the nightmares started, she would wake up and the sleep would be long gone.
She turned and left Gabriel stranded outside the house without waiting for his response and closed the door right in his face.
Gabriel couldn’t only stare at the closed door in disbelief before he made his way into the car and drove off.

Stefan wept and embraced his mother, making his father frown. “Oh, Mom, I missed you so much,” he said with a dramatic tone.
“Of course, you will miss her; after all, she saved your ass from getting beaten,” Marcus said as he watched his son vent in front of his wife, making him appear like a villain who is pursuing his freedom.
“Hold on, honey—you are aware that Stefan has always been a mama’s boy. Oh my poor child, did your father give you a lot of trouble?” Nancy continued to stroke her son’s back, ignoring her husband’s comment.
Nancy’s only son is such a spoiler that he still acts like a child in front of her and constantly complains about his father.
“Darling, I didn’t do anything. It’s him who ignored my calls throughout the day,” Marcus said, recalling how his assistant kept on reaching out for Stefan, but the man simply turned off his phone after he refused to answer his calls.
Stefan looked at his father cautiously and pulled back from his mother’s embrace.
“Stefan, why would you do that? You said you would accept the internship, so why the sudden resistance?” Nancy inquired.
Since this was the final year and soon Stefan would graduate, Marcus wanted his son to do an internship in their company just to get aware of the working environment their before he took the position of CEO.
Stefan sighed and gave his mother a nod.
“See, this was so simple, yet you ran after my child like a raging bull,” Nancy scolded, making Marcus pout.
Nancy had originally planned to arrive tomorrow, but she had to cancel her plans after hearing her husband’s incessant expressions of how much he missed her. She then had to head back home a day before surprising them both.
Marcus put his arm around Nancy, kissed her on the cheeks, and mumbled, “I miss you so much, honey. You know it’s too painful to see this son of yours every time after coming home.”
Stefan shot his father a glare, sneering at him as he now behaved like a lost puppy. He questioned why anyone would only ever love one person. It is not like he grumbled or wished for his parents’ divorce or anything, because that was the only thing that gave him hope for unconditional love.
However, he took a unique approach to love because he had yet to meet someone who genuinely liked him for himself. Sure, he enjoyed hooking up with different girls because he was aware that they were only interested in his attractiveness and money, but aside from that, they never once made an effort to see him as a regular person.
Making his way towards his room, Stefan slumped on his bed, staring blankly at the wall above. He was aware that his life would soon change because he would have to take over the company and carry on his parents’ legacy, but was he prepared for such a great deal of responsibility?
Stefan was afraid of growing up, but he knew that he would have to do it eventually because, as his father had once said, “Life is not about fun and freedom; you have responsibilities that you must carry throughout your life.”
Taking a deep breath, Stefan sighed and slowly closed his eyes, ready to soon embrace the responsibility he signed up for.
‘Internship.’ he muttered to himself before letting sleep take over his tired mind.

Susan got up the following morning as usual and got to work, preparing the food and cleaning up the mess her husband had made in the house the night before while he was intoxicated.

When Susan got home yesterday, she saw the horrific scene where some thugs were abusing Jacob. To spare him the pain, he gave them some money that she had saved for Tiffany’s education and when she confronted him, he started destroying everything around her, yelling and beating her.
To stop Tiffany from seeing such a heartbreaking sight, she locked her inside her room and let alone handle the whole situation until he finally collapsed on the floor, passing out.
“I need to do something before everything slips from my hand,” Susan muttered as she stood by the kitchen counter.
“Why do you not just kick him out? He is nothing but a hassle for us, Mom.” Tiffany angrily said as she left the room, her eyes fixed on Jacob dozing on the ground.
“He got this the other day and you were concerned about where you lost the money.” Susan slammed her hand on the kitchen counter as she continued to stare at Tiffany.
Susan’s face was marred by a confused expression as she stared at the lottery ticket.
“Mom, it was too much yesterday; everyone was gawking at us in disgust. I understand that you continue to hope that this man will change, but I assure you that day will never arrive. Someone who is addicted to alcohol and gambling can never change. So please let him stay here and move out, finding a better place where he wouldn’t find us,” Tiffany stated as a matter of fact.
