Chapter 53: The answer would be the same

It was late in the night and Eveline couldn’t find her sleep. It wasn’t because of the bed or a new place. She was used to sleeping here, but tonight something felt different.

Not only did a long time pass, but she also did not experience a sudden urge to sleep, nor did she have any nightmares that kept her awake.

Simply put, she couldn’t sleep.

Eveline got up and sat on the bed, staring blankly at the wall ahead of her. She continued mentally counting numbers, but each time, Gabriel’s controlling actions toward her were brought to mind.

Just when she thought it was enough, she climbed off the bed and made her way out of the room.

Eveline desperately needed a breath of fresh air, and the rooftop offered the only place she could find the tranquility she was currently seeking.

She moved upstairs quietly and out onto the terrace. The moment the cool breeze softly hit her skin, she closed her eyes, taking in the feeling that soothed her mind.

“This is better,” she muttered, under her breath as a smile slowly made its way on her lips.

“Yes, this is better.” She heard a voice abruptly reach her chords. She opened her eyes to see Gabriel sitting on the long swing, a short distance away from her position.

The smile on her face vanished and she stared at the boy with the utmost detest.

“Are you a ghost or something? Why do you appear out of nowhere?” Eveline questioned her, her hands crossed over her chest.

For an instant, she thought everything was under control—that is, until Gabriel showed up and ruined whatever peace she had managed to find.

Gabriel patted the area next to him, smiling at that adorable frown and beckoning her to join him.

He laughed, obligingly ignoring the occasional frown that marred her face, “I will let you know if you sit with me.” he said.

Eveline rolled her eyes and sighed. She knew there was no way she would be able to stand here silently until Gabriel was there. She forced herself to join him on the swing, despite her lack of interest.

“You used to enjoy sitting on it,” he said, glancing in her direction.

“Just as long as I was the one using it,” she informed him.

Eveline was the most beloved kid so that pampering somehow made her a stubborn kid among all of them. Though they did not always like it, they followed her instructions when she occasionally gave them a hard time getting things done her way.

“Yeah, but since I am seated next to you, there is no choice anymore,” Gabriel added with a smile, putting an end to her indirect taunt.

“You were not so talkative before, what suddenly got into you that you do not stop irking me with your words?” Eveline asked, squinting her eyes as she carefully observed Gabriel.

“That is because either I never found someone to confide in or, if I did, I ignored her,” he said with his eyes fixated on her.

Eveline’s eyes hardened at his bold remark, but he was too late to realize it. She was no longer that desperate Eveline who would run after him for the slightest smile he passed at her.

When Eveline didn’t say a word, Gabriel reached out and grabbed her hand, startling her with his action.

“I genuinely want us to return to how it was, Eve. I know you are upset because I did not trust you, but this time, I swear, I will not ignore you,” he said, giving a light squeeze to her hand.

Eveline’s eyes shot wide at Gabriel, and her breath caught in her throat. His words swirled around in her head, tangles of thoughts like a web of spiders.

Gabriel smiled when he failed to understand himself, but what hurt him in the process was the indifferent look in Eveline’s eyes.

There was a lack of empathy towards him and that broke his heart every time she looked at him like that.

It reminded him of the dream he saw where she looked with those empty gazes while she fell off. It struck him squarely in the abdomen, sending shivers down his spine.

He forced a smile, though the look she gave him made his stomach turn. “You can take your time, but I will not stop pestering you,” he said.

It was like she had already given up on him and to keep himself from getting swayed by that reality, he quickly tried to change the topic.

“I had a question for you,” he said, changing his expression from one of agony to one of confusion, confusing Eveline with the abrupt change.

Firmly gripping her hand, he leaned in to inquire, “Is it true that you broke into my system to stalk me?”

As soon as Gabriel said those words, Eveline’s face turned ghostly white.

‘How did he find that?’ she asked herself but soon a face crossed her mind and her expression darkened.

‘Damn you, brother Stefan’ she cursed the boy behind her achievement but didn’t voice it out loud.

“W-Why would I do that?” Eveline fumbled on her words and quickly retreated her gaze from his piercing one.

“How would I know?” he said, the corner of his lips curling amusingly.

Since Eveline had no filters, it was simple to read her, so when he noticed that she was growing anxious, he chose to tease her even more.

Eveline gave Gabriel a fleeting glance before clearing her throat, saying, “I think I should go and sleep.”

“I do not think so until you tell me what you were looking for with my system breach,” Gabriel steadfastly stated. Now he was determined to find out why she was stalking him so covertly.

Eveline felt stuck between running away from Gabriel and keeping the truth hidden, since neither of them would work right now.

If only she had known Gabriel would be so demanding, she never would have allowed herself to stay over.

Gabriel shifted slightly closer to her and muttered, “What happened? You do not have any answers.”

Eveline gaped at Gabriel’s extreme proximity to her. It was obvious how much he was enjoying playing with her by the way his lips curled into a funny smile and his eyes bore expectantly into hers.

As soon as Eveline opened her mouth to speak, Gabriel put his finger on it and cut her off, saying, “You don’t have to hack my system to know about my life because even if you did the answer would be the same….
