Chapter 62: Ends up being the disappointment herself?
[ANNUAL SPORTS DAY]
Students were looking forward to the event the college organized for them. This athletic event gives a lot of students the chance to evaluate their academic performance. Some people played the game seriously, while others just enjoyed the day.
“Did Eveline let you know what sports she plans to play besides volleyball?” Stefan asked, stretching his arms and legs to warm up for the game.
“No,” Gabriel replied grumpily.
Gabriel had tried asking Eveline about it but the girl simply kept her tongue tied. He did not know what was wrong with her, or why she was making such a big deal out of answering his straightforward query. So he decided to drop his question and look forward to what she was up to.
“I will be back,” Gabriel said, excusing himself from the spot, before making his way to the shared sink area.
Turning on the tap, Gabriel was washing his hands when he felt someone join him.
“Best wishes, Gabriel,” Tiffany uttered. putting on a friendly smile while standing next to Gabriel.
For a while, she could see Gabriel, but she was unable to approach him because he was engrossed in conversation with his friend Stefan. But as soon as he excused himself, she just followed him to the sink area, hoping to have a chat with him.
However, Gabriel chose to ignore Tiffany’s words and carried on washing his hands, turning a blind eye. After completing his task, he turned to go, but Tiffany intervened.
“Will you refrain from wishing me luck? I am Eveline’s team, after all,” she remarked, hoping for a sidelong glance from him.
Tiffany regretted being so impetuous, but all she wanted was for Gabriel to despise Eveline and feel sorry for her. If only she had been careful about Gabriel being attentive to her move, then she wouldn’t have done what she did.
The entire time, Gabriel’s expression was void of emotion, but as soon as she said Eveline’s name, his eyes began to soften. He remembered Eveline practicing with such ambition to win the game, and all he wanted was for her to get the fruit of her labor.
Taking a deep breath, Gabriel turned his cold gaze towards Tiffany and said, “I hope you win the game so Eveline is not disappointed. I do not want her to become discouraged.” He then turned to leave, walking past her.
Tiffany’s lips twitched in fury and she balled her fist, firmly digging her nails into her skin until they turned white.
With a menacing snort, Tiffany directed her dark eyes toward Gabriel and whispered, “But what if she ends up being the disappointment herself?”
Darting her eyes from the disappearing figure, Tiffany then turned and walked to the other side with her eyes glistening with amusement and the corner of her lip curled into a smirk.

The volleyball match was scheduled for the afternoon, but Eveline emerged victorious in two other events: long jump and chess.
Confident after defeating her senior, Eveline proceeded to the girls’ changing area, but not before running into Gabriel, who appeared to be anticipating her arrival.
Her expression fell to a deep frown as she saw him standing outside the girls’ changing room with no remorse, despite everyone staring at him and making strange comments.
Then again, did he really care?
Ignoring all her worries, Eveline was about to walk past but he simply blocked her.
“Congratulations,” Gabriel said, his eyes falling on her with utter adoration.
Eveline shot her astonished eyes at Gabriel and noticed the faint yet proud smile lingering on his face.
This wasn’t something Eveline expected coming from Gabriel. Still, the sight mesmerized her. She was not sure why, but she felt proud of herself just thinking about Gabriel appreciating her work.
“T-thank you,” she muttered, covering up the pink flush on her cheek with her gaze downcast.
Gabriel couldn’t help but smile, finding cuteness whenever he saw the flustered look on her face. He took her reaction as a way of letting him know, how much grasp his words held on her.
Taking a step closer to Eveline, Gabriel invaded the little bit of space between them and asked, “Aren’t you going to wish me luck? I have a match to win.”

Eveline gaped at their sudden proximity, her heart quickening as her thoughts turned to the students’ inquisitive looks.
Being the center of attention all the time was embarrassing. But why did she suddenly feel the need to embrace that attention—not from others but from the man standing before her?
Slowly lifting her gaze, Eveline met Gabriel’s deep, intent grey orbs and swallowed. That stare had a captivating quality that left no room for rejection.
They were hypnotizing her in such a way that she was reminded of the moment when she started to notice his beauty for the first time and how she gradually got accustomed to his appearance, making her irrevocably fall in love with him.
“Eve, say something,” Gabriel said, finding her quiet to be bothersome.
Gabriel had never been one to beg for acceptance, but he wanted those things with Eveline. He suddenly started to feel that his life revolved around her, so much so that her approval became very important to him.
Parting her lips, Eveline’s mind was racing—not from her feelings, but from Gabriel’s eager anticipation of her arrival.
What was up with her sudden assurance when he had never given a damn about anything she said?
“Are they going to kiss?” Eveline was abruptly awakened to the gravity of the situation by a voice interrupting her train of thought and quickly took a step back.
“I wish you the best,” she said, averting her gaze as she hurried past him and into the changing room.
“…”
Gabriel was stunned for a moment until someone announced that he was needed on the ground, at which point he swiftly left.
Eveline, in the meantime, stood with her hands clasped over her chest in the empty changing room, her heart thumping against her palm.
She glared down at her chest and said, “Can you please stop freaking?” as it was going to listen to her right away.
Eveline had no idea what happened to her, but it took her a while before she finally found the needed peace and started getting changed for the match.
Just as Eveline turned to walk away, she saw Tiffany entering. When their gazes met, she saw a sinister feeling linger in hers.
Eveline was reminded of the words those girls said and her gaze hardened. She did not know if the man in the video was Tiffany’s father, but she could not just go ask her to talk.
Eveline could not just ruin Tiffany’s mysterious identity, but she would definitely find a way to talk to her about it. But now her only focus was to prepare herself for the game.
Eveline quickly turned and walked out of the room, not realizing that this would be the most difficult day of her life.
