Chapter 65: I thought you knew it
Gracey’s offensive behavior toward a classmate resulted in a one-week suspension from the college and her removal as the class representative.
When word got out to the other students, she became the talk of the college, with everyone accusing her of targeting Tiffany’s reputation and judging her for being a jealous freak.
However, Eveline could not accept this reality because it did not seem to fit well with her mentality.
“Drink some water. I am sure the debate caused your throat to become sore.” Stefan said passing her the water bottle.
Now that the long sports day had finally come to an end, they were standing on the playing field, ready to head home.
While some students found the game exciting, others were discouraged by their defeat. For Eveline, though, it was more than just another bad day that she was unable to attend the celebration.
She still had a couple of victories from the other games she played, despite losing the volleyball match. However, following the events in the dean’s office, Eveline’s sports day turned into the most draining day of the week.
She took the bottle from him and said, “Thank you,” before taking a sip.
Eveline did not see Gabriel anywhere during that time, which piqued her curiosity about his whereabouts.
“Where is Gabriel?” She asked, unable to contain her curiosity.
“Why? Are you missing him already?” Stefan laughed, making Eveline scowl at him.
“Scoff, why would I miss him? I just asked because it’s getting late,” she said, proceeding to sip from the bottle.
Since only Stefan and Tiffany were aware of Eveline’s love for Gabriel, she never took offense at what Stefan said. However, she was much over that love now, and she did not want anyone to keep bringing up that foolishness by teasing her.
As they waited for their departure, Eveline ignored what he was saying and turned to face Daniel and his friends.
“He is in the dean’s office,” Stefan remarked, regaining the silence from Eveline.
The scowl on her face deepened and she gulped the water down her throat. “Why would he go there?” she asked, her voice raspy.
Stefan sneaked a glance at her before going back to doing what he was doing, acting like he didn’t hear when the twisting sound of the bottle startled him and he gaped at Eveline in shock.
“What is going on, Brother Stefan, and why is Gabriel in Dean Benjamin’s office?” With a warning knuckle twist, she posed the question.
Stefan wasn’t someone who kept things from her, not even when it came to Gabriel. However, his questionable behavior caused her to lose her composure, and she now seeks the truth before he finds himself in serious trouble.
Eveline folded her hands, expecting Stefan to tell her the truth; instead, he pretended to be on the phone, got up, and left, leaving her stunned.
In less than a minute, Stefan got on his bike and rode off, leaving Eveline to watch him go until someone tapped her shoulder and jolted her out of her reverie.
“Eve, why are you by yourself here?” Alex asked, watching Eveline alone.
After seeing the commotion Tiffany caused by holding Eveline accountable for Gracey’s misbehavior, Alex decided to speak with her about the entire matter; however, to do so, they had to vacate the college.
“I can take you home if that is okay with you. I heard you are staying at Gabriel’s place.” Alex remarked, making Eveline scowl.
“How did you know I was at Gabriel’s place?” She asked, her eyes sharply gawking at Alex.
She recalled that only Susan was aware of her stay at Winston’s, so why did he…
Eveline’s train of thought abruptly stopped and her eyes slightly widened as the realization seeps in.
‘Don’t tell me he is following me there too,’ she thought, knowing that was the only thing he had been doing all the time.
Seeing the suspicious expression on Eveline’s face, Alex realized his mistake and promptly came up with an alibi.

“I heard Daniel telling his friends,” he remarked, gesturing to Daniel, who was still engrossed in conversation with his friend and oblivious to Eveline being by herself.
Eveline looked at Daniel and then back at Alex. Even though she had doubts, she was unable to deny him.
“Oh,” she said, forcing a foolish smile.
“So, is it okay if we head home together?” Alex asked, repeating his words once again.
“I am sorry to say no, but she is coming home with me,” Eveline snapped her head to face Gabriel as he approached them.
Alex’s expression darkened upon seeing Gabriel’s nonchalant demeanor. His palm balled into a tight fist as he watched him stand next to Eveline.
Alex didn’t fail to notice the small exchange of glances Gabriel and Eveline shared before she agreed with him.
“Yeah, I am going home with Gabriel.” Eveline grinned awkwardly as a wave of relief passed over her heart.
Alex narrowed his eyes, thinking Eveline was acting strangely, but then he saw Gabriel staring at him with his icy eyes.
“Why do I always see you lingering around her like a bug? Do you not think you are being too clingy in the name of friendship?” Gabriel said it without any shred of empathy, leaving both Eveline and Alex shocked.
But Alex regained his composure quickly and grinned, saying, “That is the same with you, Gabriel. Considering that she detests being around you, why do you still pursue her?”
Alex’s words struck a chord in Gabriel’s heart, causing him to become enraged instantly.
“You..”
Sensing that tension was building between the two boys, Eveline moved swiftly to take Gabriel’s hand and stop him from acting obligingly.
“Alex, I am sorry to decline, but I must go home now.” She pulled Gabriel with her as she said, “I will see you tomorrow,” and turned to leave.
“Daniel, are you coming home or do you want us to leave?” Eveline yelled, grabbing his attention as she continued to drag Gabriel along.
Daniel’s endless conversation ended abruptly when he saw Eveline shooting daggers his way,, gesturing him to be quick.
Understanding her urgency, he quickly bid goodbye to his friends and ran after them.

The car drove with extreme silence, with only two people sitting in the front and back seats conversing through their eyes.
Daniel was eager to know why his brother’s mood was sour, but Eveline continued to decline to say anything.
Daniel could not contain his curiosity and decided to ask in an attempt to break the awkward silence.
“So, Eveline, how are you going to thank my brother for helping you out?” glancing to the backseat, he noticed Eveline had straightened up out of caution.
Eveline gave Daniel a wide-eyed look before continuing to knit in perplexity and asking, “Thank for what?”
Daniel laughed and threw a playful glance at Gabriel, who gave him a stern look.
“Brother, you did not tell her about how you helped her retrieve the glitch footage. I thought you knew it,” Daniel remarked, turning to face Eveline.
Startled, she turned to face Gabriel, but he averted his gaze confirming Daniel’s words.
Eveline had previously believed that there was a glitch in the video when it refused to play, but she was unaware that Gabriel had fixed the issue before the video began to play without any issues.
She struggled to look away from him as conflicted feelings started to surface in her heart.
She had no idea that Gabriel, who was not even present to know what was going on in the dean’s office, would rescue her. What was even more startling was that he kept it a secret from her.
‘What was she supposed to do? Thank him or ignore?’
Eveline was at a loss for words following Daniel’s revelations. Regardless of the situation, she had grown accustomed to Gabriel’s lack of warmth and concern for her.
It was difficult for her to accept that he had even chosen to discreetly assist her, given that he had never stood up for her or come to her defense in the face of criticism and humiliation in her past life.
Gabriel had never once expressed any sympathy for her—from accusing her to killing her—so what was the deal? How come he was suddenly changing his mind when he had never tried to be vulnerable with her?
As soon as they reached home, Eveline was the first one to get out and walk inside the house without looking behind.
She didn’t want to face Gabriel, not after what she came to know about him.
It was better for her to hate and there was no way she would come to melt her heart because of his thoughtful gesture.
Gabriel, on the other hand, watched Eveline walk out without saying anything and found himself at a loss for words. The anger he felt earlier due to Alex’s remark was gone and now what bothered him was Eveline’s lack of acknowledgement.
He could not just watch her avoid him until he could verify what he was going through because of her, even though he had no idea what he was feeling because of her ignorance.
