Chapter 205: Camping in the night
After sharing soup and bread, they snuffed out the campfire and readied their tents to sleep.
Michael was going to leave and rest back in Neo Orcus, when he suddenly heard faint whisperings in the forest.
“…jackpot…they don’t have any security with them…”
“…they look like merchants too. Their carriage looked to be full of money ready to take…”
“…listen guys. Let’s make this quick. Steal their money and get out. No need to make this messy…”
With his enhanced hearing Michael caught wind of a thievery waiting to happen.
He peeked out of his tent and used his Supreme Skill: Unity Gathering to search the environment for Life Mana. And sure enough, he saw five people waiting in the bushes and watching the camp with greedy eyes.
The chocolate merchants were none the wiser. They slept in their tents, unaware of such dangers lurking in the shadows.
Hmm…these thieves are quite weak, Michael assessed. They are all only in the 2-star realm.
Michael didn’t want to brag, but he could deal with these thieves in a literal blink of an eye. He didn’t even have to use any Physical Arts spell. A simple [Earth Wall] or [Ember] spell would be enough to scare these thieves into unconsciousness.
Should I deal with them now?
Before Micheal moved, he saw Fudge emerge from the shadows. The slime looked up at him, begging.
“Master please… let us deal with this. This is so exciting. This is the first time that any of us can show off the power of Reborn’s Shadow!”
“…..fine,” Michael acquiesced. Since ‘Reborn’s Shadow’—as they liked to call themselves—was going to be the first line of defense for the Nation of Reborn, Michael wanted to see what they were capable of firsthand.
“Yes!” Fudge rejoiced.
“But don’t tell the Dragonborns.”
“Oh of course, Master. Miss Sheina would be angry at me if she knew that she wasn’t there to protect you from these thieves.”
While Fudge disappeared to set up the defense with the other Orcs, Michael sneaked into the tents of the merchants to warn them of the incoming thieves.
“Huh?…” the veteran merchant groggily woke up. “Michael?”
After Michael told them about the five thieves in the bushes, the veteran peddler hastily stood up.
“Thieves? Here? Who would be so brazen as to do that?”
“Isn’t it normal to have thieves in the wilderness?” Michael asked them.
“No sir. Not here. Everyone knows that the territory around Angora City is under the protection of the Order of the Heavenly Knights. Not even organized crime groups would be so brazen as to disregard the Order for such a small caravan.
That’s why we don’t have any security with us. We thought we wouldn’t need it. Clearly, we were wrong.”
The influence of the Order was bigger than Michael thought. If the merchants were so confident as to embark without any security, then it must mean that they fully trusted that thieves were too afraid of the Knights.
“Well, you’re all Rebornians now. All the security you will ever need is right under your shadows,” Michael assured the merchants. “Just look at how your ‘shadows’ deal with it.”
Just then, the thieves seemed to have finally finished their preparations.
“I know you’re awake,” a rough voice said. “Give us all your gold coins, and no one gets hurt.”
The chocolate merchants all looked at Michael, and he just nodded at them, assuring them that nothing bad was going to happen.
Slowly, they walked out of their tents with their hands up in the air signalling their surrender.

There were five men wearing tattered black clothes trying to conceal their identities. But they seemed to have neglected to cover the most important part: their faces.
They wielded rusted scimitars on their hands, threatening the merchants with nothing but tetanus with those crumbling weapons.
Michael watched as the thieves approached the carriages, aggressively taking off the cover to reveal the treasure hidden inside.
“Huh? What is this?”
“Food? Is this trash?”
“No…wait a minute, that looks familiar…”
One of the thieves’s eyes flashed with a glint of recognition as he looked at the violet and gold wrapping of the chocolate bar.
“Yeah…this is chocolate!”
“???”
“You know, the one that was talked about in Angora City! The one that those Knights have been raving about!”
Only after that explanation did the other thieves finally realize the treasure that they had in front of their eyes.
“Jackpot! We can sell all of this for tens of thousands of gold!”
Greed could be seen overflowing in the thieves’ eyes. They even became a little bit impatient, approaching the chocolate merchants to threaten them into giving up the carriages.
“Don’t do it,” the veteran peddler pleaded.
But the thieves disregarded his warning.
“Hey, old man! This is our carriage now. Leave if you don’t want to get cut up into pieces!”
The chocolate merchants stood their ground. They wanted to protect the chocolates because it was not theirs, but the Reborn company’s possession.
“Grah!”
One of the impatient thieves ended up picking a big rock from the ground and throwing it to the veteran peddler.
As it was about to hit, a transparent prismatic shield appeared to protect him from harm.
“Huh?!”
“What was that?!”
The thieves were stunned. It didn’t take long before the thieves charged towards the merchants with their scimitars in their hands.
The veteran peddler flinched as the blade came towards his face, but thankfully, it was stopped half a meter away from him.
The thieves, surprised yet remained undeterred, tried to hack into the prismatic shield. However, any attempt they made only ended up bouncing the blade back to them.
“How is this possible?!”
“They’re just merchants! How do they have this impenetrable defense?!”
“It’s okay. I’m sure it will break eventually. Just keep hacking!”
They thought they had all night to threaten the merchants.
They didn’t know that their shadows began to stretch and mold under the static moon above the starry skies.
Terrifying three meter tall Orcs, numbering ten in total, emerged from the shadows behind the thieves.
Michael, watching all of this, couldn’t help but laugh.
“HAHAHAHAHA!”
They were supposed to be ninjas, undetected in the night, yet their huge statures were the complete opposite of what they were trying to accomplish.
