Chapter 545: Hugs and handshakes.
Electricity jolted through Phoebe when Katherine’s eyes pinned her down like a specimen on an alien’s table about to be prodded. She had a feeling that the grudge Katherine held against her had quadrupled. Between them, even cordiality had ceased from this moment on.
“Mother be careful of aunt Katherine, her hatred for you just went off the radar.” Star warned strongly.
Phoebe’s lips curled into a sneer. “I know baby, I know that too damn well.” She replied, tearing her eyes away from Katherine.
“What do I do babe?” David’s voice echoed in her ear, diverting her attention to him.
She saw the storm of disturbance in his eyes; he was troubled by this sudden burden that his grandfather had laid at his feet. On one hand, the group could use his help but on the other, he was unwilling to return. A bird that had found freedom would never willingly return to the cage after all.
Quickly, Phoebe caught on with what was happening, she had a feeling that David was about to refuse his grandfather’s good intentions. “You cannot say no to your grandfather David, not if you want the Saxon group to continue existing. As president you will get to make real change in the company.
If your father is mule headed and unhelpful, we will stage a coup, and you can become chairman. Let’s be honest, this is your fate, you cannot run from it forever. Morgan and I will take care of D.P holdings.” She advised, assuring him by patting his back.
Feeling naughty, she added a joke. “I want to be the president’s wife.”
David’s lips quivered, he wanted to laugh but he held himself back. The ghosts did not, they laughed loudly because not many could see or hear them.
“Oh come on just say yes.” Maureen urged. “Then I will brag that my nephew is the president of the Saxon group. I am onboard with the coup, we can stage it tonight itself, just say the word.” She wriggled her eyebrows with excitement.
A nervous cough escaped David as he stood up and bowed to his grandfather, those in support cheered for him and it was the majority. Only Katherine openly showed her displeasure.
David put his hands on his chest and said as humbly as he could, “This is honestly unexpected and originally I was going to turn it down, but I cannot defy grandpa’s command at such a time when we are vulnerable and need to come together as one united family to keep the wolves at bay.
Although I have other commitments, I will return to the Saxon group and take up the position of president. I also promise to give it all my best.” He turned his head Roberts’ way and said, “Father I hope that we can bury the hatchet and get along, respecting each other from this moment forward.” A hesitant smile flickered, he was still uncertain about this decision being the right one.
He was clear however in his words to his father. He did not want to be addressed as boy in the company or shouted at as if he was an ignorant little kid with no understanding of business.
Nodding once, Robert’s teeth bared into something not quite joy. He had already come to understand the situation, even though he was the chairman, his son had a leash around his neck with the support of his father. He had to play nice because they needed David and he did not need them.
He had already proven this fact with his successful cough vaccine. Rumor had it that his research company had successfully developed an HPV vaccine as well and they had just passed human trials. If David had been part of the company, all of that would have belonged to the Saxon group.
David was not expendable, he was.
Robert forced himself to smile even broader. “We will do a great job together son.” He managed to say.
Rufus’s hands collided like a cannon shot. “That is what I am talking about.” He cheered, urging the rest to join him. “You can now return to finishing your meals those that have not, otherwise I will see you all tonight at the Mayfair wedding. Every Saxon should attend; we are family with the Mayfair’s now.” He signaled at Phoebe and her group to follow him.
Huddles of conversation erupted across the dining hall with most discussing what they considered to be Katherine’s downfall and Rufus’s reference to the Mayfair’s as family. But it was mostly Katherine that was on the tip of everyone’s mouth.
This was because she had loudly, on many occasions said that she would be the next president of the group. She had been circling around Rufus for a while, and some had begun to believe it to be true.
“There is no coming back from this, this was truly humbling for her.” Nini spoke to one group, staring at Katherine’s retreating back.
“This serves her right honestly, how could she brag about someone else’s stolen work on more than one occasion? I thought she would stop after the lawsuit.” Lacy rolled her eyes, clearly disgusted.
Orson Saxon from the sixth clan put a hand around Robert’s shoulders and whispered, “You are not the chairman, David is. Read the room Robbie, if it wasn’t for David, Thomas would be where you are now.”
He walked off laughing because he was not Robert’s fan. Anything bad that happened to Robert was good in his books. Orson liked David, but he didn’t like Robert.
Some of the Saxons, surrounded David, congratulating him, including Orson who made sure that Robert saw them sharing a hug and taking a picture together.
Miranda was too caught up in her own happiness to notice her husband’s scowl. She was a mother who was over the moon because one of the children she bore was wearing the prince’s crown. Not to forget that she was now the official lady of the Saxon group.
Maureen was already texting furiously, briefing her mother who in turn posted updates in the ladies group chat about David’s new position in the Saxon group and telling everyone to call her grandma president.
“Isn’t grandmother busy since the wedding is today? How does she have time for gossip? Also, Collin is the president of Mayfair Corp. Isn’t she already grandma president?” Phoebe asked, a chuckle following her words.

Placing her phone in her pant pocket, Maureen scoffed. “Mother is good at multi-tasking. Nothing makes her life rosier than founding lane gossip.” She answered.
“Let us go and finish up with Dean Rufus, I do not want to miss wedding cake for anything. I repeat, wedding cake that was flown in from the best bakery in the world.” Rekha’s request sounded urgent which had them bubbling with laughter.
They left the dining hall and headed to the study, David made a hasty retreat before another hug could ambush him, following Phoebe and the guardians.
Rufus was finishing up with Mr. Cornwell when they arrived. The lawyer stood up the moment he saw the women; after offering a bow to the old patriarch he began to stroll towards the door.
“Ladies, Phoebe Mayfair.” He offered them a bow on his way out.
David burst through the door, breathless. “What did I miss?” He gasped out.
“We were yet to begin.” Rufus said abandoning his executive chair for the singular sofa chair in the open area.
