Chapter 560: Weight of an ultimatum.

Time came to a stop, the music and complaints about Enigma and Evelyn’s behavior faded, all Phoebe could hear was the sound of her heart hammering against her rib cage. Dammit Connie!!! Why did you jinx us by mentioning demons? She thought.

She thought about the weapons in her space, and which one would do the job without alarming the wedding guests.

“Child, are you alright? Your face has become whiter than Shanna’s wedding dress.” The spirit asked, concern coating its words.

It could not read Phoebe’s mind easily as it used to thanks to Baby Star blocking it. Now, if it wanted to know what was on her mind, it had to ask.

Through her mind, Phoebe told the spirit what Star had told her driving the spirit into shock. Once again Star amazed it. How could the baby tell?

“How can a demon, demon affiliate or whatever he is be so brazen to appear at a party filled with guardians and hunters without any fear?” It watched Enigma and Evelyn get lost in the crowd.

Phoebe shook her head and shut her eyes. “Will Evelyn be alright? Perhaps we should deal with Enigma now.” She suggested. She hid her right hand under the table and one gun from her space appeared in it. Her eyes followed Enigma with her trembling fingers clutching the trigger of the gun.

The bullets were not ordinary, even if she shot him, nobody would tell what she had done. Well, a few people would tell but the ordinary humans probably wouldn’t. There would be a fuss when he fell to the ground and died, which would ruin Collin and Shanna’s wedding.

She sent the gun back into her space and gestured at the Saxon spirit.

The spirit nodded, catching on quickly on what to do. “I will follow them and make sure that she is protected.” It spoke before vanishing, all the ghosts followed.

Phoebe tried to be normal, keep talking and act indifferent but she was very worried. She could not get the images of Enigma harming Evelyn out of her mind. The demon was controlling her, she had been charmed or something. It was not safe to leave her leave her in close contact with a demon.

Just as she stood, David’s fingers laced through hers, pulling her back gently.

“Where are you off too love? I think we should stick together, we do not know what dangers are lurking around, Evelyn’s new man being one of those dangers.” His eyes darted around, as if in search of something or someone suspicious.

“Let go David, Evelyn could be in trouble as we speak. I have to go to her.” She answered.

“Calm down Phoebe.” The Saxon spirit returned just in time to stop her. “There are too many eyes, Enigma will not hurt her just yet, at least not here. I believe that he needs Evelyn for now.”

Silvester and Connie returned with new information. “Evelyn introduced him to her parents, she’s seriously considering marrying him. Here they come.” Connie jutted it’s chin towards the approaching couple.

Phoebe nodded absently, her attention anchored to David’s words. “H-how do you know about Enigma?” She asked him. Star had told her what Enigma was, so how did David know that he was dangerous?

A frown creased David’s brow as he scrutinized her. Something was not right! All he knew about Enigma was what happened after Phoebe had died. How did she know him?

“We will discuss this later and try to act as normal as possible.” He feigned a cough, taking a sip on some water.

The others at the table swapped worried gazes. Something was off, they could tell but Phoebe and David were not sharing just yet. Whatever it was, Evelyn and Enigma were at the center of it.

“What the hell kind of name is Enigma anyway?” Luna hissed.

The answer to her question did not come as the couple reached them. There were smiles on their faces, and they were as happy as clams.

Evelyn settled in a chair. “I hope that you did not miss us so much.” She teased. “What have we missed?”

A laugh rumbled in Maureen’s chest. “I thought that you would dump him on the way here, but I guess it has not happened yet. What new brand of alcohol are you drinking lately because you must be drunk as fuck.” She flung the words like a gauntlet, grinning at the shock they caused.

“Maureen!” Evelyn yelled, wide eyed.

Shaking her head, Maureen continued to laugh. “I am sorry but this situationship that you have going on is just giving odd vibes. We all think that this is a fool’s day prank or something. I don’t buy this whole thing just yet, no offense Iggy.” She shrugged.

Luna covered her mouth, keeping in the chuckles after Maureen called Enigma Iggy. She was not the one that fighting laughter, Rekha, Andre and Phoebe were doing the same. As for the ghosts, they were fitfully laughing.

Enigma let out a deep laugh, calling unnecessary attention to himself. “A dark sense of humor, I like it. I think that I will fit in quite well with your little group honey.” He said, kissing the back of Evelyn’s hand.

A collective shudder passed through them, one by one they pushed back from the table, stripping Enigma and Evelyn of understanding. They could not understand why everyone was acting as if they were looking at a pile of crap.

While the outside of the Mayfair manor was a riot of celebration, the inside was clung in silence. Four men sat in the Mayfair hidden basement discussing on what happened at the time of Cillian’s death. They were drinking Phoebe’s liqueur and eating cake as they spoke in low voices.

Rufus’s fingers rubbed his beard. “From everything that you have all heard from Edward here, you can see why I am hellbent on cleaning house starting with Morrel and his cronies. The academy is a place that was built to nurture talents, not push personal agendas.

Things have gone terribly wrong in the last three decades; the academy has rotted from the inside and things need to change. For that to happen, I will need your support as my most trusted allies. The tasks I need you to enforce are heavy and I will not take no for an answer.” His request carried the weight of an ultimatum.

Old man Lee nodded. “I am in, what about you Abraham?” He’s eyes shifted to the old man.

A flicker of uncertainty crossed Abraham’s face. “But…what if we are wrong! I still have doubts that Morrel could do that to Cillian. We all know what happened, we saw the backup team heading out to render assistance. What you are saying happened with Cillian, it is a gross violation of the academy, its laws and all we believe in.”
