Chapter 561: A four man conversation

The academy was built on values and principals, trust was important. If they could not trust the dean of the school, then who could they trust? They might as well tear the academy down and start from scratch.

Hammering the table without thinking, Edward snarled at Abraham almost like he wanted to tear the man’s throat out for daring to defend Morrel. “We are not wrong! I am not wrong Abraham; I will never forget the events of that time. Morrel gave my father an impossible mission and left him out there to die.

Then he pretended to send back up when he did not, that is what happened. All those people on the backup team must be part of Morrel’s group. My father told me to trust no one from the academy himself right before he perished in that fire.” He spoke through pursed lips.

Rufus let out a heavy sigh. “About that Edward, I want to ask did Cillian say anything that sounded odd in that conversation?”

“W-what? What do you mean by odd?” Edward’s eyes darted around in the sockets, wondering why the old patriarch was asking such a question. “I do not understand.”

In response, Rufus clapped once. “Think boy! That day, did Cillian say something, anything about where he was going or what his plan was?” Questions stumbled out of him.

Shaking his head, Edward leaned on the edge of the table. “He told me not to trust anyone from the academy that it was full of moles….

“Ridiculous!” Abraham Spellcaster threw in. A warning stare from Rufus compelled him to compose himself. “We have gone from Morrel cannot be trusted to moles!!! That is farfetched.” He strongly denied, gaze snapping open.

Old man Lee flicked his fingers. “Oh quit it Abraham, which shell have you locked yourself in all these years? Obviously, something is very wrong at the school, otherwise your powers would be growing, and you would be able to weave spells. Have you made any progress in three decades? What had Morrel done to help your department develop since he took power?” He snarled.

The answer was nothing. Ever since Morrel took over the running of the school, there had been no advancements in magic at the school. Magic was always changing so the course of study also had to keep changing. Morrel had ordered them to stick to the old stuff.

“He has ruined the school that I… our ancestors worked hard to build. Do you know what happens when we don’t add to our knowledge? We die because the things we fight learn how we operate. They counter our spells while coming up with new ones.

We are sending innocent unprepared hunters into the field. Haven’t you noticed that more hunters from the academy have been injured in the last three decades? How many of our best guardians have died on Morrel’s watch? We are unprepared for the next supernatural war.” Rufus snapped.

The answer was many more than necessary. Even if it was one, two or ten, the number was too great.

Abraham folded his quivering lips. “Well, what are we to do? Where do we start? I am honestly afraid because what you are implying…..my God!!” He rubbed his palms over his face and sighed.

It was one thing to read about the supernatural war and another to fight in one, the academy which was supposed to take the lead and be a safe haven for the hunters was now compromised.

“First we find Cillian, he is the only person who can tell everyone what happened that time and what he found that he put him on to the tracks of Morrel and his group.” Rufus told them.

Edward stared at Rufus, unblinking as the words sank in. “Wait..find who? C-cillian? My father, are you talking about my father? Do you mean that he is alive?” He shook his head and touched his head with both hands. He could doubt anyone’s words but not Rufus’s. If Rufus was saying Cillian was alive, he had a good reason why.

The other two older men only watched in disbelief, hearts pounding.

“Goodness Rufus where did you hear that? I hate to be the party pooper here, but we buried the man.” Lee struggled to let the words out.

Rufus looked at his old friend as if he was a fool. “Did you confirm this through a DNA test? Other than the things which were left behind, what on that body proved it was Cillian’s? Didn’t you ever wonder why the fire burned the body to a crisp but his dog tags, wallet and weapons were untouched? Whoever you buried was not Cillian, he is alive. I got this information from a good source.” He confessed further.

“What source? I need to speak with your informant now!” Edward rubbed his eyes. “It makes sense somehow because father said that he had somewhere to go and that he would clean the academy when he returned.” He tugged on his front hair.

Edward felt stupid. His father had told him the message directly. He had said he had somewhere to go. Why didn’t he ever think about that?

Abraham scoffed. “This is pure madness, we are insane for considering this! If that was not Cillian, then who was it?” He perched at the edge of the chair.

Ignoring Abraham, Rufus focused his attention on Edward who was demanding for answers. “About the informant we have a lot to talk privately on that matter.” He answered.

“Why privately? Are we not in this together?” Abraham chimed in.

Rufus brow creased to form a frown. “The information about the informant is very confidential but it has nothing to do with cleaning the academy which you should focus on. That and improving your magic because I need weavers Abraham.” His voice was laced with mild irritation.

“About the cleanup, let us stick with the plan, during the Annual academy search for gifted children we should test all guardians and hunters with the pure crystals. They will tell us which people are not fit to be at the academy anymore. We can find a reason to get rid of the bad batch of students that have been ruined to avoid ruining the new ones.” Old man Lee had a team ready to do the job.

It included members of the Lee family, Castille family and some Miller’s.

Rufus nodded gently. “That is excellent work Lee. We must also keep in mind that we have a bigger war to prepare for now that we know that Azur is out there, walking in the world with a purpose.”

Abraham looked like he was almost about to faint. As far as he knew, Azur was still imprisoned in the academy. Why was he walking in the world? Who had let him out? How long had he been out there?

“Azur! Like the big bad demon that is connected to Ravana?” Edward asked. His shoulders fell when Rufus nodded. “We are so screwed.”
