Chapter 563: The girls were all liars.
Puzzled, Edward felt his ears roar. How the hell did Phoebe come into this? She was the informant!!! How? And why had she chosen to tell Rufus and not him. Why did she have so many secrets? He was still getting over the news of her pregnancy and now he was getting even more shocking news.

Actually, he could not decide what was more shocking between her pregnancy and her telling Rufus about her grandfather.

“I honestly do not understand what you are saying uncle Rufus. Phoebe came to you with information about my father being alive…how would she even know that? Has she seen him?” Had his father visited Phoebe at her cafe and told her to keep it a secret? “I am so confused.” He let out a hollow rasp, as if speaking took his last strength.

“From what I gather, this all began after Rekha Montgomery’s memory of the day of her parents murder returned…..” Rufus had barely started speaking when Edward’s voice sliced through with a question.

“Rekha’s memory returned! When? She told me that she remembered nothing from the night of her parents’ murder. I have been asking her every day, and she has been giving me the same negative answer every day.” Edward was stunned at how good a liar the girl was. She had looked into his eyes every day and lied to his face.

In the minutes that followed, Rufus briefed Edward on everything that Rekha remembered. “That was how they found out that Azur was free and out there.” Rufus poured hot coffee into a cup.

“Okay I get all that but how does my Phoebe become your informant? She did not know her grandfather so how does she know that her grandfather is alive?” Edward blinked, slow and owlish.

Rufus took a sip of the coffee; he laughed weakly as he placed the cup on the table. “Edward, you have no idea about how special that young woman is. She is not ordinary first because she was reborn, this is her second chance at life.” He paused such that he could digest that; he went on to tell him everything he knew of the rebirth.

“I figured out the reborn thing on my own. It never crossed my mind that it was because of a magic pendant connected to your family. I thought my daughter was just stranger and I was even stranger because I could see her thoughts.” Edward threw himself back in the chair.

“You too? I can see them too!” Rufus gasped. “The rest of the Saxon’s can also see Phoebe’s thoughts because the Saxon pendant brought her back. She has saved most of them from accidents, premature deaths, making wrong business moves hell she saved the Saxon group from insiders that were planning to sell our most valued formulas. Also, David was reborn as well just so you know.” He paused to take another sip.

“Crap! That’s how he knew her before ever meeting her. The gossip about his search for a red-haired woman named Phoebe was everywhere. My mother was among those that were very interested in that little scandal, not knowing that the red-haired woman was from our family.” Edward sighed tiredly. “Her return to the family changed many things, it burst open the cuckoo case for starters.”

Shaking his head, Rufus furrowed his brows. “Do not get me started on that case Edward, it was no coincidence that the founding families were the ones most affected. My team discovered that it was not as ordinary as it seemed. We found out that it is tied to the problems we are having. Some of the children of Ravana’s believers were among the cuckoos placed in founding families deliberately. Worse still I have come to discover that some of those children infiltrated the academy to become hunters, some are even guardians.” His clenched fist smacked the table. “Morrel did not expel them when their identities were revealed. He said what was done was done and they were now part of the academy.”

Edward’s hand clenched around an empty glass. The surprises were not over yet, it seemed. He could not imagine what would have happened had the cuckoos gone undiscovered forever. At least most had been removed from the founding families. Many had even had parts of the memories of those children wiped to protect the secrets of their families.

“Sounds like a meticulous plan made by someone high up like Azur. He must be working with a powerful witch or warlock because blood magic is the only way for children of founding families to qualify as students of the academy. Someone must have altered the blood of those children or faked the test somehow. Azur has been busy all these years.” Edward leaned forward as he spoke.

Nodding his head, Rufus agreed. “We have locked them up in a safe underground bunker only a few of us know of. Those that have been tortured have adamantly refused to say anything, can you believe that some were demons in disguise? Those were sent straight to hell.” He continued to narrate.

“Bloody hell! Demons in the academy, no wonder you want to overhaul it all start afresh. But my priority is my father, you still have not told me how Phoebe knows that he is alive or how to find him.” Edward reminded him.

“She has this book, which she uses to talk to ghosts.” Rufus extended his finger before Edward could raise an argument. “I have spoken to Holly and many people through it. Your father did not turn up when Maureen summoned him, nor when I and Phoebe tried.” He drew a deliberate breath.

“Maureen knows?” Edward asked, shock embracing his features.

Rufus’ tongue made a slow tut as he weighed his words. “On the subject of your sister, she is a guardian, don’t think about berating her, she only became one to know more about your father’s death. All these years, she has been secretly investigating the truth about what happened when he died.”

“Understood, I am not even shocked at all, it’s Maureen we are talking about here. I actually had a feeling that she was involved in the supernatural world when I saw how good she was with knives.” Edward added a scoff to his words. “I cannot believe that all the women under my roof are liars.”

Rufus had expected the table to be flipped but it was not which relieved him. “They are not liars; they just didn’t want to involve you because of your stance on the academy and the fact that you would not talk about your father with them.” A stern expression came to settle on Rufus’ features. “Cillian is not on the other side so he is alive but veiling himself so as not to be found.

It seems he faked his death and went into hiding. I think I know who is helping him hide but I must poke around to find that particular two-winged creature.” He went silent, thinking of the only being that could hide Cillian and keep all magic from detecting where he was.

With a faraway look, Edward made a momentous decision. “I will be returning to the academy.” Iron bled into his voice.
