Chapter 583: Obed tells it all.
A loud contemptuous chuckle came from Obed. “That is not shocking at all, my grandmother would rather bury an empty coffin than become the subject of gossip on the lane.” He stated. “A missing coffin with two women dressed like ancient brides is not the kind of news she wants circulating out there.”
His grandmother ruled the family with an iron fist, driving them all to be outstanding. She had strict rules about Montgomery’s becoming the subject of scandal. Dead or alive, they were supposed to have spotless reputations.
Maureen had already decided on another reason why the burial had proceeded. “She is trying to cover up what is clearly a crime. If this kind of news leaks to the police…..” she stopped and whistled.
Everyone could only imagine what would follow. The Montgomery family would unravel, and their legacy would crumble.
“No, I think that there is more to what she is hiding is more than their grotesque tradition. She probably does not want people especially the Mayfair’s who have a guardian poking their nose into her family affairs. The Montgomery backyard is shady; it needs to be dug up.” Phoebe voiced her perspective.
The spirit that had been hovering over the coffin, scrutinizing Obed’s body finally said something. “You are right about that Phoebe, I found a strange man, a sorcerer of dark magic and he was chanting spells to transfer the souls of these three somewhere. Just so you know I snapped his neck. We do not need bad sorcerer’s roaming around; we have enough problems to deal with.” It informed them.
Letting out a wince, Maureen rubbed her fingers. “Obed said that his soul was going to be eaten, is this what he meant by that?” Her curious eyes shifted to Obed just like everyone else.
Obed faltered, words dissolving before they left his tongue.
“Perhaps we should return this coffin to your grandmother if you do not want to speak.” Rekha moved to put the cover back on.
The girls perked up when they heard that they would return. “Yes, please return us and why do you keep mentioning our master like he is around here in this room.” One spoke with desperation.
“Because he is.” Phoebe wriggled her wrist, granting them the gift of supernatural sight.
They gasped from shock upon seeing him. “Master! ” The younger one offered him a bow acting subservient.
“Husband.” The older one cried out, rushing over to hug him. Sean dragged her back and forced her to sit down again.
Maureen lifted her hands to the sky, “Seriously, you two bitches are still at this!”
Obed gritted his jaw. “I am not your husband or master! I have told you that thousands of times. You were given the free will to decide to do this, but my free will was taken away. You can return if you want to, but my body stays.” He looked at Phoebe and Maureen, tears pooled in his eyes. “What I was told was that after death, our souls are consumed by a powerful witch who is going to lead the supernatural revolution that will take us to the new world.
Apparently in that new world all those that obeyed the master will reincarnate with the best lives, wealth and glory. This secret is revealed to only Montgomery’s that are on their death bed as far as I can guess.” The confession curled into the air, thin as smoke.
Everyone made their judgements on who the powerful man and they guessed it was not so much of a witch and more of a demon.
“Wait a minute, where did you hear this bizarre story from? Morgan?” Rekha asked, gob smacked. “What the fuck has that old witch brought into that family?”
Maureen gripped her hands around a blade, as far as she figured, it was time to hunt. “It is not so bizarre when you think about how downhill the Montgomery’s have gone in the last decades. Someone in the family must gave made a deal with a demon and they are using the souls of the Montgomery family as payment.” She gave her opinion. “Spill Obed, who is the powerful witch? You were a hunter, so I know that you are thinking the same thing I am. Which demon is it? Who in the family knows about this deal?”
Shrugging his shoulders, Obed swore that he did not know. They were all overestimating him, he had already told them everything that he knew.
“Like I said, I found out all of this when I was already on my way to death. As for who told me the story, it was my uncle Shem Montgomery, he is the most powerful warlock in the family. He is the one that that ghost friend of yours killed before vanishing with the coffin.” He explained further.
“Well, that wasn’t in the news.” Maureen muttered.
“Shem Montgomery!!!! As in Shem who is one of the most famous and righteous cardinals of the church of saints and angels! Shem that is whispered to be the next potential pope of our faith!! We all know Shem; he is very kind and sweet. He…he is evil!!” Grandma Mayfair placed a hand to her chest.
“Evil loves the light mother, it is where it can find those to corrupt.” Maureen commented.
Old lady Mayfair summoned her strength to speak. “I remember that my darling Cillian used to say that there was a darkness behind Shem’s smile.”
To those words, Maureen added, “There was a rumor at the academy that he became a shadow of himself after the crystal rejected him as a guardian. He got a teaching job at the academy and kept his head down. He does not even take part in hunts, he teaches the history of magic–witchcraft and folklore specifically, I guess he resorted to practicing black magic himself while corrupting the very school and thing that rejected him.” She aired her thoughts.
“He was probably the one that made the deal.” Obed guessed. “Our burial rituals have always been a little off I will admit but our coffins only got bigger in the last four or five decades.”
They understood what he was trying to say. It was that not all Montgomery’s were evil, one man was rotting the tree.
Phoebe let out a scoff. “The supernatural war started inside of the academy itself, it seems. Whoever is taking the souls must be using them to boost their power or something. As for the women–death brides? What really is there role here? If that tradition was not originally a Montgomery one, then why introduce it in the family?” Phoebe asked, her sympathetic eyes staring at them.
“Hey, did you two really sell your souls and bodies to be used in rituals that you did not understand just because of money! Did it ever cross your minds that you would never reincarnate or maybe you would go straight to hell? How sure were you that after your death, your families would be taken care of?”
