Chapter 619: On the pure humans again…
The Mayfair’s waited to see what Phoebe would decide to do. Maureen for one would be disappointed in her if she forgave Katherine. A woman that had badmouthed her, insulted her, smeared her name and plotted with Ruth to kill her.

The enmity between her and Katherine was not something that could be fixed overnight. It was one of those lifelong feuds.

Phoebe massaged Katherine’s cheek gently. “No, you will never change Katherine. As ridiculous as this sounds, I know you even better than you know yourself.” A tiny smile tugged on her lips.

David had told her that when the Saxon’s were ruined in their last life, Katherine had run off with some of the antiques and money that was left. Nobody knew what had happened to her or where she disappeared to after she left.

Since she had run away then and lived on her own, abandoning the Saxon name, she might as well live that way in this life.

“W-what? You will not help me? But that is not you! The Phoebe I know is soft and forgiving. I am on my knees and apologizing, why do you have to make it so hard for me?” The words exploded out of Katherine like a dam breaking under pressure.

Grandpa Rufus hurled a piece of a broken saucer at her__it whizzed past her head and exploded against the wall in a burst of porcelain shrapnel. “Is that why you were taking advantage of her? Because she is a nice person! I will not allow anyone to bring shame on this family name, you grandmother’s decision stands.” He bit out, each word dripping with contempt. “Do not make me hand you over to the enforcers because as far as I can tell, you were very close to Ruth–or Clarisse. For all we know, you were working with them too.”

The room burst into whispers as some began to talk about Katherine, others condemned her openly. A few voices were calling out for the enforcers to take her. They did not want one bad egg to ruin the rest.

Burning with humiliation, Katherine slipped out like a shadow, praying that no one would notice.

“Look at her go.” Grandma Mayfair wrinkled her nose in Katherine’s direction. She had a punishment ready for her by spreading the gossip of what had happened, nothing but humiliation was awaiting her beyond the Saxon tower.

Star was not content in Katherine just leaving like that. A burst of light that nobody noticed shot out of Phoebe’s stomach and entered Katherine’s body.

Phoebe looked at Miranda and Robert and she sighed. Miranda was wiping tears from her eyes and Robert was looking down, unsure of what to say or do.

Nini took a small sip on an herbal tonic that she got from the cafe. “Did any of you feel like that man….eeehhh Margaret’s boyfriend was about to kill us all? Thank the heavens for sending us the grand guardian.” She croaked, clearing her horse throat. “I may be old, but I am not ready to die.” She covered her mouth and coughed.

David looked around, wondering why the other Saxon elders had been taken to safety and not her. Who had left his old aunt behind when weapons had been pulled out?

“I still cannot believe that our Phoebe is that grand guardian that we have been waiting for. Forgive me if I have wronged you in any way.” Nile said, offering her a ninety degrees bow.

A myriad of bows and respectful gazes were sent Phoebe’s way. They were mixed in with words of gratefulness for what she had done for them. If not for her, Bradley would have wiped them out.

“My daughter-in-law is the grand guardian.” Miranda sniffed, smiling through her pain.

[If you only knew ha-ha] Phoebe’s thought left them puzzled.

“I can see that you all have questions for her or want to engage in a conversation with Phoebe, but I implore you to leave her alone, she won’t be answering any of your questions right now.” Rufus told them.

Robert feigned a cough. “What I want to know is about this Othello fellow.” His gaze shifted to his son. “How did you know about him? And who the hell is Enigma? I don’t think I know who he is.”

Nini and everyone that was part of the founding lane gossip mill sneered at Robert. Were there people on the founding lane that were not aware of Evelyn’s Enigma?

“Luna would be in a better position to explain the Othello story.” With a single nod, he ceded the conversation to her.

Luna was glad to be included in the conversation, she wasted no time in telling them everything her cousin Lucera told her, Phoebe tossed in extra details that the spirit gave her to round things out.

“I cannot believe that he was still alive. I read about him in the book on the war. Records stated that he was dead.” Rufus shook his head.

“There is a cartoon like picture of him in a history of the founding family’s book. It looks nothing like Bradley.” Orson said.

Some people rolled their eyes. Of course it looked nothing like him. One it was a cartoon and two, Othello used magic to change his faces through the years.

“That bastard caught me off guard earlier.” The spirit rolled its shoulders and sighed, loosening the days tension. “There is something that you should know.” It began.

Phoebe braced herself, it was never a good thing when the spirit said that.

“The girls that I was watching over….the pure twins….I do not know where they are anymore.” Its voice wavered, bracing for the blow of her reply and Phoebe did not disappoint.

“What!” She jumped from the chair, sending it flying back. “What do you mean that the pure humans are gone!”

By just the sound of her voice, the rest knew that there was trouble, and it was too soon for them to be relieved just because the sorcerer was dead, and Enigma had been captured.

David stared at her, then at his phone which was buzzing nonstop. He decided to pick the call, and he too responded with outrage.”What do you mean by she is dead?” He growled the words out.

From Phoebe, everyone turned to David. It seemed there was worse news on his front. Who had died?

On the other end of the phone, David listened to a report made by Roman. “Enigma did something to her, voodoo or something. She was fine in one moment and dead in the next at least medically according to our doctors.”

Phoebe was tapping into the call with magic. “Is she dead or not? I think that she is one of the pure humans that Zephyra told us about. This must be one of the plan b, c, d, e up to z that Bradley said.”

“Explain now!” Rufus demanded to the Saxon spirit.

“Who is he talking to?” Nini croaked out.

The Saxon spirit decided to show itself to the rest of the family, prepared for the gaps and shock. “Yes, I am your ancestral spirit, do not be frightened and let us not waste time as we are on a clock.” It told them.
