Chapter 633: Cleansed Island.
“He will turn up and when he does, we will deal with him.” Phoebe said, confidently.
Her voice and the relaxed look on her face after a full night of sleep and fresh warm meal told them that she knew what she was talking about as the grand guardian’s mother.
“Phoebe is right, we cannot spend every second thinking about it and putting our lives on hold.” Cillian said, pulling a tray of pineapple jam filled scones. “Demons like to play mind games. Azur knows that going into hiding will make everyone nervous. Nervousness leads to mistakes. We should remain calm and rational.”
Rufus was rest assured when he heard Cillian’s words. The return of his old friend and his readiness to get back to work eased the load on his shoulders quite a bit.
“How did you discover that the academy had been infiltrated Cillian?” Old man Lee asked.
In the minutes that followed Cillian told them how he had discovered that there were traitors at the academy. He heard a conversation between Abraham and someone on the phone talking about taking the mystic key at the academy.
“Abraham again.” Old man Lee shook his head.
Cillian shrugged. “I did not know what to make of it and I did not want to make baseless assumptions.” He looked at Rufus as his mind traveled back to old memories. “With you away on a mission, the first person I told was Morrel. He told me to keep the news to myself because if it got out, it would be disastrous. He said we had to root out the enemies quietly.”
“So how the hell did you end up going for the very mission I told you was too dangerous to go on?” Old man Lee quizzed. “The island of no return!!! I know you have guts Cillian but that was a suicide mission.”
Cillian exhaled loudly. “I never would have gone to that island, but Morrel told me that there was another mystic key there and demons knew about it. He stressed the urgency and said we had to get it before the demons did.
As an experienced guardian I believed that I could do the job, what I did not know was that Azur had set a trap for us, the moment out feet stepped on that island, demons and other supernatural creatures ambushed us. They knew that we would be there…. come to think of it what if Azur took the pure girl there?” His quizzical gaze fell on Rufus.
Moving his head from side to side, Rufus folded his lips for a fleeting second. “She is not there. We have been busy this week, I did not just cleanse the academy, I cleansed the island as well. The main reason as to why most people never made it back alive from the island was because it was a demon’s nest. Sort of like their main operating center, guarded by foolish humans that were worshiping the demons.
As it turns out, for years, the traitors at the school alerted the demons each time a team of hunters was going there. With no more traitors to alert them, a team of guardians and the soldiers chosen by the president raided the place and cleansed it, Azur is not there. The news reported the story, but they called the demon nest a terror cell. All the humans that were helping the demons are locked up tight in the special prisons were terrorists are kept. We had to add runes and magic wards to the prisons just in case.” He unpacked the details.
“The president is walking around with his chest puffed out. Taking out a terror cell and rescuing some survivors has boosted his numbers.” Jennie shared.
Rufus wished he had a reason to puff his chest as well. “Too bad Azur was not there. I want to end him and the war he is trying to start as quickly as possible.”
“There is some good news, Ramiel the angel said that he would be on the lookout for Azur. I do not think that the demon will be stupid enough to reveal his hide out or himself with angel. I do not know what he’s endgame is here, but the fact is that he cannot do the sacrifice with just the girl, he needs the relics which we have.” Edward shrugged, offering an easy smile. The same way that the demons had given up the mystic keys was the same way they would give up on this plan.
“Anything from that sly Gecko uncle Rufus?” Maureen asked.
Releasing a short sigh, Rufus shook his head “He claims that he knew nothing of what his great master was planning. They were supposed to meet in the Satin mountains where he was to hand over the relics to him. Unfortunately for Azur, we arrived before the handover could happen.” His fingers drummed on the table, too lightly that they made no disturbing noise.
Snapping his fingers like a brilliant idea had come to him, Andre’s face lit up. “How about we meet Azur in place of Gecko, we set a trap and stake out and wait, then when Azur appears we curb him.” He smacked the table. “Boom, game over.” He let out a victorious loud laugh.
“Andre, from which of your parents did you inherit this gene of stupidity?” Maureen recoiled at his absurdity.
“Gecko’s temple was razed, leaving only smoldering ruins. Who do you think was responsible?” She paused and exhaled when he did not answer. “Azur! Is that not obvious?”
“I see that now, but I am not dumb aunt, there is nothing wrong with sharing ideas.” Andre head moved on slow nods.
“This means that we have to just have to prepare for the worst.” Cillian leaned forward. “The training at the academy should be as ruthless as it has been because the enemy is in hiding and now, he is pissed off.” He added.
“I made a promise to chief Cunningham before he moved on that I would protect his granddaughter. I will do all it takes to keep that promise.” Rufus mentioned.
David let out a quiet sneer. “How can you make such a promise? Anything could happen…..”
“Promises are made to be broken.” Maureen stated without remorse, earning herself judgmental gazes.
Phoebe stood up, she wanted to check on things at the cafe, the renovations had been completed, and all her equipment had been shifted into the new space. She had not had time to check on things just yet with all the running around and demon hunting.
“I am off to the cafe, I just do not understand why my employees are still sitting here. I am going to deduct your bonuses.” She spoke in a joking way.
Grandma Mayfair raised her index finger. “Boss, I am taking some days off, you can understand why.” She leaned her head on Cillian’s shoulder.
“Approved.” Phoebe banged her fist on the table as if she was stamping an approval form. The table groaned and collapsed.
