Chapter 635: Tower 6.
“I think there was no option but to build using stone because this city is so close to the sea and seagulls are always shitting on their homes. And let’s not forget the pelicans, those big birds sure live to bring the residents gifts of frequent and sizable droppings. It is easier to wash bird poop from stone than paint a house again.” Maureen suddenly changed the subject from the Rice family to the town itself.

She could hear the cries of the seagulls and other birds. It made Maureen think about the beaches, the city was famous for its beaches and the beach birds.

The taxi driver smiled once again, “Ah, you have found our darkest secret. The pigeons too contribute to this problem. But we have efficient cleaning teams which keep our environment sparkling.”

As they stepped out of the taxi, they couldn’t help but get slack jawed. The glass monolith stole their breaths. The company’s headquarters was a massive building made out of splendid black glass with a glow. It looked like a big black diamond and a modern airport. It was designed to slant as if the building was falling and yet it was very steady. It was a true testament of the Rice family’s architectural abilities plus their wealth and power.

Rekha had to take pictures outside the building; she had always wanted to do this. Reluctantly, Phoebe and Maureen were pulled into the picture taking venture. They also bought bread from a coffee vendor outside the building and fed the pigeons like other tourists were doing.

After that, they stepped inside and made their way to the reception area. A razor-efficient receptionist whisked them straight to the CEO’S office before they could blink. They had not even needed to state what their business was.

“They are good.” Maureen whispered to Phoebe as the door of CEO’s office was pushed open.

His secretary announced their arrival. Mahone, a blonde-haired man launched from his throne like seat, crossing the room in three strides to intercept them.

“Good morning, Miss Mayfair….” Mahone began but was cut off by Maureen.

“It is Mrs. Saxon now. The rest of us are Miss Mayfair’s.” She corrected him.

Mahone’s brows rose up. The man wondered when Phoebe Mayfair had become Phoebe Saxon. He knew that she was dating David, but he had not heard anything about a Saxon wedding. Nevertheless, he decided to mind his business.

“Oh! Pardon me…Mrs. Saxon.” He offered an apology; he was very polite.

“Call me Phoebe.” She said, taking the next few minutes to introduce Maureen and Rekha.

He offered them sits in the chairs on the open area, taking one himself and then he ordered his secretary to bring them drinks. As Phoebe was obviously pregnant, he asked that they bring her fresh juice and a big fresh strawberry muffin.

“It is from my private kitchen, so it is very fresh.” He shared with Phoebe.

He got a call and excused himself. The ladies used that time to study his office and move their energy around, searching for anything supernatural. There was nothing evil, and no surprise, he had a wealth gathering artifact in his office.

It was a jade orchid ornament crafted from obsidian and opal. On the bottom, surrounding it were delicate gold engravings that formed a swirling pattern.

The secretary returned with the refreshments just as Mahone Rice was returning to the chair opposite the women that had opted to sit together.

“How can we be of help to you?” Phoebe asked, sipping on the lemonade which was made to her perfection. Mahone had really looked into her it seemed. It was the only possible explanation for how he knew about how many spoons of sugar she liked and the fact that she loved all things strawberry.

The man adjusted with unease and waited until his secretary left the room. Then he leaned forward and said in a half whisper, “Honestly, I do not really believe in all of this stuff, but my wife does she is a customer of your cafe. She does not directly come to Citrus city, but she orders your snacks and drinks and pendants, tonic, talismans and whatever online. She told me that you are a legit shaman and insisted that I call you.” He looked around as if he was worried that someone would overhear their conversation.

Satisfied that they were still alone, he leaned forward again and continued, “I am having a little trouble, there have been rumors about one of our condominium towers being haunted….I mean personally I believe that it’s our enemies spreading such false rumors such that no one enters the damn building. It is our finest work, comparable to the Saxon tower. It will be occupied by the one percent of the one percent. Someone is sabotaging me.” He clenched his fists.

“What are these rumors?” Phoebe asked.

Mahone pulled out his phone and ordered someone to come to his office. “Janice is the property manager for Condominium tower 6, I believe that she can explain better than I can.” His fingers tapped nervously on the chair armrest.

Rekha squeezed her lips tightly then, she relaxed them. “What is making you so anxious Mr. Rice? If you want us to really help you then you should be truthful.”

“The investment of course!” He belted out loudly. “If such rumors continue then people will not be buying apartments which means that we cannot make money. When we don’t make money, we have to fire employees, get loans, sell shares, sell off properties, declare bankruptcy, that kind of thing. My position is dependent on making profits and growing the company. You are all from the one percent of the one percent so you should understand what I mean.” He wiped cold sweat.

They wanted to shake their heads. Leadership in founding families was different from that of other wealthy families.

There was a knock on the door, then a young beautiful woman with maroon hair woman walked in. She smiled and greeted the guests.

“Janice tell them what is happening in tower six and go straight to the problems.” Mahone instructed.

She folded her arms on her lower stomach and faced the women as if she was going to make a presentation. “Tower six condos were all sold out before construction was even finished but the problem now is that all buyers keep moving out and demanding refunds. The longest they seem to stay is one month.

They have all claimed that they heard strange noises during the night, apparently the elevators operate themselves, faucets turn on at full blast without being touched around 3:00am. Lights flicker in the hallways, whispers come from the walls.” She paused for break and asked if she should continue.

“Yes, go on.” Phoebe gave her a single nod.

“I have also noticed personally that the temperatures just drop suddenly, it is hot one moment and cold the next. There has been talk of women singing in empty bathrooms and one client said that she woke up one day and found herself levitating above her bed.” Janice let out a weary sigh.

Mahone smacked the table. “I have told you a thousand times that Mrs. Jenkins is a drunk, she must have been hallucinating! Why do you think she checked himself into a rehab center the very next day?” His glare would have scorched Janice if she was paper.

“Probably because she was horrified by what happened.” Janice answered fearlessly. “Sir, you should know that the previous clients have formed group and are planning to sue us because the company refused to return the money, they used to buy the condos. Also, the other managers of the fifth and seventh towers have noted a decline in sales. Probably because of these rumors.” She told him.
